c1970 39" Large Ray Lovato (b. 1946) Kewa Sterling high grade turquoise bolo tie. Solid sterling, weight and measurements in pics. Amazing bolo circa 1970. Lovato, Ray Ray Lovato - Did some silversmithing early in his career up until the 70‘s, now Ray Lovato is Americas premier artist creator of hand-ground turquoise beads called heishi. A native Kewa speaker, Ray is from Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico. Descended from a long line of jewelers, he learned the craft from his parents, Ike and Tonita Lovato, beginning his artistic career at age eleven. Born in 1946, Lovato served three tours in Vietnam, and upon returning to the U.S., he began making beads in the old style, using high-grade natural turquoise. At a time when others were creating their lapidary necklaces with machines, using cheaper stabilized or treated turquoise, Ray Lovato continued to work in the traditional manner, individually handcrafting every bead or disc in his necklaces. The creation of turquoise beads requires patience and great attention to detail. The tiny beads are drilled and smoothed against a turning stone wheel, which reduces the weight of the expensive turquoise by 60 to 70%. Few artisans still follow the Lovato familys commitment to traditional ways, a practice Ray learned from his parents and is passing along to his own children and grandchildren.

In 1996, he won a highly coveted first place ribbon in the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market for a concho belt as well as a Best of Category award for a squash blossom necklace. 46" H Harvey Navajo for Rocking Horse Ranch sterling bolo tie
46" H Harvey Navajo for Rocking Horse Ranch sterling bolo tie 46" long cord. Solid sterling, weight and measurements in pics. Rocking Horse Ranch was originally a ranch in Phoenix owned by the parents of Lani Mastrangel. After marrying Kevin Randall in 1968 and a stint for Kevin in the Vietnam war, Lani and he began producing high quality silver jewelry at the ranch. They began by hiring talented Navajo silversmiths, including Edison Smith, who was very interested in the early Navajo “master silversmiths. Thomas and Wilson Jim, Thomas Curtis, Fidel Bahe, and Curtis Pete also worked there and learned the craft of the “master silversmiths. Rocking Horse Ranch concentrated primarily on making concho belts and the artists there were instrumental in revitalizing the design and techniques of the early 1900s. Sadly, both Lani and Kevin have passed away. They helped some of the contemporary Navajo smiths become the finest smiths of the last 30 years. The story which has prevailed against all others and as far as is known, has never been challenged takes us to Wickenburg, Arizona in 1949. Here, Victor E. Cedarstaff, a resident, designed and made the first bola type of necktie. As Vic tells the story, he was out horseback riding one day and sudden gust of wind blew his hat off. Picking up his hat, he found that the band had become detached. Rather than try to replace it on the spot, he just slipped the band over his head and let it hang loose around his neck. After awhile his riding friend noticed it and remarked. “Nice tie youre wearing, Vic! This remark turned out to be more than casual; it sparked an idea. Being a silversmith, and having taught leatherwork, Vic went to work and designed something new and distinctive in this field. In a day or two, he had fashioned a tie from some leather lacing and trimmed the braid ends with silver balls. To this, he fastened a small silver slide adorned with a piece of turquoise. The tie attracted a good deal of skeptical attention from friends, however, orders soon began to arrive. Vics problem was that there seemed to be no good way of attaching the slide to the braid, one that would not slip or damage the braid. However, in due time, he succeeded toward this end by designing a triangular shaped slide, which he named a yoke. Unlike most conventional slides, which contain a variety of clips and locking devices to hold the tie in place, this yoke had none and it eliminated the necessity of having to slip the tie on over the head. He succeeded in creating something new and original and on this basis he was issued a patent. Searching for a suitable name for the tie, he settled on one that was truly western. He called it a “Piggin Necklet naming it from the piggin-string that the cowboys use for tying the legs of a calf. Sometime later, Vic was visiting with a friend in Wickenburg, who had been in Argentina, South America. The friend showed him a device, which he had brought back with him. He called it a “bola and explained that the Gauchos of that country used it for catching cattle. It bore a strange resemblance to the tie, which Vic had designed; in the way it was braided and had terminals similar to his tie. Vic decided to drop his original name for the tie, and call the tie “bola. The name change proved almost magical. Soon others began making similar ties and marketing them under various trade names. However, the name “bola seemed to be the one, which endured, and in the end it has become the universal name for the tie.

His silver work is distinct in its heavy guage and clean lines while his stones are often bevel cut, high polished and set in impressive raised settings. c1960 Lawrence Saufkie Hopi c-31 sterling bolo tie. Sterling slide and tips, Bennett clip is not sterling. 40" long, weight and measurements in pics. "Lawrence Saufkie (1935-2011), Hopi Pueblo, Bear Clan, was born at the Grand Canyon while his father, Paul Saufkie, worked there for the Fred Harvey Company. By the time Lawrence was thirteen, his father started teaching him the basics of silversmithing. Stamped copper buttons were some of his first products. Within the next year or two, Saufkie was selling jewelry of his own creation at Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial and, by age twenty, he would have his own booth. Once married in 1953, Saufkie turned to silverwork as a full-time occupation. He then joined the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild and started using his trademark of a bear shortly thereafter. He left the guild a few years later, stating, in 1975, that he preferred to work for himself with the ability to sell his jewelry where he chose. Saufkie started winning awards as early as 1958. He exhibited at his first Indian Market in 1962, and his reputation grew as he began winning top honors at southwest shows in the late 1960s and early 1970s. By 1975 he was having difficulty keeping up with the demand for his work." [Messier, 2014:126]

Harry Morgan Navajo Sterling high grade turquoise bolo tie
Harry Morgan Navajo Sterling high grade turquoise bolo tie 40" long with no issues. Weight and measurements in pics. Marked H Morgan. Numerous award winner Navajo artist Harry Morgan (1947-2008) was a 5th generation Navajo silversmith who‘ll always be remembered for his traditional "Vintage Revival-Old Pawn" style jewelry that had these gleaming sterling vintage looking darkened finishings that were made in a classic old style Navajo design..The beauty he gave the sterling was so warm that it brought out the metal‘s maximum luster..Harry once said "That‘s the way old style jewelry should look," he said.. "When silver is all shined up it hides all of the intricate detail in the stamp work and the bezels. This older style is what I grew up with and what I love." Although it was his mother who inspired him to create this style of jewelry that had that old Navajo look,it was Harry however who was the 1st to bring this style to the forefront of the industry..Paving the way for others like his brother-in-law Kirk Smith who then followed in Harry‘s footsteps & with Kirk‘s connection with other artists, they then followed in Kirk‘s footsteps. Now this is the dominant style amongst most Navajo artists & you see this old pawn style darkened finishing everywhere..Kirks name will always be associated with Harry‘s & vise versa. if you‘ve ever wondered why most Navajo pieces have that old style look & finishing where many of you can‘t tell if the piece is new or old anymore,it was this man who we can give the credit to for bringing a style of jewelry that we now see everywhere. He lived to see his jewelry being exhibited at the Heard Museum a year before his death. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics.
