These talented<br>silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came<br>from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught<br>John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast<br>jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk<br>Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.<br><br>Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G.<br>Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.<br><br>The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of<br>Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make<br>forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known<br>trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they<br>started.<br><br>Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and<br>admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the<br>jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work<br>together to design their jewelry.<br><br>Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process,<br>although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to<br>obtain quality results.<br><br>The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create<br>two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones.<br>An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two<br>pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the<br>two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the<br>proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If<br>it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and<br>hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the<br>casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The<br>silver is then filed smooth and shaped.<br><br>If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold<br>the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the<br>bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece<br>is then polished to the shine the artist likes.<br><br>Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast<br>jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair<br>in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of<br>the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his<br>60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife,<br>Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have<br>three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family<br>tradition.<br><br>Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under<br>it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. c1850 Texian Campaigne Historical Staffordshire brown 9.5" Soup bowl James<br>Beech, General Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Chapultepec. in near mint<br>condition with no chips or stains. Fine overall crazing and a very tight less<br>than 1" hairline on the reverse side that doesn't go through to the front. It is<br>shown on the left center of the fifth picture. This is an extremely rare piece<br>of an already rare and desirable pattern. 9.5" wide x 1.5" deep.<br><br>The "Texian Campaigne" transferware pattern was introduced about 1837; although<br>made in Staffordshire, it was produced to appeal to Americans. The pattern was<br>designed to commemorate the 1835-1836 revolution fought against Mexico by Texans<br>for their independence (the word 'Texian' is the British form for Texas.)<br><br>The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836) was a rebellion of<br>colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) in putting up<br>armed resistance to the centralist government of Mexico. While the uprising was<br>part of a larger one, the Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces<br>opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican<br>government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with<br>the goal of annexation. The Mexican Congress passed the Tornel Decree, declaring<br>that any foreigners against Mexican troops "will be deemed pirates and dealt<br>with as such, being citizens of no nation presently at war with the Republic and<br>under no recognized flag". Only the province of Texas succeeded in breaking with<br>Mexico, establishing the Republic of Texas, and eventually being annexed by the<br>United States.<br><br>The revolution began in October 1835, after a decade of political and cultural<br>clashes between the Mexican government and the increasingly large population of<br>American settlers in Texas. The Mexican government had become increasingly<br>centralized and the rights of its citizens had become increasingly curtailed,<br>particularly regarding immigration from the United States. Colonists and Tejanos<br>disagreed on whether the ultimate goal was independence or a return to the<br>Mexican Constitution of 1824. While delegates at the Consultation (provisional<br>government) debated the war's motives, Texians and a flood of volunteers from<br>the United States defeated the small garrisons of Mexican soldiers by<br>mid-December 1835. The Consultation declined to declare independence and<br>installed an interim government, whose in led to political paralysis and a<br>dearth of effective governance in Texas. An ill-conceived proposal to invade<br>Matamoros siphoned much-needed volunteers and provisions from the fledgling<br>Texian Army. In March 1836, a second political convention declared independence<br>and appointed leadership for the new Republic of Texas.<br><br>Determined to avenge Mexico's honor, Santa Anna vowed to personally retake<br>Texas. His Army of Operations entered Texas in mid-February 1836 and found the<br>Texians completely unprepared. Mexican General José de Urrea led a contingent of<br>troops on the Goliad Campaign up the Texas coast, defeating all Texian troops in<br>his path and executing most of those who surrendered. Santa Anna led a larger<br>force to San Antonio de Béxar (or Béxar), where his troops defeated the Texian<br>garrison in the Battle of the Alamo, killing almost all of the defenders.