Due to reflections it's difficult to present items of this type in the light the deserve in the time available to me.Antonio Pineda
(1919-2009)In the mountain town of Taxco in Mexico’s state of Guerrero,
large-scale mining can be dated to thesixteenth century, and silver is a way of
life. In the years following the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), jewelry and other
silver objects were crafted there with an entirely innovative approach,
informedby modernism and the creation of a new Mexican national identity. Today,
at the age of 89, AntonioPineda is one of two living members of the Taxco School
and is recognized as a world-class designerand a Mexican national treasure.
Nearly two hundred examples of Pineda’s acclaimed silver work willbe displayed
in Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, a
travelingexhibition debuting at the Fowler Museum Aug. 24, 2008.Significantly,
given Pineda’s many accomplishments and international renown, he identifies
himselfprimarily as a taxqueño, or Taxco, silversmith. From its inception, the
Taxco movement broke newground in technical achievement and design. While
American-born, Taxco-based designer WilliamSpratling has been credited with
spearheading the contemporary Taxco silver movement, it was agroup of talented
Mexican designers who went on to establish independent workshops and develop
thedistinctive “Taxco School.” These designers incorporated numerous aesthetic
orientations—Pre-Columbian art; silverwork, images, and other artwork from the
Mexican Colonial period; andlocal popular arts—merging them within the broad
spectrum of modernism.Pineda himself is lauded for his bold designs and
ingenious use of gemstones. Silver Seduction tracesthe evolution of his work
from the 1930s–70s, and includes more than fifty each of necklaces andbracelets,
as well as numerous beautiful rings, earrings and diverse examples of his
hollowware andtableware. All of the works feature Pineda’s hard-to-achieve
combination of highly refined and hand-wrought appeal.Pineda’s jewelry is
especially known for its elegant acknowledgment of the human form. It is
oftensaid that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is
worn. So, for example, a thickgeometric necklace that might at first glance seem
too weighty or rigid to wear comfortably is, in fact, faceted, hinged, or
hollowed in such a way that it gracefully encircles the neck or drapes
seductivelydown the décolletage. In addition, no other taxqueño jeweler used as
many costly semiprecious stones or set them with asmuch ingenuity, skill, and
variety as did Pineda. Circa third quarter of the 20th century.Emory Sekaquaptewa (December 28, 1928 – December 14, 2007) was a Hopi leader and scholar from the Third Mesa village of Hotevilla. Known as the "Noah Webster of the Hopi Nation," [1] he is best known for his role in compiling the first dictionary of the Hopi language. He became assistant professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona in 1972, and was Professor in its Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology from 1990 to 2007. Emory received the 4th Annual Spirit of the Heard Award by the Heard Museum in October 2007.BackgroundEmory Sekaquaptewa was born in Hotevilla in the Third Mesa, on the Hopi Reservation of northern Arizona, in 1928. His birth was never formally noted so he took 28 December as his birthday for official purposes. He was believed to be the first Arizona Native American to attend West Point, and he later attended law school at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1970.He held various leadership positions within the village of Kykotsmovi, as well as positions on the Hopi Tribal Council and serving as a judge on the appellate division of the Hopi Tribal Court.Sekaquaptewa was at one time married to Beverly Sekaquaptewa, and was the son of Helen and Emory Sekaquaptewa Sr who met at the Phoenix Indian School about 1915. His mother's story was told in the book Me and Mine: The Life Story Of Helen Sekaquaptewa as told to Louise Udall, Published by University of Arizona Press, Tucson, 1969. His father was a farmer and tribal court judge.[6] Among his siblings were Abbott, longtime Tribal Chairman, and Marlene, a political leader and quilt maker.[6]Sekaquaptewa received the 4th Annual Spirit of the Heard Award by the Heard Museum on October 5, 2007, for his contributions to the Heard Mission: "To educate the public about the heritage and the living cultures and art of Native peoples, with an emphasis on the peoples of the Southwest."ScholarshipSekaquaptewa was the "Cultural Editor" on the Hopi Dictionary Project, which produced the first ever Hopi dictionary: Hopi Dictionary/Hopìikwa Lavàytutuveni: A Hopi–English Dictionary of the Third Mesa Dialect in 1998. The 900-page dictionary contains entries on 30,000 words, as well as a sketch of Hopi grammar. This dictionary is credited with playing an important role in revitalizing the Hopi language and took him thirty years to complete, since the language had no standard or received variant and is highly complex. He became assistant professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona in 1972, and was Professor in its Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology from 1990 to 2007. As an academic, Sekaquaptewa was the coauthor of books and articles including a chapter on the Hopi concept of clowning called "One More Smile for a Hopi Clown".HopicraftsAbout 1961 Sekaquaptewa and his brother Wayne Sekaquaptewa opened Hopi Enterprises in Phoenix, a business which employed Hopi silversmiths to make overlay jewelry for sale. Two of the silversmiths hired were Harry Sakyesva and Bernard Dawahoya. In 1962 Emory and Wayne relocated the business to the village of Kykotsmovi at Third Mesa on the Hopi Reservation and renamed it Hopicrafts. The business