c1750's Battersea snuff box. 2.75" wide x 1 3/8" tall. Some overall crazing, no restorations. This and a few more Battersea pieces I'm listing have tags indicating they were last purchased at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet in the 1970's.Having already opened an office in New York, in 1964 Sotheby’s bought Parke-Bernet, America’s largest fine art auction house.Battersea boxes developed in the mid 18th century as tiny decorative containers covered with enamel or porcelain and decorated with pleasing designs. Originally the boxes were made of copper covered with white enamel, decorated with classical or scenes or portraits. They evolved over time to become more sentimental. The Battersea box got its name from a firm under the tutelage of Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen, Once Lord Mayor of London at York House in Battersea. The boxes were decorated by transfer printing, which took an impression from an engraved plate painted with enamel and printed on to the box which was then hand painted and fired. The firm existed only from 1753 to 1756 however other firms producing similar boxes, especially those in the village of Bilston, took up this technique. Battersea became the collective name for all such boxes. With advancements in the pottery industry due to the Industrial Revolution, Battersea boxes gradually fell from favour. Allowing small boxes to be produced at less cost than the enameled competitors made Battersea boxes decline significantly by the mid 19th century. They became popular again in the second half of the 20th century with the development of commemorative boxes produced for such well known firms as Tiffany & Co.

It's an amazing piece 3" tall x 4" wide with articulated earrings that spin around when in motion, all three pieces moving on their own. It's 50 grams even, can easily be worn as a pendant/brooch, or even hung on the wall. Very substantial thick gauge sterling silver, a rare and important design. Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. By the time she left her native country for good, she had survived the death of her father in 1903, the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906, the loss of her mother at the hands of a er in 1931 and the end of her first marriage in 1936. Fortunately, a Mexican vacation changed the life of Margot Van Voorhies in ways she could never have imagined. In 1937, forty-one-year-old divorcée Margot Van Voorhies left San Francisco on a trip to Mexico City. Fate threw her into the path of Don Antonio Castillo, who took her to Taxco, a Mexican hotbed for the design, crafting, and production of silver objects, in particular jewelry and housewares. Soon, Castillo would become Margot’s second husband. At the time, Castillo was working for William Spratling, a pioneer in Mexican silversmithing. He brought Margot into the business as a designer, helping her to transform her paper creations into three-dimensional forms in silver. In 1939, the pair, along with other members of Castillo’s family, opened shop as Los Castillo Taller [Taller is Spanish for “Workshop”], with Margot as the top designer. After ten years, the marriage between Castillo and Van Voorhies dissolved, as did their professional association. Margot went on to open her own shop in 1948, taking the name Margot de Taxco, by which she is best known today. Seven years later, enamel was added to many of her pieces, and this is where Margot found her legacy. At the peak of her career, Margot, who designed each piece herself, had two dozen silversmiths and a dozen enamellists in her employ to execute her vision. The men performed the duties as silversmiths; the women did the enamel work, using tiny brushes to bring the watercolor drawings to life. To ensure the accurate rendering of her jewelry designs, she compiled a book of instructions and drawings, detailing the construction and finishing of each. Margot attracted talented craftsmen who later went on to cement their own reputations, such as Sigi Pineda, Miguel Melendez, and Melecio Rodriguez. Many contemporary Hollywood celebrities were clients of Margot, including John Wayne and Lana Turner, who visited her shop every year. Tragedy struck in the form of a fire in 1960. Forced to move her studio, she never again regained her prior success, and the business folded in 1974. Margot granted several of the silversmiths in her employ permission to use her molds to create pieces on their own, in return for debt forgiveness. As a result, many of Margot’s pieces were re-created by silversmiths such as Jaimie Quiroz and Geronimo Fuentes, bearing their hallmark rather than hers. Margot passed away in 1985. But her talent as a designer and her influence as an artist have continued to gain recognition since the time of her death. Margot’s shop produced some repousse silver (a technique where a raised or relief design is hammered in from the reverse side of the piece). But she is best