Otto,<br>who had visited his grandfather to visit the 1940 World's Fair, realized that he<br>did not want to pursue the life of a farmer so, in 1941, he went to New York to<br>discover his future. He answered just one employment ad and showed up for the<br>interview. Frank (Francisco) Rebajes explained that he was looking for someone<br>to take his studio art pieces and increase production capability. He said to<br>Otto "See what you can do" and handed Otto one of his favorite pieces, the<br>"Ubangi Face". At the end of the day Frank was amazed. Otto had created some<br>jigs and a process to mass produce Franks art. Otto made in just one day, one<br>hundred perfect Ubangi Face sculptured pins. Frank knew then that his dream to<br>provide wearable art to the masses would now be realized.<br><br>Frank Rebajes was considered the first master in the art of copper jewelry and<br>crafts and Otto was the Foreman that insured the designs were artfully and<br>masterfully produced. More importantly Frank and Otto enjoyed a friendship that<br>would last a lifetime.<br><br>Rebajes Wearable Art was one of the top Jewelry producers in the 1940s and 50s<br>with hundreds of top stores accross the nation carrying the line. Otto, now with<br>decades of silversmithing skills left the company and started his own business<br>"Orb Originals" in 1958 with much success. Frank sold the Rebajes name and<br>business to Otto in 1960 and moved to Spain where he returned to small studio<br>work and his scientific research of the "Mobius".<br><br>With Otto's business growing, he had added the workshop, machinery, and catalog<br>designs from Rebajes. Ramos was responsible for the collective potteries’ well-known scenes of Mexican life, local culture and dancers. He left in 1934 to take up dancing full-time and studied Spanish, Mexican and Gypsy dance in Mexico. Along the way, he met and married another dancer, Carla Montel. The pair became a popular dance team in the 1940s, appearing in nightclubs and movies. Flamenco dance themes are common in MAC pottery. In the late 1930s, Harris copyrighted Ramos’s designs, and continued to use them for many years after his departure, in all three incarnations of her pottery workshops.Her workshops gained additional exposure through participation at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. By 1934, Harris’s success led to expansion with San Jose Pottery, started up as a production facility for the smaller MAC workshop, which couldn’t support the kilns needed for tile manufacture. San Jose Pottery also manufactured a line of dinner-, art and tileware known as “Pan American Ware.” These pieces featured Colonial, Western, Indian and Mexican scenes.Harris left San Jose Pottery in 1937 following a disagreement with the president and partial owner of the company, Cecil Beck. As part of the split, she retained rights to all of the designs produced by the company. The Calla Lily dinnerware line that San Jose Pottery is known for was produced after Harris left the company. Beck sold the company to a New York firm in 1941. The pottery burnt to the ground in 1944. Unable to resume operations, the company went out of business and the building was razed in 1947.Concurrently with her work at San Jose Pottery, the workshop began producing tile murals and wrought iron tile tables for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. MAC/San Jose Potteries also produced wares for the 1939 New York World's Fair.Harris continued her work with MAC. In 1939, Harris joined the Arts and Crafts Division of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) as a technical supervisor. During this period, she brought 60 WPA artisans into the workshop. Items produced during that period include tilework for public spaces, dinnerware for needy families and other public works. She left the WPA in 1941 to manage the San Jose Mission State park, and moved into living quarters in the mission. The third iteration of her workshop, Mission Crafts, was launched in 1941. This larger workshop featured both more space and a bigger kiln. They collaborated with local iron artisans and produced tilework in wrought-iron frames and tables. Harris eventually retired in 1963, when her son took over the business. Mission Crafts closed in 1977 due to increased production costs.

Fits up to a 6 3/8" wrist, tapers from 20mm to 30mm wide. One of a kind bracelet, extremely rare example in gold. Preston Monongye did not work in a lot of gold, very few pieces have come to market ever, when they do they are crazy expensive. I personally had this machine tested on a $30,000+ XRF machine and it ranges from 40-43% gold (Averaging about 10k) which actually makes perfect sense. Since P Monongye didn't work with a lot of gold, the times he did were likely somewhat experimental. In this case it is somewhat obvious that he melted up some scrap gold, likely some that was brought to him by a customer or friend to make this which was likely a custom piece. The lowest gold content shot we took showed it at 48.13% copper, 40.08% gold, 8.18% silver, 3.49% zinc, and .12% Nickel.Preston Monongye (1927-1987) was an influential proponent of what he called “the new Indian art.” He wrote, “We may use old techniques, along with old designs taken from potsherds or pictographs, but then we redesign them or add innovations of our own.”Preston had an unconventional and late blossoming path to jewelry making. He served in two wars, worked in law enforcement, and was an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was later in life that he decided to dedicate himself full time to jewelry making, which was received numerous awards. He had always experimented with jewelry and craftsmanship, but did not receive acclaim until fully committing to his art. Preston primarily did the metalwork and design for his pieces, letting his friend and acclaimed lapidary artist Lee Yazzie do the inlay, and later allowing his son Jesse Monongye to do his lapidary work. His pieces are exhibited nationwide.Born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican and Mission Indian parents, Monongye was adopted by a Hopi family at age seven. He was raised Hopi, speaking the Hopi language and participating in the Katsina Society. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. “He taught me how to live the ‘Hopi way,'” Monongye recalled. Throughout his career, Hopi colors and images were prominent in Monongye’s work.But Monongye was adamant that Native jewelry not be bound by the past, explaining, “An old piece of philosophy given to me by my father and other men of the Hopi Mesas is, ‘If you can progress without hurting your tradition or your , you should do so.”Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi and social life. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.