developed its own designs and style of overlay and successfully competed with the Hopi Silvercraft Guild on Second Mesa. It employed many talented silversmiths while in operation. Pieces made in the shop all bore a shop hallmark of a conjoined capitol "H" and lowercase "C". Sekaquaptewa made silver jewelry that was hallmarked SEKAQUAPTEWA, his brother Wayne only occasionally made jewelry and shared the hallmark. Hopicrafts closed in 1983. His nephew Phillip Sekaquaptewa, son of Wayne Sekaquaptewa, was a talented silversmith and skilled at not only Hopi silver overlay technique but an original contemporary master of stone and silver flush inlay. All items will likely have some age appropriate/expected wear, the older they are the more wear they should have. Circa third quarter of the 20th century.. Fits up to a 1.5" belt.Master Hopi Silversmith, Waterhouse Clan – Shungopavi, Second MesaVictor Coochwytewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century. A master of overlay jewelry and a pillar of his community, his work helped define the standards and aesthetics that Hopi jewelers continue to follow today. His career, which spanned more than 60 years, earned him national recognition, including being named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994.Born on June 7, 1922, in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Victor was a member of the Waterhouse Clan. He first learned the basics of silversmithing in 1940 under the guidance of Paul Saufkie. But his early career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served with distinction in the South Pacific. A member of the 167th Combat Military Police and later the 5309th Infantry Division under General Frank Merrill (Merrill’s Marauders), Victor saw heavy combat in Burma and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Victor returned to Hopi and became one of the first students in the now-legendary Veterans’ Classes established under the G.I. Bill. Taught by Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie, these classes marked the beginning of a new era in Hopi silversmithing. Victor not only mastered the overlay technique but innovated within it—introducing a background texturing method inspired by leatherwork that became a defining feature of Hopi overlay jewelry.Victor's designs, executed in both sterling silver and gold, are known for their precision, spiritual depth, and elegant symbolism. Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world. In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work,” he once said with characteristic humility. He attributed the success of both his crops and his craft to blessings from the Creator. “When you pray, you should pray for all things, and in return, all things are benefited. Nothing can be accomplished without prayer.”Victor retired from silversmithing and farming in 2006 and continued to live with his family at Hopi until his passing on July 3, 2011, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on in the work of his descendants and in the broader community of Hopi artists who follow the path he helped shape. His jewelry remains among the most iconic and sought-after expressions of Hopi artistry—no serious collection of Hopi overlay work is truly complete without a piece by Victor Coochwytewa. 12.75" Texas Studio Art Glass Vase Michael McDougal 7" wide No cracks, chips, scratches, or restorations. Inspired by nature and known for his sense of color and elegant whimsy, Glass artist Michael McDougal lives and works in the Texas Hill Country. He was introduced to glass by Jane Duryea, protégé of Robert Willson and went on to study at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, under Jane Bruce, Claire Kelly & Antony Schafermeyer and Boyd Sugiki. McDougal has spent time in the "fornaces" of Murano, Italy, as well. Today, he works with his friend and mentor Jason Lawson in studios in Fischer, Texas, a small town north of San Antonio. "Glass is an astoundingly versatile medium," says McDougal."It has an inherent music in it. Working with it in molten form is rhythmic… more of a dance than a process.” Michael Monroe, former curator and director of the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery describes a pitcher from McDougal's collection as "…capturing the essence of molten glass in a moment of frozen elegance. The handle, with its dynamic but delicate pattern is beautifully integrated to give both a sense of motion and balance to the piece." "Whether appreciating it or creating it, I love art that elicits a sense of wonder, a sense of awe, makes me grin or laugh," says McDougal. "Whether an exploration of beauty, whimsy, or that huge realm of the unknown, it must remind me that all our human stresses and strains are insignificant.” McDougal's work is featured in galleries throughout Texas and California. He has been featured in shows in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston and Galveston, among other cities.

There are few gemstones that display the 'play-of-color' phenomenon better than Labradorite, reds, blues, purples, yellows and more dance before your eyes as it turns in your hand but there is much more to discover about this rare beauty. The Schiller effect, labradorescence, light interference, lattice distortions are some of the scientific explanations for flashes of color in Labradorite gemstones which we can go into later but perhaps the Inuit people of Labrador in Canada explain it best by saying that the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis were trapped within Labradorite rocks. The story goes that a mighty Eskimo warrior freed the colors that dazzle the Polar skies with blows from his spear but could not break all the rocks leaving a number of Labradorite gemstones for us to collect then carve, polish and admire to this very day. isshelf