known for her champlevé enamel work. Champlevé is created by carving, etching, striking, or casting troughs or cells into the surface of a piece and filling it with vitreous enamel. In Margot’s jewelry, the designs were die-struck, a process that was detailed and critical to the final product. Margot produced many suites that included necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and earrings, as well as convertible jewelry. Margot de Taxco jewelry is recognized for its elegance, femininity, and variety. There were many areas of influence that can be found in Margot’s work. Her fish and wave motifs celebrated her love of Japanese art. The ornate swirls and floral motifs were reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style. Mischievous pre-Columbian figures were a recurring theme. Art Deco style ballerinas struck graceful poses. Margot was also taken with Egyptian motifs and Mexican crafts. Margot de Taxco pieces are distinguished by the stamp that includes her name, Eagle 16 (or Eagle 1, for her earlier works), along with a production number. Issued by the government, the eagle stamp was a way to identify th

Votive offerings have been part of the human relationship with s and belief from pre-history to the present. Today we might light a candle, a stick of incense, lay a bunch of flowers or in some Catholic churches people still leave a wax body part by way of an offering, but in the ancient world the practice was more wide-ranging, literal and multifaceted. The ancient Greeks and Romans offered them to a deity to bring good fortune or to grant favours and they were an important expression of their personal relationship with their s and desses. And when it came to matters of health and personal wellbeing, they were often anatomical.

c1880's Penny Farthing Bicycle Humidor or Biscuit jar lid. This is the real<br>deal, extremely rare and desirable. It came to me on a turn of the century clear<br>pressed glass jar shown in the last pic. I'll throw in the jar unless you<br>request otherwise. That Jar has a 3.75" outer diameter for the lip, the lid is a<br>little loose but does catch where it should. So maybe it's the right lid/base.<br>This is an important lid and it should be on an important jar, jar is old with<br>no damage, but not important by any means. Seems like the lis could have went<br>inside a jar as it has a lip. If so it would goi inside about a 4 1/8" opening<br>on the jar, I think 4.25" would be too big. [1] It was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, with its large<br>front wheel providing high speeds (owing to its travelling a large distance for<br>every rotation of the legs) and comfort (the large wheel provides greater shock<br>absorption).<br><br>It became obsolete in the late 1880s with the development of modern bicycles,<br>which provided similar speed amplification via chain-driven gear trains and<br>comfort through pneumatic tires, and were marketed in comparison to<br>penny-farthings as "safety bicycles" because of the reduced danger of falling<br>and the reduced height to fall from.<br><br>The name came from the British penny and farthing coins, the penny being much<br>larger than the farthing, so that the side view of the bicycle resembles a<br>larger penny (the front wheel) leading a smaller farthing (the rear wheel).<br>Although the name "penny-farthing" is now the most common, it was probably not<br>used until the machines were nearly outdated; the first recorded print reference<br>is from 1891 in Bicycling News. For most of their reign, they were simply known<br>as "bicycles", and were the first machines to be so called (though they were not<br>the first two-wheeled, pedaled vehicles). In the late 1890s, the name "ordinary"<br>began to be used, to distinguish them from the emerging safety bicycles; this<br>term and "hi-wheel" (and variants) are preferred by many modern enthusiasts.<br><br>Following the popularity of the boneshaker, Eugène Meyer, a Frenchman, invented<br>the high-wheeler bicycle design in 1869 and fashioned the wire-spoke tension<br>wheel. Around 1870 English inventor James Starley, described as the father of<br>the bicycle industry, and others, began producing bicycles based on the French<br>boneshaker but with front wheels of increasing size, because larger front<br>wheels, up to 5 feet (152 cm) in diameter, enabled higher speeds on bicycles<br>limited to direct-drive. In 1878, Albert Pope began manufacturing the Columbia<br>bicycle outside Boston, starting their two-decade heyday in America.<br><br>Although the trend was short-lived, the penny-farthing became a symbol of the<br>late Victorian era. Its popularity also coincided with the birth of cycling as a<br>sport.<br><br>History<br>Main article: History of the bicycle § 1870s: the high-wheel bicycle<br>Origins and development<br><br>Book cover of The Modern Bicycle, published in London in 1877<br>Eugène Meyer of Paris is now regarded as the father of the high bicycle[9] by<br>the International Cycling History Conference in place of James Starley. Meyer<br>patented a wire-spoke tension wheel with individually adjustable spokes in<br>1869.