• c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust

c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust

    1 in stock

c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust
in Mission Oak Frame. I bought this piece a few years ago from a woman that told
me she purchased it from some sort of liquidation sale Michigan State
University. I'm still looking for the piece of paper where I had her write it
down but It might not turn up for years. I did find that Morill hall was
demolished in 2013 which was about 4 years before I bought this piece. I know
for a fact it was MSU and I know it was Morill Hall I just don't remember the
date she acquired it, not sure if I asked. It seems Morill hall was a women's
building in 1900. This piece is for sure that old. I would bet my life it's from
1900-1910. It's unsigned, I don't know who the artist or the woman is. I think
there's a good chance they're both someone famous. To me this looks to be a one
of a kind handmade piece and I don't think there could've been may artists at
that time or now capable of such a feat. It has minor wear as shown. It is very
heavy. It measures 16" wide x 20" tall. This piece represents quite a bit not
just for people interested in Michigan stuff but It's an important part of
Women's Educational History and the evolution of this country.

In December 2012, History said goodbye to Morrill Hall and moved to the Old
Horticulture Building.

Opened in 1900, Morrill Hall was first named the Women’s Building. Though women
were admitted to MSU in small numbers beginning in 1870, a women’s course was
not introduced until 1896. As the number of women rose, the university need a
dormitory—the Women’s Building. The Dean of women had a residence on the first
floor and home economics instructors lived on the upper floors. There was space
for 120 women students and a dining room, cooking and sewing laboratories, a
woodshop, music rooms, and a gym. According to a catalog from the day, women
residents were subject “to only such restraints as would be expected in a well
regulated Christian family.” By 1926, modifications allowed for the housing of
200 women in the building.

In the mid-1930s, increased enrollment in the Women’s course made necessary the
construction of new dormitories. As women students moved into new buildings,
Morrill Hall was converted in 1937 into classrooms and offices for the Liberal
Arts Division. That year the building was officially named Morrill Hall in honor
of Vermont Senator Justin Smith Morrill. He had been instrumental in forging the
federal Morrill Act, which established land-grant colleges. The act was critical
in the development of higher education in the United States.

As part of the Liberal Arts Division, History, along with six other departments,
established itself in Morrill in 1937. As the department grew, it came to occupy
all of the third and fourth floors and parts of the first floor and garden
level. English occupied the second floor and Religious Studies part of the
first.

About 100 years after its construction, Morrill’s age began to show. Inspections
revealed deterioration in the building’s wooden infrastructure and shallow
foundation. In 2010, the MSU Board of Regents decided that repairs were not
feasible and approved a plan for demolition.

Events then unfolded quickly. In summer 2012, English and Religious Studies were
moved from Morrill to Wells Hall. Romance

Old photo of Old Horticulture Building
Old Horticulture Building

Languages, which had been in Old Horticulture, was also moved to Wells. Crews
then did minor renovations on Old Hort. History was the last department to
vacate Morrill during a move which took several weeks.

Morrill Hall was demolished in summer 2013. In spring 2014, the Morrill plot was
transformed into a green space with benches and gardens arranged in manner so as
to emulate the long, wide halls that characterized the old structure.

Needless to say, the move to Old Hort was time consuming. Faculty packed their
own belongings, most of which consisted of books. Crate after crate was then
taken by university movers 100 yards across campus. Faculty then unpacked their
things and began the process of settling in.

Old Hort lacks some of the charm of Morrill. Gone are the high ceilings,
hardwood floors, large windows looking out at the green, and spacious offices.
But Old Hort has proven to have some advantages. The heating system works well,
there are no rats, bats or birds inside the building, and the offices, though
smaller, are comfortable and roomy enough for multiple bookcases.

MSU sponsored some updates of Old Hort. But there is still work to be done.
Alumni and friends of the department interested in sponsoring room updates and
in conference room, office and workspace naming rights are encouraged to contact
the department chair for conversations.

History has started a Morrill Fund to honor the old building and to advance
faculty research. For more information, please contact the department chair,
Walter Hawthorne.

*Some information for this piece was derived from History Professor Madison
Kuhn’s Michigan State The First One Hundred Years (East Lansing, Michigan State
University Press, 1955).

c1900 Moorcroft Style Tubelined Wall Plate Hand decorated with Squeezebag Plate

    1 in stock

c1900 Moorcroft Style Tubelined Wall Plate Hand decorated with Squeezebag Plate with Woman Chasing Husband with Broom. Really great, likely one of a kind. I believe the reason it's unmarked is there's a slight flaw in the glaze on the top right. In my opinion it's similar in quality to Moorcroft and if it were Moorcroft it would be few thousand dollar piece or more due to the age and great subject matter. Overall crazing, no cracks, chips, or rrestorations. 11.5" wide. I'm sure it's an antique 100+ years old and it's not restored, hand decorated, but that's all I'm really sure about. Could be French Majolica. TW198

The company's first designer was Isaac Broome, well recognized at the
time for his modeling of the human figure, face and profile. He was followed by
William Gallimore, a designer and modeler from England who also had a
well-established reputation. Over the years the company's success paralleled the
country's economy overall; the factory eventually closed in 1939. Today Trent
tiles are among the most collectible, especially among the lovers of Victorian
art tiles.

