Cippy Crazy Horse Born Cipriano Quintana to renowned jewelers Terecita and Joe H. Quintana, Cippy CrazyHorse has carried on the classic traditional Pueblo design his parents started. To these classic designs, CrazyHorse brings his personal style. The bold, deep stamp and chisel designs on thick gauge silver are his trademark. Much of the thick gauge silver comes from melting scrap silver into ingots a process the “old timers incorporated. CrazyHorse says of his work, “There are traditional classic styles in silver jewelry, the Navajo and the Pueblo , and I do the latter; from cuff bracelets to concho belts, ranger set buckles and bead necklaces. Following high school, CrazyHorse attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales for two and a half years and then served in the US Navy until 1972. Upon returning home to Cochiti, CrazyHorse worked as an electricians assistant on the construction of Cochiti Dam, but an injury in 1974 curtailed that line of work. According to CrazyHorse, the injury “forced his hand at silversmithing. He started with the smaller tasks of making silver chains and gradually taught himself the old style of silversmithing. With much support and encouragement from his father and his wife, Susan, his silversmithing began earnestly. CrazyHorse has received much recognition for his work, having garnered his share of ribbons at the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts Indian Market in Santa Fe over the course of the past 35 years. He is considered a “Master Silversmith and his work is numerous collections and books on Native American jewelry. In the August, 2008 issue of The Santa Fean, Cippy was featured as one of “Seven Standouts of Indian Market. He has been featured in many other newspaper and magazine articles over the years, and in several museum and private exhibitions throughout the country. His work is highly sought after in Japan , where his classic designs are admired as well as his dedication to a traditional lifestyle at Cochiti Pueblo. Cippy and his work are featured in the “Artists Handmade section of the April 2011 issue of the Japanese (American Western Culture) magazine, “Free and Easy. Cippy has also been a Jewelry Judge at SWAIA Indian Market a number of times, where his unique sense of humor certainly enlivens the proceedings. In 1990, along with Yazzie Johnson, he curated the jewelry exhibit Steady Hands, White Metal at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe . He learned the technique of silver overlay from his grandfather, Preston Monongye and also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, NM. He was not only a talented jeweler, but also a Hopi Prophet, religious leader and author. He wrote "Cry of the Earth Statement" a Hopi prophecy message, which he delivered to the United Nations General Assembly and Re-submitted 11/23/93.

Collected about 45 or so years ago worn little if any. Virgil Thomas (1948-1986) Virgil Thomas became an active silversmith in 1972 and continued until his early death in 1986. His specialty was the traditional Hopi silver overlay technique promoted by the Hopi Arts & Crafts Co-op Guild which was formed in 1947, after World War II, when returning Hopi servicemen were trained at a silversmithing school founded under the G.I. bill. The late Paul Saufkie, Sr. was the technical instructor and the late Fred Kabotie, noted Hopi artist and designer, taught design. Although many techniques of silver work were used, the overlay style gradually emerged as the dominate style. This simple, unique, elegant jewelry is now considered essentially the Hopi style of jewelry. The Guild‘s purpose is to produce, purchase, promote, and sell handcrafts and jewelry. The Hopi Arts and Crafts Co-op Guild has its own building on Second Mesa, Arizona, next to the Hopi Cultural Center & Museum. Any craftsman, potter, basket maker, weaver or silversmith can have his or her work displayed and sold there. Half the building is devoted to work benches and supplies for the silversmiths. With only a 14-year career, Virgil Thomas could not have been overly productive so his jewelry is probably relatively rare. He was Corn Clan from the Third Msa village Oraibi. His hallmark signature is a V for Virgil and T for Thomas with the V placed over the T. He was included in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture 2002 exhibit "Jewel of the Southwest" and he is represented in that museum‘s collection.

I believe the previous owner paid $9500 for this bracelet about 25-30 years ago. High grade Godber is expensive. History of Godber-Burnham Turquoise The Godber mine, discovered in 1932, is located east of Austin, Nevada. First claimed under the name “Last Chance, it was later sold to Frank Burnham and then in 1934 to Walter Godber. It is said that during his short time owning the mine, he pulled out over "100,000" worth of turquoise, before selling it to Godber. Godber turquoise has been featured in the movie "The 10 Commandments" in the 50s, and was sold in Tiffany stores. The Godber mine was mined underground for the majority of its early years. Due to the miners chasing veins underground, you never know when you will run into an underground working where the turquoise has already been mined. The turquoise ranges from medium to dark blue, usually with a beautiful spider webbing. It has also been know for a very dark or black mottling forming, blotches and veins running through the stone. This mottling forms blotches and veins running through the stone that creates a impressive spiderweb appearance. Oscar Branson in his book, “Turquoise has called Godber ‘so hard and ‘some of the finest turquoise in Nevada‘. Godber has always been considered a very high quality turquoise and very collectible.

Specialized in large Zuni cluster work. Warren was considered a master silversmith along with his wife Doris. Recognizable techniques of silver repousse work often accompanied their designs along with the consistent use of high quality materials. Trader C. G. Wallace, retained many of the Ondelacy‘s pieces for his private collection. The Blue Gem Mine site is near Battle Mountain in Lander County, Nevada. Originally opened in 1934 as the Battle Mountain mine, the Blue Gem Mine has produced a huge variety of Turquoise, from dark greens to dark blues and everything in between. The Blue Gem Mine is known to be a particularly deep deposit of turquoise, with some mine shafts descending 800 feet below the surface. The turquoise found in the Blue Gem mine is some of the highest quality turquoise found in Nevada.