[3] They were called "spider" wheels in Britain when introduced there.<br>Meyer produced a classic high bicycle design during the 1880s.<br><br>James Starley in Coventry added the tangent spokes[3] and the mounting step to<br>his famous bicycle named "Ariel". He is regarded as the father of the British<br>cycling industry. Ball bearings, solid rubber tires and hollow-section steel<br>frames became standard, reducing weight and making the ride much smoother.<br><br>Penny-farthing bicycles are dangerous because of the risk of headers (taking a<br>fall over the handlebars head-first). Makers developed "moustache" handlebars,<br>allowing the rider's knees to clear them, "Whatton" handlebars that wrapped<br>around behind the legs,[14] and ultimately (though too late, after development<br>of the safety bicycle), the American "Eagle" and "Star" bicycles, whose large<br>and small wheels were reversed. This prevented headers but left the danger of<br>being thrown backwards when riding uphill. Other attempts included moving the<br>seat rearward and driving the wheel by levers or treadles, as in the<br>"Xtraordinary" and "Facile", or gears, by chain as in the "Kangaroo" or at the<br>hub, as in the "Crypto";[15] another option was to move the seat well back, as<br>in the "Rational".<br><br>Even so, bicycling remained the province of the urban well-to-do, and mainly<br>men, until the 1890s, and was a salient example of conspicuous consumption.<br><br>Attributes<br><br>Man standing next to a penny farthing in Fife, Scotland, 1880<br>The penny-farthing used a larger wheel than the velocipede, thus giving higher<br>speeds on all but the steepest hills. In addition, the large wheel gave a<br>smoother ride, important before the invention of pneumatic tires.<br><br>Although the high riding position seems daunting to some, mounting can be<br>learned on a lower velocipede. Once the technique is mastered, a high wheeler<br>can be mounted and dismounted easily on flat ground and some hills.[citation<br>needed]<br><br>An attribute of the penny-farthing is that the rider sits high and nearly over<br>the front axle. When the wheel strikes rocks and ruts, or under hard braking,<br>the rider can be pitched forward off the bicycle head-first. Headers were<br>relatively common and a significant, sometimes fatal, hazard. Riders coasting<br>down hills often took their feet off the pedals and put them over the tops of<br>the handlebars, so they would be pitched off feet-first instead of head-first.<br><br>Penny-farthing bicycles often used similar materials and construction as earlier<br>velocipedes: cast iron frames, solid rubber tires, and plain bearings for<br>pedals, steering, and wheels. They were often quite durable and required little<br>service. For example, when cyclist Thomas Stevens rode around the world in the<br>1880s, he reported only one significant mechanical problem in over 20,000<br>kilometres (12,000 mi), caused when the local military confiscated his bicycle<br>and damaged the front wheel.<br><br>End of an era<br>The well-known dangers of the penny-farthing[24] were, for the time of its<br>prominence, outweighed by its strengths. While it was a difficult, dangerous<br>machine, it was simpler, lighter, and faster than the safer velocipedes of the<br>time. Two new developments changed this situation, and led to the rise of the<br>safety bicycle. The first was the chain drive, originally used on tricycles,<br>allowing a gear ratio to be chosen independent of the wheel size. The second was<br>the pneumatic bicycle tire, allowing smaller wheels to provide a smooth ride.<br><br><br>An 1880 penny-farthing (left), and the first modern bicycle, J. K. Starley's<br>1885 Rover safety bicycle (right)<br>The nephew of one of the men responsible for popularity of the penny-farthing<br>was largely responsible for its demise. James Starley had built the Ariel<br>(spirit of the air) high-wheeler in 1870; but this was a time of innovation, and<br>when chain drives were upgraded so that each link had a small roller, higher and<br>higher speeds became possible without the need for a large front wheel.<br><br>In 1885, Starley's nephew John Kemp Starley took these new developments to<br>launch the modern bicycle, the Rover safety bicycle, so-called because the<br>rider, seated much lower and farther behind the front wheel contact point, was<br>less prone to a header.<br><br>In 1888, when John Dunlop re-invented the pneumatic tire for his son's tricycle,<br>the high wheel was made obsolete. The comfortable ride once found only on tall<br>wheels could now be enjoyed on smaller chain-driven bicycles. By 1893,<br>high-wheelers were no longer being produced. Use lingered into the 1920s in<br>track cycling until racing safety bicycles were adequately designed.

