Theodore B. Starr was a company of silversmiths founded in New York in 1862 by Theodore Starr.[1] In 1864, he was joined by Herman Marcus, and the company became known as Starr and Marcus.[1] Marcus left to join Tiffany's in 1877, and Starr bought back control of the company, with the name of the company becoming Theodore B. Starr.[1] The company was incorporated in 1907 by Starr's son, before being bought in 1918 by Reed and Barton, a silver firm, and finally closing in 1923. TW184

    1 in magazzino

Gentile Glass Millefiori Paperweight. Nice large paperweight in mint condition with no scratches or dings. 3.25" tall x 3" wide. The original glass worker in the Gentile family was Peter Gentile, born in Naples, Italy in 1884. He worked in Naples(Italy), Rochester (Pennsylvania), and Morgantown (West Virginia) before building his own factory in Star City (West Virginia) in 1947. His sons, Frankie, John and Joe Gentile helped him make paperweights in the off hours at the Guild Factory in Morgantown. However, most paperweight production since WWII has been associated with Peter, John, or John's wife Gertrude Gentile. Few weights were signed prior to1963. It is believed that Gentile Glass remained in production until 2006. Most, if not all, paperweights produced from 1975 on were signed. For more information, you can read about the Gentiles in the book American Glass Paperweights and Their Makers by Jean Melvin (1967 and 1970). b34

No restorations or excessive crazing/stains.

The "Texian Campaigne" transferware pattern was introduced about 1837; although
made in Staffordshire, it was produced to appeal to Americans. The pattern was
designed to commemorate the 1835-1836 revolution fought against Mexico by Texans
for their independence (the word 'Texian' is the British form for Texas.)

The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836) was a rebellion of
colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) in putting up
armed resistance to the centralist government of Mexico. While the uprising was
part of a larger one, the Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces
opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican
government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with
the goal of annexation. The Mexican Congress passed the Tornel Decree, declaring
that any foreigners against Mexican troops "will be deemed pirates and dealt
with as such, being citizens of no nation presently at war with the Republic and
under no recognized flag". Only the province of Texas succeeded in breaking with
Mexico, establishing the Republic of Texas, and eventually being annexed by the
United States.

The revolution began in October 1835, after a decade of political and cultural
clashes between the Mexican government and the increasingly large population of
American settlers in Texas. The Mexican government had become increasingly
centralized and the rights of its citizens had become increasingly curtailed,
particularly regarding immigration from the United States. Colonists and Tejanos
disagreed on whether the ultimate goal was independence or a return to the
Mexican Constitution of 1824. While delegates at the Consultation (provisional
government) debated the war's motives, Texians and a flood of volunteers from
the United States defeated the small garrisons of Mexican soldiers by
mid-December 1835. The Consultation declined to declare independence and
installed an interim government, whose in led to political paralysis and a
dearth of effective governance in Texas. An ill-conceived proposal to invade
Matamoros siphoned much-needed volunteers and provisions from the fledgling
Texian Army. In March 1836, a second political convention declared independence
and appointed leadership for the new Republic of Texas.

Determined to avenge Mexico's honor, Santa Anna vowed to personally retake
Texas. His Army of Operations entered Texas in mid-February 1836 and found the
Texians completely unprepared. Mexican General José de Urrea led a contingent of
troops on the Goliad Campaign up the Texas coast, defeating all Texian troops in
his path and executing most of those who surrendered. Santa Anna led a larger
force to San Antonio de Béxar (or Béxar), where his troops defeated the Texian
garrison in the Battle of the Alamo, killing almost all of the defenders.

