    1 in stock

1935 Ft Worth Texas Folk Art Order of the Eastern Star LFATA OES Campaign Miniature chair pin cushion. In many ways this is one of the coolest items I've ever had. It appears to be a hand carved campaign item from depression era Ft worth Texas. I believe Thelma Smith was campaigning for the Position of Electa in the Ft Worth chapter 820 of the Order of the Eastern star. Not sure if she won, if she did maybe this was a presentation item. Also interestingly 1936 was Texas centennial so that's cool also. Stable cracks in wood as shown. 6.75" tall x 3 1/8" wide. The Order of the Eastern Star (or Eastern Star, or OES), is the world’s largest fraternal organization that can be joined by both men and women. It is a member of the Masonic family, but joining does not make a member a mason. It’s more of an axillary group, that supports masonic lodges, masonic youth organizations, as well as their own agenda. Like all Masonic organizations, they support membership when in need, both financially and emotionally. They also provide a framework for introspective thought and philosophical discussion on ethical and spiritual topics.isshelf

Thomas L. Lewis (1907-1978) Taos New Mexico Landscape Oil on Panel. Nice old painting from the mid 20th century by a well listed artist. No issue or damage, clean frame, signed on back. Also a note on the back indicating at one point is was cleaned and varnished, looks fantastic now. 21" x 26" framed 17.5" x 22" panel. Born in Bay City, Texas, Thomas became a painter of detailed Southwest landscapes and an art gallery owner in Taos, New Mexico. He was a professional artist from the age of nineteen and began by painting scenes of the American South. In the early 1930s, he began experimenting with sepia-tones and desert painting and developed a sophisticated range of colors, which were particularly expressive of the desert country. After the War, he settled in Taos, New Mexico, and Bert Phillips, founder of the Taos Art Colony, became one of his best friends. His paintings are in the Gilcrease Institute of American History, the University of Arizona Art Museum, and many private collections.

Myrtle Lillian Stedman (1908-2007) 1931 Houston Texas Watercolor of Southern woman of color Feeding chickens. This is a really great watercolor from 1931 when she was living in Houston Texas and attending the Houston Museum of Fine Arts School. I personally find it extremely refreshing to find a picture from this era depicting a woman of color just "doing her thing" in a non derogatory fashion. 9.25" x 11.5" sight in a 15.5" x 18" frame. No issues with painting or frame. It's behind museum glass. It came with a note that I seem to have lost but it was just a pre-internet explanation of the importance of the artist with notes of when it was reframed behind museum glass. Myrle is more famous for her New Mexico landscapes, I personally find this one very interesting and refreshing.Myrtle Stedman was known as an “Artist in Adobe,” designing, building, and remodeling adobe homes under a contractor’s license. • Dallas Texas 1937 Pan American Games Olympic Gold Medal - Estate Fresh Austin