    1 en stock

Amazing Napier Sterling Mid Century Modern period and style bracelet. An amazing work of wearable art from the 40's or 50's. This piece rivals and of the high end silver from the period in both quality and design, the only difference is it's much rarer than say a Pineda, Spratling, or Jensen bracelet of the period as they were produced in larger quantities from my experience. This is entirely handmade, each piece is hand hammered on the sides, screams quality from every direction. 8" long x 1" wide x 59.3 grams, fully functional springed clasp, no damage or significant wear. The Napier Company got its start in North Attleboro, Massachusetts 1878, under the name of The E. A. Bliss Co., manufacturing gilt men's watch chains. In 1882, the company became incorporated as The E. A. Bliss Company with the word "The" as part of its legal name. The company relocated to Meriden, Connecticut in 1890, after the company sustained rapid growth in the previous decade. During World War I (and again in World War II), they ceased production of jewelry, and instead focused on producing war-related items, such as medallions and medals. James H. Napier became president of the company in 1920, and the company was renamed, The Napier-Bliss Co. In 1922, the company again changed its name to The Napier Co.Timeline The company was known for its ability to be on the forefront of fashion and design and had a history of sending its designers to Europe. In 1925, James Napier attended the World's Fair Exposition Internationale des Artes Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, and brought back with him business ideas, including designs influenced by Parisian and European fashion. Mr. Napier himself, did not design jewelry. James Napier work for the company from 1914 to his death in 1960. From 1920 to 1960 he served as president. In 1999, the company was bought by Victoria & Company. The plant in Meriden, Connecticut was closed by Victoria & Company on October 15, 1999. However, under the umbrella of Jones Apparel Group, Napier jewelry is still being manufactured and distributed.Jewelry designs In the 1920s and 1930s, Napier designed necklaces, bracelets and earrings in a range of styles including, designs featuring Egyptian motifs, such as cobras, Victorian Revival designs and Deco-style motifs. The company produced very little jewelry during the 1930s, focusing on its giftware lines. In the 1940s, most of the jewelry produced was sterling silver tailored pieces. In the 1950s, it produced jewelry in a wide range of styles. Napier jewelry is notable for its simple, modern, geometric and floral designs. However, the company also produce boutique and high-end jewelry. Some of the metalwork bears resemblance to Mexican and Scandinavian designs. The fan jewelry collection was introduced as a 10-year fundraising commitment in 1955. In the 1950s, the Napier Company presented First Lady Mamie Eisenhower with a bracelet bearing an elephant design, which was reputedly one of her favorite pieces of jewelry, and which she wore often, and the Napier Company gifted the contestants of the 1955 Miss America Pageant with fashion jewelry.Historical silver designs Napier silver designs from the first half of the 20th century are in museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum and a substantial collection at the Dallas Museum of Art. Over the years, Napier silver has been featured in museum exhibitions, including Modernism in American Silver: 20th Century Design at the Smithsonian in Washington, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN (2005–07). Napier designs have also been included in two shows at the Brooklyn Museum, entitled 19th century Modern (2011–12; 2013–15). In November 2016-November 2017, the iconic Napier penguin cocktail shaker is the lead design of a Dallas Museum of Art exhibition Shaken, stirred, styled: The art of the cocktail.

