McCabe silversmith was founded in Southern California by John McCabe in 1923 -- reaching its apex during the golden age of the Hollywood Cowboy era during the 1930s and 1940s when it shared the spotlight with its more well known competitors like Edward H. Bohlin. In 1931 McCabe was commissioned to construct the finest gold and silver mounted saddle outfit ever created for Ms. Muzic, a wealthy Los Angeles horse woman. That saddle cost over $20,000 during the depths of the depression and took six months to make. It was eventually acquired by Roy Rogers in the early 1950s and went on national display and exhibit as Roy’s calling card. Following McCabe’s death in an auto accident in 1930, the company was sold to Charlie Martinez, a nephew of John’s and its most prominent owner. Charlie expanded the silver line to include bolos, tie slides, saddle trimmings and conchos in addition to their popular ranger and trophy buckle line. Many of McCabe’s designs from 1938-1948 came from the popular and talented Bob Brown. When Martinez died in the late 1940s his widow sold the company and dies in 1960 to Bob Stanton of Sunset Trails.
