She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. sz7.75 Lee and Mary Weebothee Zuni Mediterranean coral inlay ring, no issues.Lee and Mary Weebothee are master Zuni silversmiths and inlay artists from the Zuni Pueblo. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940’s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years.Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies” that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry”. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lee’s mother, Lula. She is known for her master stone cutting skills which are very unusual because of the rounded edges on the stones. They both then set the stones. They are very well know for their interesting cluster work but they also did other types of work using beautiful high quality stones. sz8 Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Cheyenne, b. 1933) Sterling and turquoise ring<br><br>Ben Nighthorse Campbell was born to a poor family in Auburn, California in 1933.<br>He grew up to be a Northern Cheyenne chief, Korean War veteran, judo wrestler,<br>U.S. Olympian, jewelry designer and the first Native American serving in the<br>U.S. Senate.<br><br>Campbell dropped out of high school and joined the air force, serving in the<br>Korean War. While serving in the military he received his GED high school<br>diploma. He studied the martial arts and became a judo wrestler. He captained<br>the judo team in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. After returning to the States he<br>graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in physical education<br>and fine arts. He also attended Meiji University in Tokyo and received more than<br>200 awards for his jewelry designs.<br><br>Campbell began his political career in 1982 becoming a state legislator in the<br>state of Colorado. In 1987 he moved to the U.S. House of Representatives and<br>then in 1992 became a senator from Colorado. He was reelected in 1998.<br><br>Senator Campbell serves as a member of the Appropriations Committee, Energy and<br>Natural Resources Committee, Veteran’s Affairs Committee and the Indian Affairs<br>Committee. He also chairs the Helsinki Commission. He was the first Native<br>American ever to chair the Indian Affairs Committee. He has worked to pass<br>legislation settling Native American water rights and protecting Colorado’s<br>wilderness areas. Ernest Begay Navajo Oversized turquoise cluster ring. Biggest and best ring ever<br>with top quality natural Nevada turquoise. Typically a huge ring is in the 30<br>gram range, this is 110.5 grams size 8, contemporary ring by a well known and<br>respected artisan with no damage or detectable wear. 3" x 4" face.<br><br>Navajo artist Ernest R. Begay Sr. was born and raised in Kayenta - Chilchinbeto,<br>AZ. In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High<br>School. “We used copper in the class, but that’s where I got my start. I took<br>the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch<br>my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap<br>silver to work with,” recalls Ernest.<br><br>Ernest’s career in jewelry making didn’t really take off until he entered some<br>rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup<br>Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which<br>helped him begin his career as jewelry artist.<br><br>Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise<br>cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Ernest<br>gets much inspiration from traditional and old jewelry styles. “Concho belts,<br>squash blossoms, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and belt buckles, I do<br>them all in my own signature old style series. This old style jewelry always<br>caught my eye. I used to go to the Trading Posts just to look at some of the old<br>pawn on display.