Bowls are 5" wide x 2.5" tall, Saucers are 6" wide. Selling the 8 pcs shown with<br>no damage or significant wear.<br><br><br><br>Steuben Glass is an American art glass manufacturer, founded in the summer of<br>1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York, which is<br>in Steuben County, from which the company name was derived. Hawkes was the owner<br>of the largest cut glass firm then operating in Corning. Carder was an<br>Englishman (born September 18, 1863) who had many years' experience designing<br>glass for Stevens & Williams in England. Hawkes purchased the glass blanks for<br>his cutting shop from many sources and eventually wanted to start a factory to<br>make the blanks himself. Hawkes convinced Carder to come to Corning and manage<br>such a factory. Carder, who had been passed over for promotion at Stevens and<br>Williams, consented to do so. In 1918, Steuben was acquired by Corning Glass<br>Works and became the Steuben Division. In July 2008, Steuben was sold by Corning<br>Incorporated for an undisclosed price to Schottenstein Stores,[2] which also<br>owns 51% of Retail Ventures, a holding company for DSW, Filene's Basement, and<br>formerly Value City Department Stores; Value City Furniture, which changed its<br>name to American Signature Furniture; 15% of American Eagle Outfitters, retail<br>liquidator SB Capital Group, some 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing<br>its shoes, furniture and crystal. On September 15, 2011, Schottenstein announced<br>it was shutting down Steuben's Corning factory and Manhattan store, ending the<br>company's 108-year history. Soon after, Corning Incorporated repurchased the<br>Steuben brand. In early 2014, The Corning Museum of Glass announced that it<br>would work with independent contractors to reproduce Steuben using a new,<br>lead-free formula and their classic leaded crystal. Carder period<br>(1903-1932)[edit] Steuben Glass Works started operation in October 1903. Carder<br>produced blanks for Hawkes and also began producing cut glass himself. Carder's<br>great love was colored glass and had been instrumental in the reintroduction of<br>colored glass while at Stevens and Williams. When Steuben's success at producing<br>blanks for Hawkes became assured, Carder began to experiment with colored glass<br>and continued experiments that were started in England. He soon perfected Gold<br>Aurene which was similar to iridescent art glass that was being produced<br>by Tiffany and others. Gold Aurene was followed by a wide range of colored art<br>glass that eventually was produced in more than 7,000 shapes and 140 colors.<br>These are a pair of handblown Steuben gold Aurene glass candlesticks designed by<br>Frederick Carder for the Steuben Glass Works, ca. 1913. (From a private<br>collection in Manhattan, New York.)Steuben Glass Works continued to produce<br>glass of all sorts until World War I. At that time war time restrictions made it<br>impossible for Steuben to acquire the materials needed to continue manufacture.<br>The company was subsequently sold to Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben<br>Division. Carder continued as Division manager without any real change in the<br>company's operation except that he now had reporting responsibilities to Corning<br>Glass Works' management. Corning's management tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to<br>limit the articles that Steuben made to only the most popular. Production<br>continued until about 1932. In 1932, there was a major change in Steuben<br>management. The nationwide depression had limited the sale of Steuben and there<br>was a lessening of public interest in colored glass. In February 1932, John<br>MacKay was appointed to Carder's position. Carder became Art Director for<br>Corning Glass Works. Steuben then produced primarily colorless art glass.<br>Steuben still produced colored art glass, but mostly to fill special orders. A<br>few new colors were added after Carder transitioned into his new role with<br>Corning Glass Works, but the last known sale for colored art glass by Steuben<br>was in 1943. Houghton period (1933–2012) An example of Steuben Glass design<br>during the Houghton era is the Balustrade Candlestick set, which mimics a<br>classical balustrade. Of special note is the hallmark of the perfectly formed<br>tear drop air bubble suspended in the design.Corning Glass Works<br>appointed Arthur A. Houghton Jr. as President in 1933, and under his leadership<br>Steuben changed artistic direction toward more modern forms. Using a newly<br>formulated clear glass developed by Corning (referred to as 10M) which had a<br>very high refraction index, Steuben designers developed beautiful, fluid<br>designs. Pieces such as Gazelle Bowl, designed by Sidney Waugh incorporated Art<br>Deco and modernist themes into glass. The themes during this period included<br>"balustrade" designs for water goblets and candlesticks, footed bowls and<br>serving pieces. Decorative forms included wildlife pieces representing owls,<br>penguins and other birds in smooth stylistic forms. Some pieces, such as