• c1910 St Louis D'Argental French Scenic Cameo Glass Vase with Shepherd Scene 11.

c1910 St Louis D'Argental French Scenic Cameo Glass Vase with Shepherd Scene 11.

    1 in stock

c1910 D'Argental French Scenic Cameo Glass Vase with Shepherd Scene 11.75" x
5.5". Incredible complex labor intensive piece of over 100 year old hand
engraved art nouveau French cameo glass with no issues or damage whatsoever.St
Louis had been and still is one of the great old glass houses of France; they
had gone to the Paris exhibition in 1900 expecting to be crowned king of glass,
only to be completely out-classed by the cameo glass of the ‘upstart’ Emile
Galle. In the early 1920s they were still trying to get their own back. Paul
Nicolas cut a deal with St Louis –he would make cameo glass for them using their
facilities and then also he could use their facilities to make cameo glass for
himself too. This was before the days of ‘studio art glass’ if you had a glass
kiln you were a major sized business, not a one-man-band. The pieces Nicolas
made for St Louis were signed a number of ways, but quite soon they settled on
‘D’Argental’ (the brand name they had established for their own previous,
unsuccessful attempts at Cameo glass). Nicolas sneakily added a cross of
Lorraine to the mark to indicate when he personally made a piece. When he made
Cameo for himself pieces were signed ‘P. Nicolas’ usually followed by
‘Nancy’.Production at St Louis clearly had its limitations, the crystal glass
they used, had a more limited colour palate than he was used to at Galle and the
extra toughness of the crystal glass meant internal polishing was effectively
impossible. But using crystal did mean the cameo and wheel cutting could be much
finer.B61

I couldn't find a signature on this piece, but I guarantee it to be early 20th
century art glass, most likely French. Most likely Degue or Schneider. Large 1920's Muller Frères Cameo Glass Landscape vase. 12" tall x 5.25" wide
with no cracks, chips, or restorations. tw108

Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by cameo glass engraving or
etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce
designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored
background. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC,
where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo
style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and
agate. Glass allowed consistent and predictable colored layers, even for round
objects.

From the mid-19th century there was a revival of cameo glass, suited equally to
Neo-Grec taste and the French Art Nouveau practiced by Émile Gallé. Cameo glass
is still produced today.

Muller Frères (Co.) was an esteemed French glassmaking company based in
Luneville, France, famous for its Art Nouveau vases, lampshades, and
chandeliers, which often incorporate layered and colored glass. Their workshop
was established by Henri Muller and his brothers in 1895 after they trained with
Émile Gallé—who would retain a grudge against Muller for setting up a rival
enterprise. In 1910, the company began making lamps in association with Chapelle
and, at its height, employed around 300 workers. Production was stopped in 1933
and the factory closed three years later, a victim of the Great Depression.

c1900 Enormous French Daum Nancy Louis Majorelle Imprisoned glass
centerpiece/fish bowl. Basically any of this type of glass (Imprisoned, encased,
etc) you see is an imitation of this. The quality of this piece is next level,
thick hand forged iron encasing an amazing piece of art glass, well over 100
years old. I've seen smaller fish bowls, definitely lighter as this thing is
heavy. 14.7 pounds, 12.5" wide x 6" deep, it was too big to fit in one side of
my double sided sink.

Daum and Louis Majorelle was a prominent 19th century designing collaboration.
Majorelle was a French decorator and furniture designer who often worked with
Daum, a French studio known for their glass and crystal work made using the pâte
de verre method. Majorelle was highly regarded for his well-crafted woodwork,
made using veneers, in the Art Nouveau style. Similarly, Daum was known for
their attention to detail and elaborate Art Nouveau Designs. The French company
was founded in 1878 by Jean Daum. It was later inherited by Jean’s two sons
Antonin and Auguste at the turn of the 20th century, and the company began using
more sophisticated manufacturing techniques, including etching, carving, and
enameling, for which they later became famous. Born on September 26, 1859 in
Toul, France, Majorelle was raised in Nancy, later studying at the École des
Beaux-Arts in Paris. He would return to Nancy where he took over his father’s
furniture manufacturing firm. During this time, he began collaborating with the
Daum brothers on a series of lamps deigns, which were later exhibited at the
1900 Paris World’s Fair. Majorelle relocated to Paris at the outbreak of World
War I, but he nonetheless continued to collaborate with Daum on a number of
glass and furniture designs. Majorelle died in 1926 in Nancy, France. Daum
continues to produce crystal and glassware at their studio in Nancy.

The yellow looks like uranium glass to me but I
can't find any of my UV lights at the moment.

André Delattte himself was born in Châtenois, France, in 1887. He first founded
his glass producing company in 1921, close to Nancy. He fabricated engraved
glass objects of the kind which was also sold by Daum and Muller Frères.
Delatte’s cameo vases and bowls were much more interesting: the objects only
incorporated two to three layers of glass, with motives made visible through
acid and only little polishing was done afterwards. The designs were common to
be solid and clean. Although the motives themselves were not innovative and
mostly depicted landscapes and florals, they were attractive to the eye. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC, where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and agate.