Dallas Texas 1937 Pan American Games Olympic Gold Medal

    1 in stock

Texas 1937 Pan American Games Olympic Gold Medal. This is an Authentic (tested) 14k gold medal from the Pan-American games that took place in 1937 in Dallas Texas. This was the first year of the games, it received little attention, it's likely the only one in existence as very few people in the world even know these games took place even though athletes that were famous at the time and also competed in the 1936 Olympics in Germany also competed here. It took me a fair amount of time to figure out what this was as I could find no sales results from another. 999/1000 gold buyers would melt this without ever figuring out what it was. Maybe there is another one out there but I could find no evidence of that, regardless it's a very important part of sports and Texas history. I'm assuming TKC is the recipient of the Medal, at the moment I'm not sure who that is. I've had this for quite some time and I know I acquired it in Austin, probably about 4-5 year ago which would have made the recipient 100 when he passed if he competed at 20 assuming I acquired it directly from the recipients estate. 84 years is a long time. I'm putting this out there hoping to gather a little more info on it and the price might seem crazy but I think it or more could be possible at the right auction. 7/8" wide x 1" tall without loop.Below is a little info I gathered online from various sources in a few hours about the 1937 Games and a few of it's participants.Early gamesThe idea of holding a Pan American Games was first raised at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where Latin American representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suggested that a competition among all the countries in the Americas should be created.[7] The first event called the Pan American Games took place in Dallas in 1937 as part of the Greater Texas & Pan-American Exposition, but it attracted so little attention it has never counted in the records of the competition.[8][9]At the first Pan American Sports Congress, held in Buenos Aires in 1940, the participants decided that the first games should be held in Buenos Aires in 1942. The plans had to be postponed because of World War II. A second Pan American Sports Congress held in London during the 1948 Summer Olympics reconfirmed Buenos Aires as the choice of host city for the inaugural games, which were held in 1951. The games began on February 25[10] of that year, and offered 18 sports.[7] Countries that were part of the Commonwealth of Nations such as Canada did not compete at the first Pan American Games.[11] The second games were held in Mexico City, Mexico. Competitions started on March 12 and included 2,583 athletes from 22 countries, competing in 17 sports.[12] The Pan American Games have been held subsequently every four years.[12]Continental championships have long been a vital component of the four-year calendar for sports whose pinnacle is the Olympic Games. They began in continents with relatively few organised international competitions between neighbouring countries. The 1937 Pan American Games were followed by the Pacific Games, the African Games and the Asian Games. The Pan American GamesThe idea of Pan American Games was conceived in 1932 duringthe Los Angeles Olympic Games, but the first officially sanctioned PanAm Games did not take place until 1951.1" World politics interferedfrom the start. 14 As a prelude to the Games originally planned for 1942,a festival called the 1937 Pan American Games was held in Dallas,Texas. At least 21 nations of South, Central and North America wereinvited, but only about a half dozen actually attended. In soccer, 1937 Pan-American Games (unofficial): The United States (represented by the Trenton Highlanders) lost to Winnipeg (representing Canada) 3-2 to finish in 3rd place of 3 teams.Dyreson, Mark. (2016). The Original Pan-American Games? The 1937 Dallas Pan-American Olympics. The International Journal of the History of Sport. 33. 1-23. 10.1080/09523367.2016.1152959. In 1937, Dallas, Texas, hosted a sporting festival that drew teams from across the Americas to a ‘Pan American Olympics’. Organized under the umbrella of the Greater Texas and Pan-American Exposition, the games drew hundreds of athletes for track and field contests, soccer football matches, and a boxing tournament. Though historians generally consider the 1951 Buenos Aires Pan-American Games as the genesis of the Western Hemisphere’s biggest sporting carnival, the Dallas games certainly inspired even if they did not directly inaugurate the Pan-American Games movement. Directed by George Preston Marshall, the owner of a professional gridiron football franchise and an ardent leader of segregation in that sport, the Pan-American Olympics paradoxically produced an interracial set of contests that matched black, white, and Latino athletes against one another in the heart of the segregated US South. The Dallas Pan-American festival reveals the enigmatic visions of their architect, illumines the racial and national cleavages of the 1930s, and highlights the persistent dream