Mitchell Sockyma Hopi overlay screw back earrings sterling. Solid sterling. Weight and measurements in pics. Mitchell Sockyma was born in Hopiland in 1942 and spent his childhood in the third Mesa village of Hotevilla. In 1973, he landed a job at the Hopi Crafts Shop, a workshop and studio new his home where his two older brothers were also silversmiths. Over the years, Mitchell has expanded his range of skills, including soldering 14k gold onto silver, which embellishes the traditional Hopi symbols he uses. As a member of the Corn Clan, his use of corn stalks is important, as is the Kokopelli, turtles, bear paws, and claws and wave designs. Unlike many other Hopi artists, he combines several of these design elements into one piece. He also incorporates brightly colored gemstones, natural turquoise, lapis and coral into the design. Considered one of the finest contemporary Hopi jewelers today, Mitchell has won numerous awards for his stunning pieces from the Northern Arizona Museum and Gallup, New Mexicos Annual Intertribal Ceremonial. He still resides with his family in Hopiland where he maintains a lifestyle in which art and beauty are intertwined with his Hopi religion and values in his everyday life. Lee and Mary Weebothee are master Zuni silversmiths and inlay artists from the Zuni Pueblo. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years. Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lees mother, Lula. She is known for her master stone cutting skills which are very unusual because of the rounded edges on the stones. They both then set the stones. They are very well know for their interesting cluster work but they also did other types of work using beautiful high quality stones. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

Alvin and Lula Begay Navajo silver and coral earrings. In 1956, Alvin and Lula Begay were both born into artistic families in Winslow, Arizona. They have worked as a silversmithing team since 1991, each serving their own role; Alvin works on the overall composition and construction of the piece, while Lula works on the setting/cutting of the stones as well as the polishing and final touches. The dynamic pair is known to not use any pre-made findings, everything outside of earring posts are handcrafted. Alvin is especially known for using his techniques of double and triple overlay, reversible necklaces, shadowboxes, and engraving--often all on the same piece!<br><br>While still very adept in the art of jewelry-making, Alvin’s first love is bareback riding in rodeos. He grew up in a traditional Navajo life style on the reservation and is a natural athlete and cowboy. He has competed for 10 years, winning championships in 1987 and 1989. Although Alvin is a very humble and unassuming individual, he is one on AIRCA’s top award winners. Felicita Eustace, Cochiti (1927-2016) Carved turquoise silver clip on earrings 1" tall x 7/8" wide, strong springs on clips, no issues, 8.6 grams. Felicita was a potter and silversmith.<br><br>Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.<br><br>The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.<br><br>Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”<br><br><br> Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Ring is size 8, everything is large and great. Tape measure and penny for scale.<br><br>Few silversmiths match the power and artistry of Art Tafoya. He specializes in silver. Hammered silver. Thick silver, hammered like leather, only deeper, brisk, clear and lovely.<br><br>Art Tafoya, silversmith and artist, learned the basics of silversmithing at the age to twelve from a blacksmith at a riding stable near his home. Later he learned the art of making handmade stamps and dies from Carlos White Eagle, a former student of the legendary Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai. Art has made an exhaustive study of Fred Peshlakai’s stamps and is an expert at identifying even unsigned work by this master. All of Art’s stamps and dies are his own creations. He specializes in hand stamped old-style jewelry reminiscent of Peshlakai’s, but definitely all of his own.<br><br>His original jewelry is highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007, 53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul. Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting relationships with each person who connected with his designs.

Henry Steig (1906-1973) Anting belakang sekrup bentuk bebas sterling modernis (3) sepasang. Pada tahun 1941, Alfred A. Knopf menerbitkan novel Henry Steig, Send Me Down.

Pada tahun 1941, Alfred A. Knopf menerbitkan novel Henry Steig, Send Me Down.

Lisa D'Agostino 18k/Sterling modernist earrings 10-11mm square, high quality<br>workmanship and design. No backs included, no other issues. 5.2 grams. For Lisa,<br>working with her hands has been the only thing that has ever really interested<br>her. Her curiosity about the potential for designing and creating with metal has<br>lasted since 1980. That year she participated in her first art fair. The shows<br>were local at first, but gradually developed into national venues that included<br>galleries as well. Except for an additional 12-year foray into baskets (see "The<br>Basketmaker's Art", Lark Publications) her focus has been on jewelry. The designs<br>have evolved over the years but the inspirations have remained the same. Lisa's<br>pieces are informed by geometry and architecture but tempered by the poetic and<br>philosophical aspects presented by astronomy. She ponders a phrase from an old<br>sixties song... "we are stardust - billion year old carbon."The work begins with<br>a loose drawing until a new solution or idea presents itself. It is a balance<br>between intention/chance and spontaneity/deliberation. The contours and forms<br>are simple at first. She likes the rigor and order of basic geometric shapes but<br>then organizing them into something more complex. Shapes are cut out of sterling<br>silver and formed or scored and soldered together. Other parts are distorted<br>through the rolling mill. Surfaces are textured with files or hammers or fused<br>with silver dust or 18K yellow gold. Many techniques may be incorporated into<br>one piece using a variety of hand tools, some of which are her oldest<br>buddies. The final steps involve patination of the piece, and then selectively<br>removing some of the patina to leave combinations of matte or polished surface<br>areas. Earthy rough stones and lustrous pearls are used to further enhance the<br>piece.Lisa was formally introduced to art at college. She earned a Bachelor of<br>Fine Arts degree at Bowling Green State University in 1977, but never really<br>learned to solder well until she was able to work in her own studio. She went<br>back to school, and after 3 years she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from<br>the University of Kansas in 1991. During this time she continued to show and<br>sell her work at many selected art fairs and galleries across the country. All<br>precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred<br>to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and<br>possibly higher content. Most cuff bracelets are shown photographed on a 6"<br>woman's wrist and will include a photo showing the inside circumference where<br>the metal tip meets the number on the tape measure.