This was the second company to be founded by Straub - previously in 1850, from the nucleus of a small repair workshop, which he had set up to work on the construction of Geislingen's famous railway incline, he had founded the Maschinenfabrik Geislingen. This company was involved mainly in manufacturing mill turbines and traded throughout Europe. As early as 1862, the young company distinguished itself by winning a gold medal at the World Exhibition in London. In 1866, following the departure of the brothers Louis and Friedrich Schweizer, the company was renamed Straub & Sohn" (Straub & Son). The company showroom, built in 1868 in Berlin, gradually evolved to become the company's first retail outlet. Three years later, the company was already employing 60 workers. By 1880, the number of employees had grown to approximately 200 and the company was already producing 960 different items. 1880 saw the merger between Straub & Sohn and "Ritter & Co.", Esslingen, to form a public limited company under the name of Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik. At the time of the merger, Ritter & Co.'s Esslingen factory was already using the electroplating method of silver plating and had the more modern production facilities at its disposal. Straub's company, on the other hand, was the more profitable of the two.

12" wide x 3" deep, extremely thick and heavy sterling silver monogrammed in
center as shown, no significant bends or dents 861 grams.

Charles Tiffany was born February 15, 1812 in Killingly, Connecticut. About 25
years later, in 1837, Charles Tiffany and John Young, and later in 1841, they
added J.L.. Ellis as a partner, began Tiffany, Young and Ellis in Lower
Manhattan. That company at the time was founded at first to sell fancy goods and
stationery. Tiffany bought his parents shares of the company in 1853 and changed
the focus of the company to sell upscale jewelry and merchandise. Once Tiffany
bought his parent’s shares, the company was renamed to Tiffany & Co. In 1867,
Tiffany & Co. was the first United States based company to win an award for
excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1868, the
company became incorporated, had four stores and was on the right path to
continue to grow to the company that it is today.

A Humble Start
When Young and Tiffany began their business, they originally started off with
offering items such as stationery and merchandise before moving on to offering
jewelry and silverware. The business continued to grow and manufacture jewelry,
and later opened a location in Paris. His stores adopted the standards of
European jewelry and therefore, sterling became established in the United States
and the American jewelry market.

Tiffany was determined to obtain one-of-a-kind jewelry. It was that desire which
helped fuel how much his products were sought out, specifically among the upper
classes of New York. The jewelry created by the company became partially well
known because of the wealthy people who desired its products. In the 1830’s,
Tiffany made it’s mark in the jewelry world at the time because they clearly
marked the prices on their goods. This eliminated the chance that customers
would haggle and try to negotiate the prices of the goods that they were
purchasing at the time. Additionally, Tiffany’s was unique at the time because
they only accepted cash payments and didn’t allow their goods to be purchased on
credit.

With the Civil War threatening jewelry purchasing at the time, Tiffany adjusted
the focus of his company and ended up manufacturing swords, medals, light armor
and many other items that were needed for war. In 1877, Tiffany & Co. had become
such an established name that it easily influenced the industry and was able to
make outlandish purchases. This when the now called “Tiffany diamond” (a yellow
South African diamond) was purchased for $18,000 at 287 carats. The diamond was
cut down to 128.54 carats over nearly a year and was eventually put on display
in the Smithsonian. Today, Tiffany & Co. is an American worldwide luxury jeweler
and specialty retailer, headquartered in New York City.

Understanding the Markings
While Tiffany & Co. is famous for the “Tiffany diamond” they are even more
famous for their use of sterling silver. When looking at actually sterling
silver that is made by Tiffany’s there are several markings that can help you
figure out the origin and if a piece is indeed made by Tiffany’s or fake. At the
start, there were several silversmiths who supplied silver flatware and
holloware to Tiffany’s. Each of those silversmiths marked the pieces with their
own marks in addition to marking them with Tiffany’s marks. Some of the makes of
Tiffany’s sterling silver include William Gale, Gale & Hughes, Wood & Hughes,
John Polhemus, Henry Hebbard, William Bogert, Grosjean & Woodward, Moore &
Hebbard and John C. Moore.

In 1868, Moore silversmithing firm was absorbed into Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany’s
then began the production of its own silver. It was at that time that the silver
was to be marked with the initial of the Artistic Director or the initial of the
President of the firm but that was continued until the mid-1960’s. Each design
on the silver that Tiffany’s creates represents the long and proud heritage that
comes with the company’s history.