of an Olympic-style event that would include all of the Americas.Earle MeadowsInducted: 1996, athleteBorn: June 29, 1913 - Corinth, Mississippino longer with us: November 11, 1992EventsPole Vault - 4.54 mA world record holder in the days of the bamboo pole, Earle Meadows achieved his greatest fame by winning the pole vault at the 1936 Olympic Games, but 1937 was perhaps his greatest year from a record standpoint. On May 8 at Stanford, Calif., Meadows and University of Southern California teammate Bill Sefton broke the world record when they cleared 4.48m/14 feet 8.50 inches, appropriately tying for first place. Three weeks later, they both bettered that mark with clearances of 4.55m/14-11. Since the standards couldn't be raised any higher, Meadows and his teammate lost their chance to become the first vaulters to clear 15 feet. Their performances while leading USC to three NCAA team titles earned Meadows and Sefton the nickname "Heavenly Twins." In 1935 and 1936, Meadows also shared the NCAA title with Sefton, and he tied Sefton for the 1935 AAU title. Meadows was equally as successful indoors, winning national titles in 1937, 1940 and 1941. In the latter meet, he set a world indoor best of 4.45m/14-7.Records HeldWorld Record (indoor): Pole Vault - 4.45 mWorld Record: Pole Vault - 4.48 m (May 8, 1937 - )World Record: Pole Vault - 4.54 m (May 29, 1937 - )Championships1936 Olympic Games: Pole Vault - 4.35 m (1st)1935 USA Outdoor Championships: - 4.23 m (1st)1936 Olympic Trials: Pole Vault - 4.34 m (1st)1937 USA Indoor Championships: - 4.34 m (1st)1940 USA Indoor Championships: - 4.34 m (1st)1941 USA Indoor Championships: - 4.38 m (1st)1937 Pan American Games: - 4.12 m (3rd)1936 Olympic Games, Berlin, GermanyJohn Loaring Jr’s second competitive experience in the 400m hurdles was on his 21st birthday, August 3rd, in the heats at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. The following day, Loaring ran in both the semi-final and final of the 400m hurdles. He was the youngest and most inexperienced finalist, but managed to win the silver medal, finishing only 3/10ths of a second behind the favourite and world record holder, Glenn Hardin. On August 6th and 7th, Loaring ran four 400m races: first round, second round, semi-final, and the final, in which he placed sixth. On August 8th, Loaring anchored the 4x400m Canadian relay team. In the semi-final heat, Loaring received the baton ahead of Germany’s Rudolf Harbig, who later, in 1939, broke World Records in the 400m and 800m runs. Loaring purposely slowed near the end, letting Harbig win in front of his countrymen, and knowing that a Canadian second would qualify for the final. However, in the final, Canada’s third relay runner was fouled by an American runner, and Loaring received the baton seven meters behind Harbig. Loaring nearly caught Harbig, with Germany and Canada receiving the same time, but Loaring behind by less than a metre — Canada placing fourth.International press reported that officials huddled about the obvious foul, but ultimately decided not to disqualify the USA team, because the Canadian team hadn’t protested. Such was the gentlemanly “roll-with-the-punches” sportsmanship and politics of that earlier time. The popular German weekly, Fussball, selected Loaring as: “The toughest competitor of 1936…” The noted Olympic authors, Ross and Norris McWhirter, commented: “Loaring’s competitive record at the 1936 Olympics…must just about represent the most severe test to which any Olympic athlete has ever been subjected.” Loaring is still the only athlete to compete in all three Olympic male finals involving the 400m distance in any combination of Olympic Games, and he did so as he turned age 21. Like other young athletes, the onset of World War II deprived him of two Olympic Games during his prime years – one can only surmise what performances he could have delivered as an experienced athlete.Post-Olympic PerformancesImmediately after the Olympic events, Loaring competed in a British Empire vs USA meet in London, England, on August 15th, 1936. In a four-by-two-lap steeplechase relay, Loaring ran the anchor leg in a World Best Time, winning gold for the British Empire Team. He overcame a 12yd lead of USA’s anchorman, who had held the 3,000m steeplechase World Record until one week prior. This was Loaring’s one and only steeplechase experience. In the 1937 Pan-American Games in Dallas, Texas, Loaring’s favourite 400m hurdles event wasn’t on the program. However, he won a fourth-place medal in the 400m run. Three days later, Loaring competed in an Oxford-Cambridge versus Canada Dual Meet in Hamilton, Ontario. After winning the 220yd hurdles, Loaring upset Britain’s Olympic silver and gold medalist while winning the 440yd run.John Woodruff African American runner at the 1937 Pan American Games, he faced Elroy Robinson, a white runner who had just set a world record in the 800 meters. Mr. Woodruff won the race by 12 yards with a time of 1:47.8, almost two seconds faster than Robinson’s week-old record. But officials disallowed Mr. Woodruff’s time, ruling the track was improperly measured and was several feet short.

