Chester Nez was a Navajo Code Talker in World War II and also a silversmith. He was one of the original 29 Navajo Marines who developed the unbreakable code used by the U.S. military in the Pacific theater. After the war, he used the G.I. Bill to study fine arts and worked as a painter for the Veterans Administration. He also created Navajo jewelry, often signing his work "C/J Nez".
