Sz7.5 Dina Huntinghorse Native American silver and high grade turquoise ring
Sz7.5 Dina Huntinghorse Native American silver and high grade turquoise ringWichita jewelry designer Dina Huntinghorse incorporates a blend of traditional and contemporary jewelry techniques to create masterful works of wearable art. Although gold and silver work is rarely seen among the tribes of the Great Plains, Dina's life experiences introduced her to the craft, and inspired her to develop her own unique style.Raised in southwestern Oklahoma, Dina's first love was of horses, and she learned to reproduce their likeness in pencil sketches and paintings. She was later taught the traditional art of beadwork by an aunt, and became known for her beaded deerskin purses. In 1989, her interest in jewelry was piqued when her late husband, Navajo jeweler Herbert Taylor, taught her to cut beads and do inlay work. Dina began making jewelry on her own in 1996. Her work is featured in galleries throughout the southwest, and she is a regular participant at the Heard Museum Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market.Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. sz7.5 Leo Yazzie Black Jade and coral channel inlay sterling ring
sz7.5 Leo Yazzie Black Jade and coral channel inlay sterling ring. Overall good condition with minor wear.LEO YAZZIE Leo Yazzie has been designing and creating fine jewelry for more than 30 years. Born and raised at Black Mesa on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, the influence of the land and his culture is a part of each piece of his contemporary and sophisticated jewelry.Leo uses both gold and silver to create jewelry with a unique combination of traditional and contemporary designs. “The inspiration for many of my designs came from watching my grandmother, mother and other women in the family weaving rugs. They told me their designs came from Spider. Now, I make designs inspired by the patterns they wove.”Leo’s patterns vary, from a delicate cutout border with intricate detail to bold geometrics. It might be a gold panel with a geometric motif overlaid on a silver pendant; a cut-out stepped pattern encircling a stone; or a lightning shaped band on a ring. Whatever the pattern, the effect is sophisticated and elegant. The classic use of turquoise and coral is a favorite combination of Leo’s. The coral may range from pale pink to a very deep red. Leo uses turquoise of the highest quality, sometimes rare pieces from famous mines that have been closed for years. “I love working with quality stones,” says Leo. To guarantee he’d always have the best materials to work with, Leo has collected high quality stones from gem shows and traders over the years. In addition to turquoise and coral, Leo uses other semi-precious stones from around the world like sugilite, lapis, gaspeite, white opals and more. Sugilite has gained in popularity since its introduction in the 1980s. Found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, this stone with its deep rich purple to soft lavender color works beautifully with turquoise, or on its own. Leo enjoys pairing it with the fire in white opals.Leo’s settings are all handmade, often built up layer-by-layer. Designs are sawed out and appliquéd. Rich multi-colored side inlay will often be added to highlight a larger stone or add accent colors to the design. He uses channel inlay on some pieces, with the stones precisely cut flush with each other, so that they almost appear to be one stone. Some pieces will have a sculptural inlay, where each stone is cut and shaped, then fitted together.Leo’s avant-garde work is fitting for today’s contemporary fashions. His attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in each piece and reflects his willingness to take the time to let a design emerge.“I enjoy what I do and I like to take my time with each piece,” says Leo. He usually works on several pieces at a time, working with one and then setting it aside to work on another, or taking one of his long walks. “I usually work for three hours each morning and then leave the pieces alone,” says Leo. His long walks are important; they reconnect him with the land and life surrounding him.The care and time that Leo takes fabricating each of his pieces has resulted in his winning enough awards and ribbons to fill two large boxes. Today, Leo has stopped entering contests. “I wanted to make room for the younger artists,” says Leo. He may have stopped competing, but he has not stopped creating. This quiet man and gifted artist continues to innovate and dazzle us with his eye for color and attention to detail.

sz7.5 Steve Wikviya LaRance Hopi Tufa cast ring
sz7.5 Steve Wikviya LaRance Hopi Tufa cast ring. No issues.Master Hopi silversmith Steve Wikviya LaRance was born 1958 in Phoenix, Arizona but spent part of his childhood with his grandparents in the Hopi village of Moencopi. At Hopi he learned the traditional Hopi arts and those ceremonial designs are a part of his distinctive tufa cast jewelry today. Steve says "When we create art, we share a piece of ourselves with the world."Steve’s distinctive, tufa-cast jewelry uses traditional Native symbols, like petroglyphs, dragonflies, kachina figures and water signs, in creative contemporary ways. His designs are inspired by historical cast jewelry and other old techniques. After becoming a painter, then a sculptor, he now does jewelry that is beautifully designed and impeccably executed. He gathers the semi-hard volcanic tufa from the Hopi Reservation. "I was able to find the site where Charles Loloma used to get his tufa," he says, happily. It is finer-grained than that found elsewhere. Constantly seeking the best is a signature concept of Steve LaRance and his jewelry.

sz7.5 Thomas Curtis (1942-2013) Navajo silver feather ring
sz7.5 Thomas Curtis (1942-2013) Navajo silver feather ring, adjustable. Thomas Curtis was an award winning, self-taught Navajo Silversmith; a master who pursued his art for over 50 years. He is best known and loved for his painstakingly beautiful handcrafted precision stamp work in heavy-gauge silver creating sophistically stimulating jewelry. Born in 1942 into a family of skilled silversmiths, Thomas Curtis observed the secrets of his familys finely crafted silver work and began creating traditional Navajo jewelry by the age of 12. Before committing himself completely to the art of metalsmithing, Curtis was a champion horseback rider and won many awards as a member of the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performing bareback, bull riding and saddle bronc. The rodeo is where he was given his acclaimed surname, ‘Curtis. Born as Thomas Redhorse, his family name was the source of many jokes while working in the rodeo and was given the name ‘Curtis by a stock contractor who wished him to be recognized for his riding talent and not overshadowed by a name. After somersaulting backwards off of a horse and injuring himself in 1969, Thomas left the rodeo to pursue his craft as a silversmith full time. Thomas Curtis grew up observing his uncle who was a blacksmith and had a business repairing wagons. “It was like todays car garage, he had wagons lined up. I would help him, I was fascinated by all of the tools and I had an interest in working with metal. Curtis elaborated on his fascinations with blacksmithing while working in the rodeo, and continued them into his jewelry making career by hand making the hardened steel die stamps that identified him as one of the premier Navajo silversmiths of his time. Thomas Curtis believed an artist should be a part of every process in the creation of their work, and he took monumental pride in the art of making his own die stamps for his harmonious arrangements. Curtis was often quoted finding inspiration for his pieces by, “looking at the ground, the sky, the plants, and the four seasons. He also turned to sacred traditions, sourcing his patterns and descriptive style from traditional weavings, historic and contemporary construction from the 1890s-1940s, and adapted classic ketoh designs for the lids of the elaborate silver boxes he is known for. Thomas Curtis had an extreme talent for delicately balancing compositions of traditional design motifs with his intense skill, generating dramatic results with refined charisma. With only an 8th grade education he excelled as an artist and craftsman who, like his precision stampwork, deeply embedded a profound mark in the history of jewelry making, raising the standard for quality work and inspiring others to push themselves to greater heights. Thomas Curtis passed away June 29, 2013 and left behind a collection of finely crafted Navajo jewelry and a remarkably gifted daughter, Jennifer Curtis, who carries his legacy as a master silversmith creating exceptional work inspired by her fathers unyielding hard work and lifelong dedication to his art. .