Warren Cullar "Arm Chair Dreams" Acrylic on Canvas Austin Texas Listed Artist

    1 in stock

Warren Cullar "Arm Chair Dreams" Acrylic on Canvas Austin Texas Listed Artist 12" x 16" with no issues or damage.Warren Cullar opened his first art gallery as a senior in college. After receiving a BFA in 1965, he joined a staff of six artists in a commercial ad agency and as he says: “I learned more in that one year than I did in 5 years in college." A bigger job was offered to him and he spent a brief career as an advertising director in a large department store. A move to Mexico to study art at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende was a major influence. The color of Mexico is evident throughout the art he has produced during his career. With an MFA degree under his belt, he received a teaching contract from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and later opened the art department at Western Texas College, completing 8 years of experience as a college art instructor. After spending the summer of 1976 in Egypt on a study grant that he had received from the college, he made the decision to become a full-time professional artist. He came to the Austin area and opened an art gallery and 5 years later moved into the Austin home he has now occupied for over 30 years. Warren started his art career by selling his hand pulled stone lithographs and watercolors. In the December 1978 issue of Southwest Art Magazine, he was featured in an 11-page article about his art. He continued to produce watercolors and enjoyed selling his work in art fairs in Texas, Colorado, and California. In 1982 he read a magazine article about the need for an adventure artist and began traveling the world using his skills as an artist on scientific expeditions in Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Spain, and Easter Island, to name a few of the 49 countries stamped in his passport. Warren travels the world with a sketchbook and watercolors to record his impressions of the various cultures and peoples he encounters. In the early 90’s he built an 840 sq. ft. painting studio on the back of his wooded property and took up acrylic painting; then he produced hand-pulled serigraphs and soft ground etchings. One of his collectors asked him to create a sculpture for women who had survived breast cancer. The sculpture was completed and he was captivated by working with clay. That was the first bronze he had created since his student days in Mexico. A large bronze commission was awarded to him and a new direction emerged. Today Warren laughs at the thought that for 20 years painting in watercolor was all he ever wanted to do. In 2004 he built a second studio dedicated to sculpture. Today, Warren and his wife, Kitty Biel, who has a dual career as an independent CPA , Cruise Planner, and Travel Agent, live and work from their spacious home, two studios and sculpture garden in Austin, Texas. You can find Kitty working in her treetop office on the second floor of their home and Warren creating in the sculpture or painting studio.alt Warren is an accomplished sculptor and painter, and he extends the opportunity for you to visit, explore his galleries/studios and gardens. You will quickly discover that he simply loves to create and recognizes opportunities to do so in all areas of their space, from the kitchen mosaic on the breakfast room floor to the backsplash in the kitchen made from fish fossils he dug in Wyoming. I'm not totally sure of the age but the man has passed away and the woman downsized everything, it was his. It was in a plastic case but I scratched and discarded it, the ball is mint.tw247

Manuel Garza Texas Hill country Oil on canvas landscape painting with wildTurkeys. Original oil on canvas painting 8" x 10" with a 14" x 16" frame. No issues or damage to painting or frame.Growing up in Central Texas, Manuel Garza is well acquainted with Texas hill country scenery. Garza recreates this scenery to perfection, capturing in oil the thick heat, bold sunlight, and cool shade of the state. Garza's work often features not only wildflowers, but quail, pheasant, turkeys, deer, and a host of domestic birds. "I am a landscape artist", he says, "but wildlife is part of that landscape. It adds life." Garza is largely self-taught, although he did attend the Texas School of Fine Arts and studied under Porfirio Salinas and Robert Wood, and cites them as major influences on his style. Manuel Garza's paintings are included in the collection of Lyndon B. Johnson, John Connally, Ben Barnes, and many others throughout the United States. tw74

Hand Colored Charles Beckendorf 25/30 Doe and Fawns. In great condition with no significant issues. Rare, hand colored, low edition number. 12" x 15" framed. Charles Beckendorf grew up in the small South Texas town of Mathis. After attaining a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Texas in Austin, Beckendorf and his family moved to Los Angeles, California where Beckendorf worked as an illustrator for Howard Hughes and Walt Disney. In the early 1960's, Beckendorf moved his family back to Texas and did illustrations for Texas Parks and Wildlife and Harry Jersig at Lone Star Beer. In the 1960's while living in Houston, Beckendorf introduced his pen and ink pointillism drawings as prints to the market and they became a huge success. Beckendorf moved to Fredericksburg, Texas in the mid 1960's and opened a small gallery on Main Street in 1971. Beckendorf was commissioned by the Houston Museum of Natural Science to paint a 13' high x 144' long mural of Africa for the African Hall, which took him almost six years to complete. In 1972 and 1973, Beckendorf rented the 100,000 square foot Astro Hall in Houston, Texas and held the largest "Artist and Art Dealers Market" ever known showcasing artists from Texas, other states in the United States, and many other countries. In the 1980's, Beckendorf published four large coffee table books of his paintings and drawings, titled "Images of Texas" and opened the largest one-artist gallery in the world at 16,000 square feet. He also published another book for the Texas Sesquicentennial in 1986, titled "Charles Beckendorf / Texas". Five-term Mayor of Houston, Texas, Kathy Whitmire proclaimed October 1, 1986 Charles Beckendorf Day. Beckendorf originals hung in Governor Ann Richards' office during her governorship from 1991 through 1995. Beckendorf published his sixth book titled "Charles Beckendorf Texas Wildlife" in 1992. Beckendorf was also chosen for two Texas non-game Stamp & Prints, American Kestrel in 1988 and Road Runners in 1995 and for the State of Texas Turkey Stamp & Print in 1995. Charles Beckendorf's art has been collected by prominent Texans and Texas families, as well as "those that wish they were" for decades.tw228