<br><br>A newly created Texian army under the command of Sam Houston was constantly on<br>the move, while terrified civilians fled with the army, in a melee known as the<br>Runaway Scrape. On March 31, Houston paused his men at Groce's Landing on the<br>Brazos River, and for the next two weeks, the Texians received rigorous military<br>training. Becoming complacent and underestimating the strength of his foes,<br>Santa Anna further subdivided his troops. On April 21, Houston's army staged a<br>surprise assault on Santa Anna and his vanguard force at the Battle of San<br>Jacinto. The Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful Texians executed<br>many who tried to surrender. Santa Anna was taken hostage; in exchange for his<br>life, he ordered the Mexican army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. Mexico<br>refused to recognize the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between<br>the two countries continued into the 1840s. Part of a significant collection of Henry<br>Steig Jewelry purchased directly from him in the 50's-60's that I'm lucky enough<br>to be able to offer. Before he became a jeweler, he was a jazz<br>musician, painter, sculptor, commercial artist, cartoonist, photographer, short<br>story writer and novelist.<br><br>"Henry was a Renaissance man," says New Yorker cartoonist Mischa Richter, who<br>was Steig's good friend and Provincetown neighbor.<br><br>Henry Anion Steig was born on February 19, 1906, in New York City. His parents,<br>Joseph and Laura, had come to America at the turn of the century, from Lvov<br>(called Lemberg in German), which was then in the Polish port of the<br>Austro-Hungarian Empire. Joseph was a housepainter and Laura, a seamstress.<br><br>They had four sons, Irwin, Henry, William and Arthur, all of them versatile,<br>talented and artistic. William Steig is the well-known New Yorker cartoonist and<br>author-illustrator of children's books. lrwin was a writer of short stories for<br>the New Yorker. Arthur was a painter and poet whose poems were published in the<br>New Republic and Poetry magazines.<br><br>William Steig recalls, "My father and mother both began pointing and become<br>exhibiting artists after their sons grew up." In the May 14, 1945, issue of<br>Newsweek magazine, an article was published about an exhibition, "possibly the<br>first one family show on Art Row (57th Street)" at the New Art Circle Gallery.<br>It was called "The Eight Performing Steigs, Artists All." Included were<br>paintings By Joseph and Laura Steig; drawings and sculpture by William and<br>paintings by his wife, Liza; paintings by Arthur and his wife, Aurora; and<br>photographs by Henry and paintings by his wife, Mimi. The only brother not<br>included was Irwin, "the only non-conformist Steig," who was working at that<br>time as advertising manager of a Connecticut soap manufacturer.<br><br>In the article "the brothers attribute the family's abundance of good artists to<br>the fact that we all like each other's work…get excited about it. Whenever<br>anyone starts they get lots of encouragement. Joseph Steig adds, 'Painting is a<br>contagious thing. If you lived in our environment, you would probably point.'"<br><br>Henry Steig grew up in this extraordinary environment. The family lived in the<br>Bronx. After graduating from high school, Henry Steig went to City College<br>(CCNY). After three years he left to study painting and sculpture at the<br>National Academy of Design. He was also an accomplished musician, playing<br>saxophone, violin and classical guitar, and while he was in college, he began<br>working as a jazz musician. From about 1922, when only sixteen years old, until<br>1932 he played reed instruments with local dance bands.<br><br>After four years at the National Academy, Steig worked as a commercial artist<br>and cartoonist. He signed his cartoons "Henry Anton" because his brother William<br>was working as a cartoonist at the same time, for many of the same magazines.<br>From about 1932 to 1936, Henry Anton cartoons appeared in Life, Judge, New<br>Yorker and other magazines.<br><br>Steig began a writing career in 1935 that lasted until about 1947. He became<br>very successful and well known as a short story writer, with stories appearing<br>regularly in Saturday Evening Post, New Yorker, Esquire, Colliers and others.<br>They were often humorous tales about jazz and the jazz musicians who populated<br>the world of music in the roaring twenties. Other stories were about his Bronx<br>childhood. He also wrote nonfiction magazine pieces, including a New Yorker<br>profile of Benny Goodmon and jazz criticism. Several of his nonfiction articles<br>were illustrated by William Steig.<br><br>In 1941 , Alfred A. Knopf published Henry Steig's novel, Send Me Down. The<br>story, told with absolute realism, is about two brothers who become jazz<br>musicians in the twenties. On the book jacket, Steig wrote, "Much of the<br>material for Send Me Down was gathered during my years as a jazz musician<br>playing with local jazz bands and with itinerant groups in vaudeville and on<br>dance hall tour engagements. Although I was only second-rate as a musician, I<br>know my subject from the inside, and I believe I was the first to write stories<br>about jazz musicians, based on actual personal experience." His son, Michael,<br>recalls that there was some interest in making a movie of the book. "My father<br>told me that John Garfield wanted to play the lead character."<br><br>Steig did go to Hollywood in 1941, under contract to write screenplays. He was<br>going to work with Johnny Mercer, the songwriter. After the ing of Pearl Harbor<br>on December 7, he returned to New York. "He undoubtedly would have returned<br>anyway," says Michael Steig. "He was not happy with the contract his agent had<br>negotiated for him." Mischa Richter odds, "Henry was very unimpressed with<br>Hollywood."
