40's-50's Frank Dishta Zuni Sterling Silver Turquoise Buckle Ranger Set. Important early impeccably hand made sterling and turquoise flush inlay belt buckle, tip and keeper set by the famous Zuni master silversmith Frank Dishta. He was active from 1925 to 1954. Frank Dishta is notable for having invented the coveted turquoise flush inlay technique seen here.This exact ranger set is shown in Dr Gregory Schaaf's "American Indian Jewelry A-L". It is also in the Kennedy Museum's collection of Zuni Jewelry, but attributed to Frank's son, Virgil Dishta Sr. Virgil began to learn the art from his father Frank in the 1930's, and began signing his pieces in the 50's. This piece is unsigned. Since Dr Schaaf and his wife own a collection of Frank's jewelry and since Schaaf has written several highly respected books on Native American jewelry, I lean toward Dr Schaaf's giving the correct attribution to Frank Dishta. In either case, it is a marvelous, early and beautiful example of the Dishta technique.
The buckle is almost 1 3/4 inches wide east to west by about 1 1/2 inches north to south, as you look at it in the 2nd picture. The tip is about 1 1/8 inches by about 3/4 inches. Keepers are 7/8 inches by 3/8 inches.
