He was raised there by his parents Stella and Ghee Thomas along with<br>his seven brothers and sisters. As a young boy he watched his mother, Stella,<br>weave tradition rugs which she sold to provide for the family. By the age of<br>six, he was sent to boarding school where he finished the 8th grade. Later he<br>traveled to Oklahoma to complete high school. During this time he spent nine<br>months away and summers at home on the reservation. Preferring life on the<br>reservation, he set off as a young man in 1972 for Holbrook, Arizona determined<br>to learn silversmithing so he could work from home. He began this journey by<br>first learning to work with silver by cutting out piece work from sheets of<br>silver. Through observation and the use of traditional hand made tools, it<br>wasn’t long before Lester picked up the craft and perfected it. If you ask<br>Lester he will humbly tell you he is still learning. To this day Lester still<br>makes jewelry for Indian traders off the reservation and enjoys the independence<br>of working out of his home while spending time with his wife Sally, six children<br>and seven grandchildren. Antique August Buermann Engraved longhorn spurs Star steel silver. Both with Star Steel silver mark, non magnetic.Buermann Spurs are one of the most famous and sought after designs from one of the most famous makers in Cowboy Spur history. He can be considered to be a good businessman too, as he fulfilled the need of creating many different types of spurs and also aggressively patenting his brands/logos and designs.  What ever type or style was needed, Buermann was the first to step up and create them.History.August Buermann was born in Germany in 1842 but later traveled to the US after taking his apprenticeship in lock smithing. After joining the army as a substitute at the age of 22 he began making spurs for the civilian and military. Buermann fashioned the now infamous StarBrand that adorn his designs and creations.  The company had grown to have over 100 employees before the turn of the century. By the early 1900s, the majority of military men were wearing Augusts heel spurs and army officers were also entitled to wear heel chains and were all privately purchased from Buermann. August also had a son, August Jr, who succeeded him in running the company when he retired in 1896.  August Jr was also a good businessman like his father but, in 1914 the Buermann name and design was purchased by North and Judd, a large established hardware company. The infamous StarBrand of the Buermann boot spur was no more and was replaced by the North and Judd anchor mark. August Jr then retired. The Buermann name is not without some (slight) controversy too though.  Once the other well known manufacturers started to gain in-roads on the established business, selling new styles of spurs that were popular, Buermann was accused of making straight copies of these designs.  Even to the point where he was accused of taking copies of the images from other companies catalogs for his own use. At that time, the company was seen to be becoming more and more removed from it's customer, branching out and modernizing at a fast rate.  Other companies such as McChesney or Crockett were closer to their customers and Buermann was playing catch-up.Materials.Like many other spur makers, the majority of these spurs are made from solid brass or iron.  However, Buermann also invented 2 types of metal for use too, known as "Star Steel Silver" and "Hercules Bronze". Where these metals were used, the metal name was also stamped onto each piece. In fact, so good were the products that were being made in his modern factory in Jelliff Avenue, that he was able to win some awards of excellence.  The Centenial Commission of Philadelphia bestowed several awards for different products in several categories and the Star Brand also won awards at the St Louis Fair in 1904.

c1800 Hand Forged colonial betty lamp. Great lamp from the 18th to first half of 19th century, functional with no damage. 10.5" tall with hook extended, 4.75" x 4 1/8" wide. Nice no brainer patina. This early betty lamp burned grease for lighting in the 19th century. It is called a 'betty lamp' which comes from the word 'besser' in German (meaning better). Far superior to the rushlight or splint lamp, it evolved from the crusie lamp with the addition of a cover and a wick support which ensured that any oil/grease drippings from the wick flowed back into the reservoir. The betty lamp was probably the most widely used means of lighting among people of middle or lower income until refined whale oil became common. It burned any fat or oil that was available virtually without smell or smoke, using a twisted cotton wick. B70

c1750's Battersea snuff box. 3 5/8" wide x 1.6" tall. Some overall crazing and very minor overpainting at bottom rim inside and out. This and a few more Battersea pieces I'm listing have tags indicating they were last purchased at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet in the 1970's.Having already opened an office in New York, in 1964 Sotheby’s bought Parke-Bernet, America’s largest fine art auction house.Battersea boxes developed in the mid 18th century as tiny decorative containers covered with enamel or porcelain and decorated with pleasing designs. Originally the boxes were made of copper covered with white enamel, decorated with classical or religious scenes or portraits. They evolved over time to become more sentimental. The Battersea box got its name from a firm under the tutelage of Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen, Once Lord Mayor of London at York House in Battersea. The boxes were decorated by transfer printing, which took an impression from an engraved plate painted with enamel and printed on to the box which was then hand painted and fired. The firm existed only from 1753 to 1756 however other firms producing similar boxes, especially those in the village of Bilston, took up this technique. Battersea became the collective name for all such boxes. With advancements in the pottery industry due to the Industrial Revolution, Battersea boxes gradually fell from favour. Allowing small boxes to be produced at less cost than the enameled competitors made Battersea boxes decline significantly by the mid 19th century. They became popular again in the second half of the 20th century with the development of commemorative boxes produced for such well known firms as Tiffany & Co.