the<br>Ram's Head Candy Dish, playfully included clean lines crowned by an ornate<br>design (a ram's head, complete with a ruff) on the lid as an homage to its<br>classic earlier pieces. The company also entered into the field of larger show<br>and presentation pieces celebrating various scenes (such as its cut-away design<br>featuring an Eskimo ice fisherman above the ice, and the fish below, or the<br>Cathedral Window design) and elements that incorporated etchings. In some cases<br>sterling silver or gold plating were used on metal finish elements such as the<br>golden "fly" atop the nose of a rainbow trout. Each piece is signed simply with<br>"Steuben" on the underside of the object. Toward the 1990s, the company also<br>began production of small objects—"hand coolers"—in various animal shapes. Items<br>from this period were also noted for their careful and elegant packaging. Before<br>boxing, each Steuben piece was placed in a silver-gray flannel bag (stitched<br>with the Steuben name), and then placed in a presentation box.<br><br><br><br>tw274

Selling one with two available by changing qty, both in same condition with no damage or significant wear. 3" wide x 1.75" tall x 72 grams. No dents, bends, or other issues. Selling one with two available by changing qty.Charles Tiffany was born February 15, 1812 in Killingly, Connecticut. About 25 years later, in 1837, Charles Tiffany and John Young, and later in 1841, they added J.L.. Ellis as a partner, began Tiffany, Young and Ellis in Lower Manhattan. That company at the time was founded at first to sell fancy goods and stationery. Tiffany bought his parents shares of the company in 1853 and changed the focus of the company to sell upscale jewelry and merchandise. Once Tiffany bought his parent’s shares, the company was renamed to Tiffany & Co. In 1867, Tiffany & Co. was the first United States based company to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1868, the company became incorporated, had four stores and was on the right path to continue to grow to the company that it is today.A Humble Start When Young and Tiffany began their business, they originally started off with offering items such as stationery and merchandise before moving on to offering jewelry and silverware. The business continued to grow and manufacture jewelry, and later opened a location in Paris. His stores adopted the standards of European jewelry and therefore, sterling became established in the United States and the American jewelry market.Tiffany was determined to obtain one-of-a-kind jewelry. It was that desire which helped fuel how much his products were sought out, specifically among the upper classes of New York. The jewelry created by the company became partially well known because of the wealthy people who desired its products. In the 1830’s, Tiffany made it’s mark in the jewelry world at the time because they clearly marked the prices on their goods. This eliminated the chance that customers would haggle and try to negotiate the prices of the goods that they were purchasing at the time. Additionally, Tiffany’s was unique at the time because they only accepted cash payments and didn’t allow their goods to be purchased on credit. With the Civil War threatening jewelry purchasing at the time, Tiffany adjusted the focus of his company and ended up manufacturing swords, medals, light armor and many other items that were needed for war. In 1877, Tiffany & Co. had become such an established name that it easily influenced the industry and was able to make outlandish purchases. This when the now called “Tiffany diamond” (a yellow South African diamond) was purchased for $18,000 at 287 carats. The diamond was cut down to 128.54 carats over nearly a year and was eventually put on display in the Smithsonian. Today, Tiffany & Co. is an American worldwide luxury jeweler and specialty retailer, headquartered in New York City.Understanding the Markings While Tiffany & Co. is famous for the “Tiffany diamond” they are even more famous for their use of sterling silver. When looking at actually sterling silver that is made by Tiffany’s there are several markings that can help you figure out the origin and if a piece is indeed made by Tiffany’s or fake. At the start, there were several silversmiths who supplied silver flatware and holloware to Tiffany’s. Each of those silversmiths marked the pieces with their own marks in addition to marking them with Tiffany’s marks. Some of the makes of Tiffany’s sterling silver include William Gale, Gale & Hughes, Wood & Hughes, John Polhemus, Henry Hebbard, William Bogert, Grosjean & Woodward, Moore & Hebbard and John C. Moore. In 1868, Moore silversmithing firm was absorbed into Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany’s then began the production of its own silver. It was at that time that the silver was to be marked with the initial of the Artistic Director or the initial of the President of the firm but that was continued until the mid-1960’s. Each design on the silver that Tiffany’s creates represents the long and proud heritage that comes with the company’s history.