There are no reproductions other than the ones that were reissued in 1946 which clearly say 1946 Edition on them and while still scarce are much easier to come by than these that were actually from the 1936 Texas centennial celebration and likely had ice cream served in them at that celebration. Arthur Bishop Jeffreys (American/Texas, 1892-1970) large Texas landscape painting. 22" x 29" canvas 28" x 35" framed. No damage or notable issues. Nice old painting from the second quarter of the 20th century.Arthur Bishop Jeffreys, 1892-1970, was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He had a mixed career as a painter and newspaper journalist. Starting late to paint in 1923, when in his early thirties, he was employed, 1942 through 1969, by one newspaper, which changed its name three times: the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tyler Courier-Times, and Courier-Times-Telegraph. He had moved to Tyler, Texas from Dallas in 1936, and for the newspaper worked primarily as a proofreader. However, using the name Arthur Bishop, he also wrote feature articles and shorter columns. As a young man, his destiny lay elsewhere, he was employed by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company, apparently in Dallas, where he worked until 1918 as a road master's clerk, secretary to the chief engineer, and secretary to the general manager. Though he briefly studied in New York with Frederick Jarvis, Jeffreys was essentially self-taught. He died in Tyler, and is buried there. He was a member of the Art Students League, New York City; Chicago Art League, Illinois; Dallas Art Association; and Society of Independent Artists. His work is in the collections of the Hilton Hotel, Waco; and La Grange College, Georgia. His landscapes appeared in magazines including Holland's and Literary Digest in 1926. His 1927 painting of Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, autographed by the flyer, sold for $2,000 at an auction in New York City. Jeffrreys was able to make money from his similarly autographed paintings of World War I ace fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart, the first woman aviator to cross the Atlantic. Shows with Jeffreys work include the Exhibition of Texas Artists, Nashville Museum of Art, Tennessee (1927 prize); and Painters of Texas 1900-1950, Museums of Abilene (1989).

I know how frustrating it must be to you who are seeking to establish a value on the Echruseos art.I invented the process of putting small sheets of gold leaf on the reverse side of glass in 1970. I coined the name for my new technique. I took a Greek lexicon and invented a word to go with my art technique. Ek means 'out of'. Crus is 'gold'. Ous means 'having been done.' So literally the word Echruseos means, 'Out of gold having been done.' It is pronounced Ek-Cru-sos.During the next eight years I sold several million dollars’ worth of my "gold leaf" art all over the world. Many of the early pieces were sold for next to nothing. Many are priced anywhere between $500 and $25,000. This is a huge chasm in pricing. What this means is many people own the Echruseos and are not aware of what they have. You have all heard stories of someone finding a Norman Rockwell stuck in an attic, covered with dust. Once cleaned up they realized they have a very valuable piece of art.Since I stopped producing my Echruseos art in 1978 and several have broken due to mishandling, the supply is shrinking. My Echruseos art is in eleven museums and in my humble opinion one day will be a coveted collector item. I may well be dead before the art reaches it zenith; nevertheless I am fully convinced that this technique will be recognized as a rare collector item. Only time will validate my claims or prove me wrong. My sincere advice to you and your heirs is to hold on to the art, make sure it is secure and insure it for a considerable sum. It is with confidence that I say my epic historical novel on Texas, “Ten Years in Texas”, will be a successful published book. With the book my name will resurface in the art world. When that happens the true collectors will begin to surface. Be aware you own an extremely rare piece of art.