A newly created Texian army under the command of Sam Houston was constantly on
the move, while terrified civilians fled with the army, in a melee known as the
Runaway Scrape. On March 31, Houston paused his men at Groce's Landing on the
Brazos River, and for the next two weeks, the Texians received rigorous military
training. Becoming complacent and underestimating the strength of his foes,
Santa Anna further subdivided his troops. On April 21, Houston's army staged a
surprise assault on Santa Anna and his vanguard force at the Battle of San
Jacinto. The Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful Texians executed
many who tried to surrender. Santa Anna was taken hostage; in exchange for his
life, he ordered the Mexican army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. Mexico
refused to recognize the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between
the two countries continued into the 1840s. The annexation of Texas as the 28th
state of the United States, in 1845, led directly to the Mexican–American War.

tw177

Jacinto. The Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful Texians executed
many who tried to surrender. c1860 Staffordshire Prattware Teapot Stand and Plate with Cattle Farm Scene. 2 great pieces from mid to late 19th century. Teapot stand is 6.5" and plate is 8 5/8". Neither have any cracks, chips, or restorations. Both have the expected crazing of 150 year old earthenware. Selling both pieces shown. In the 19th century, the Pratt name was associated with the fine, usually multi-coloured, transfer printed engravings used to decorate the lids of earthenware pots used for food, pharmaceutical products and toiletries. The business also produced domestic earthenware including relief moulded earthenware (especially jugs) and tableware with underglaze, multi-coloured decoration (‘Prattware’). Terracotta and parian ware were other wares, and Godden (1988) notes that there are examples of mid-19th century porcelain printed with Pratt multi-colour underglaze prints, however, these may have been bought-in ware decorated by the company. Whilst Felix Pratt was the commercial driving force behind the business, the artist was a Jesse Austin who joined Pratt in the early-1840. He was an accomplished watercolour artist and engraver and over nearly 40 years, the business produced over 550 poly chrome prints used to decorate the now well known pot lids. Pratt’s first under-glaze, polychrome pot lid was made in 1847 and was a scene ‘Grace before Meals’. Austin’s subject included royalty, famous people, city scenes – there are eleven views of London – and this portrayal of the life and times of Victorian England is one of the reasons for the lid’s popularity today. Austin also made minature watercolour copies of famous paintings and these too appear on pot lids and Prattware. Although the pot lids have become well known, the engravings were also used on the containers themselves, on plates and on other domestic earthenware manufactured by the business and it is this good-quality domestic pottery that is termed ‘Prattware’. tw176

Guaranteed authentic, great piece of
art glass by well listed artist that has works in all the big museums.

Maurice Heaton grew up with two generations of English glass artists and began
experimenting with flat and molded glass as early as 1930. He invented a process
in 1947 for firing and shaping his glassware in the studio furnace, which
started the ball rolling for the studio glass movement of the 1960s. Heaton’s
work spans seven decades, and through his unique range of murals, window
hangings, lighting fixtures and tableware, he is considered by many a “true
original” (Neues Glas, April 1985).
tw177

16.5" Polia Pillin(1909-1992) Mid century Modern California Art Pottery Bowl
late 1940's-50's. Exceptional early heavily potted Pillin piece just discovered
estate fresh. Bought from Polia for $75, I'm thinking the 101 on the tag
indicates it was likely her 101st piece made. This is a really big bowl with
typical crazing and 3 of the tiniest glaze flakes on the outside rim. No cracks,
chips, or restorations.

Polish-born Polia Pillin (1909-1992) and her husband William established their
ceramic studio, The Pillin Art Pottery Company, in their Los Angeles, CA garage
in 1948. Her husband shaped and glazed the pots that became canvases that Polia
used to paint fanciful scenes of people and animals in the mid-century style.
Thousands of pieces were produced and Polia became one of the most highly
regarded of contemporary studio potters today.

The clay used for Pillin pottery was typically red-brick in color. William
experimented with different glazes and produced some pieces without Polia’s
artwork. However, it was Polia’s artistic designs that garnered her
international recognition. Polia was inspired by the Cubism movement and by the
works of Pablo Picasso whom she greatly admired. Her style is often referred to
as “Byzantine”. Polia’s favorite subjects were women, horses, birds, fish and
other animals painted over colorfully rich glazes. The overall pallet had an
organic, jewel-toned quality.