c1890 Mt Washington Burmese Thomas Hood poem vase with rigaree. Absolutely perfect with no damage or restorations whatsoever, amazing one of a kind piece that belongs in a museum. 4" tall x 4 1/8" wide. MT. WASHINGTON AND PAIRPOINT GLASS Mt. Washington and its successor, the Pairpoint Corporation, was one of America’s longest-running luxury glass companies (1837-1957), one that rivaled its better known contemporaries, Tiffany and Steuben. It constantly reinvented and re-invigorated its business through creativity in texture, decoration, pattern, and color - developing a variety of styles and decorating techniques which were so technically complex that few are even practiced today. The Mt. Washington Glass Company was founded in South Boston in 1837, and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1870. In 1880, Thomas J. Pairpoint, an English silversmith, was hired to run the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, another company in New Bedford which Mt. Washington’s owners established to produce ornate silver-plated mounts for Mt. Washington glass. In 1894, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company absorbed Mt. Washington, and the company was renamed the Pairpoint Corporation in 1900, which remained the company’s name until it went out of business in 1938. It was revived briefly as the Gundersen-Pairpoint Glass Company but closed permanently in 1957. The company’s most successful years were from 1880 (in the height of the opulent Gilded Age) to 1930 (the end of the exuberant Roaring Twenties). MT. WASHINGTON ART GLASS AND CUT GLASS Englishman Frederick Shirley was hired in 1872 to run Mt. Washington’s chandelier department, and two years later was put in charge of the entire company. Shirley was entrepreneurial and litigious, quick to adopt new designs and quick to complain if he thought any other firm was copying his wares. By the time he resigned in 1891, he had amassed a total of 27 patents and five design patents for various types of glass, most of which were quite successful. In 1885, Shirley introduced Burmese glass, a translucent glass that shaded from yellow to pink, which was highly decorated in the elegant and sophisticated style characteristic of the day. It became an immediate success on the Art Glass market. Shirley was a good businessman and took advantage of the dawning age of advertising to promote Burmese glass extensively. Mt. Washington’s large decorating shop specialized in enameling. The decorators who worked on Burmese glass also applied their skills to a variety of other decorated glasses with exotic names like Royal Flemish, Crown Milano, Colonial, and Pearl Satin Ware. By 1890, the company was advertising itself as “Headquarters in America for Art Glass Wares.” isshelf

1993 David Lotton Leaf and Vine Art glass vase 7.75" tall with no cracks, chips, restorations, or wear. Signed David Lotton 1993 Leaf and Vine. The inside of this vase is iridescent. DAVID LOTTON David Lotton is a second generation American glassblower. He is the oldest son of Charles Lotton and was introduced to the world of glassblowing at a very young age. In 1970, Charles started building a furnace and began blowing pieces of glass from melted down pop bottles in a shed behind their house. David was there in this infancy and he was Charles first assistant at the age of ten. David has vivid memories of his childhood working in the shop with his father. When most children were playing childhood games he was spending time after school and on the weekends helping him at the bench. By the age of 14 he started learning how to do finishing work, polishing the bottom of the glass flat. David eventually followed in his fathers' footsteps and by the age of 15 began making paperweights. That ignited a passion to begin glass blowing. David has been creating his one of a kind vessels since 1978. His unique handcrafted works are designed with precise attention to detail. Developing his own glass formulas, David has created a complex palette of colors, giving him the ability to create his multi-layering and sculpting style. Each year David continues to study and refine the techniques he uses in creating his art. David's Clematis Reflection Series, Hollyhock Paperweight Series and Mixed Bouquets Series all reflect his floral patterns which capture his love for detail. He combines color and layering to create depth and beauty. His Organic Sculptures reflect movement and rich hues of a summer sunset. David is inspired by all nature. He has a successful ranch in the hills of Kentucky where he is inspired to evolve, change, and grow continually. He commutes back and forth to fulfill both loves. tw274