Each piece of Pillin pottery was hand-thrown, glazed, painted and hence, unique.
Because Pillin worked from her garage (and in her kitchen when she lived in
Chicago), she did not have access to expert tradesmen, chemists or specialized
equipment that could mass produce her work. For that reason, most Pillin pottery
is highly crazed. Rare pieces with little to no crazing command higher values.

Most pieces of Pillin pottery were produced beginning in 1948 and marked on the
bottom with Polia’s signature “Pillin” in either thick or thin black ink. Rare
pieces produced in her Chicago kitchen in 1946 and 1947 are incised “46” or
“47”. Some very early pieces are marked “W+P” above the Pillin signature to
indicate William throwing the pieces and Polia decorating them. Thicker thrown
pieces tend to indicate earlier works.

1987 Chris Hammack Original Wood Carving "Worlds Greatest Lobbyist" Fort Worth
Texas. 10.5" tall x 4 3/8" wide at base. Extremely rare find by a noted artist
that started the same year this was created reproducing his sculptures in resin
which have sold all over the world. This is one piece of solid carved wood other
than the round base. The carving is incredible and it's obvious why he's been so
successful. This was under a glass dome all it's life and is in mint condition.
It will be extremely well packed to get there in the same condition. I won't be
including the dome as it would complicate shipping. Below is a bio from his
website.

After all these years, one thing remains,

Chris Hammack loves to whittle and make people laugh.

Chris’s carving career began over 36 years ago after a thirty foot fall landed
him in the hospital. During a five month convalescence he picked up a piece of
firewood and a pocket knife and began carving caricatures, of which he had
sketched as a young boy growing up in Texas.

Within a couple of years, Chris was competing in carving competitions and
bringing home some blue ribbons.

The years following would begin to bring national acclaim to his work as a
woodcarver. In 1987, Hammack started a very successful wholesale business
reproducing his original carvings in resin. This company, Spit N’ Whittle, led
to his work selling around the globe. During these years he also designed
several successful gift lines for other major gift companies in the US.

Hammack has shared his carving talent through teaching numerous live seminars
nationwide, and now also teaches classes one on one over the internet.

Chris happily says,

“For me, woodcarving has never lost its magic. Give me a good piece of basswood
and a sharp knife and I’m content”

Today, Chris lives on a small island in Mexico where he still creates his
original works of art, and teaches.
tw162

Cantagalli Antique Itanian Faience Reticulated Plate with Crest. 9.5" wide with no cracks, chips, or restorations. 19th century. About Ulisse Cantagalli Ulisse Cantagalli was a superb artist and an even better businessman. Not much of him is known before 1878 when he took over the family factory in Florence and started to produce highly decorative Italian ceramics in the Renaissance style. At the time the taste for this kind of pottery was a very hot trend in the English speaking countries. He devoted his artistic energy to the understanding of the techniques and the designs of the old masters from Gubbio, Deruta, Urbino and other important ceramic centers. His ability to master the ruby and golden luster techniques of Mastro Giorgio Andreoli brought the factory to fame, particularly in Britain. The passion for Italian pottery and its role in the success of Cantagalli’s factory is well described in a delicious article published in the New York Times in 1879, titled “The Making of Majolica: A Florence Pottery Factory”. The event that more than any other contributed to the International success of Cantagalli was his friendship with William de Morgan, Britain’s most talented and most admired pottery and tile designer of his days. He introduced him to influential collectors in England and US and encouraged him to participate to International exhibitions. In a short time, Cantagalli works were highly regarded in English speaking countries, where they still are popular Collector’s items. Cantagalli died in 1901. His wife and daughter continued to operate the factory in Florence. In 1934 they sold it together with the Cantagalli’s trademark to Amerigo Menegatti, former artistic director of the factory. The economic turmoil following World War II forced Menegatti to a step change in production. He began to offer more utilitarian items, which still bore the famous cockerel that English speaking collectors find so appealing. The Cantagalli factory closed in 1985. The production of Cantagalli ware is now over, although the Menegatti family still owns the trademark. TW156
