He had been apprenticed in the art of silversmithing by his grandfather and father, and early on, he made jewelry with a filigree look. In 1941 he moved his workshop to Taxco and adopted styles that were more in line with the tourist pieces produced there.During the 1950s, piecework was farmed out to smaller family workshops in the Taxco area, and the pieces were marked Talleres de los Ballesteros. These pieces were sold in shops throughout the country, including Mexico City and Acapulco. The company also began exporting jewelry in 1952.A modernized corporate version of Los Ballesteros continues to sell its products, both jewelry, and decorative giftware, through stores in Mexico as well as through other vendors worldwide. Typically a huge ring is in the 30<br>gram range, this is 110.5 grams size 8, contemporary ring by a well known and<br>respected artisan with no damage or detectable wear. 3" x 4" face.<br><br>Navajo artist Ernest R. Begay Sr. was born and raised in Kayenta - Chilchinbeto,<br>AZ. In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High<br>School. “We used copper in the class, but that’s where I got my start. I took<br>the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch<br>my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap<br>silver to work with,” recalls Ernest.<br><br>Ernest’s career in jewelry making didn’t really take off until he entered some<br>rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup<br>Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which<br>helped him begin his career as jewelry artist.<br><br>Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise<br>cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Large Matl style Sterling Turquoise Amethyst repousse birds pendant/pin,MAT-MATILDE POULAT & RICARDO SALAS JEWELRY Matl is the mark that appears on some of the most beautiful and unique jewelry in Mexico. Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl, has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water, atl.As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexico’s intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art.Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different pieces.Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a comparison of their work.In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own. Her jewelry has the same charm and delightful surface and colorful quality of the old lacquer work of Uruapan. Spratling`s admiration for matl silver reflects his recognition of their shared appreciation for Mexican native art. This mutual inspiration led each of the two artists in different directions within the same medium. The exuberance of matl silver resembles the interiors of the churches in Puebla, like the chapel of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, where Indians covered the interior of the dome with polychromed and gilded angels. In matl silver, the introduction of color is accomplished with bits of coral, turquoise, and amethyst quartz. The surfaces are decorated with applied wire and elaborated with embossing and repousse of astounding complexity (pl.XXIII-1, XXIII-10). Matilde Poulat and Ricardo Salas have been successful in incorporating the artistic language of the Mixtecs into jewelry and silver figures with imagination, drama, and with a style that is completely personal.

Large Emil Brenk Sterling World Map Cigar box. Emil Brenk made the highest<br>quality humidors that were marketed by Dunhill, they also made the cases for<br>early 20th century Automaton singing bird music boxes that sell for thousands of<br>dollars. In other words this vintage box from the third quarter of the 20th<br>century is of the highest quality as hopefully evident from my pictures. Appears<br>unused, hallmarked as shown, original Willem Van Pampus Jeweler's presentation<br>box in like new condition. The silver box appears like new inside and out with<br>no dents, detectable wear, or other issues. Outside measurements are 10 3/16"<br>(25.75cm) wide x 7 5/16 (18.5cm) deep x 2" (5cm) tall. Inside dimensions are<br>17.5cm x 24.75cm wide (wide adjustable spacer) as shown. 1.3 kg on my shipping<br>scale, metals scale isn't handy. c1930 Bohemian art glass Buddha liqueur set. Ultra rare and cool, most likely<br>Czech made from the 20's or 30's. No damage to buddha, shot glasses and small<br>decanter are super clean with only the tiniest roughness to ground rims and tip<br>of stopper. No large chips, slight wear to gilding. Buddha is 14.25" tall x 9.5<br>" wide. This set is fully functional, hinge is good, snaps shut and stays<br>shut...but it is pushing 100 years old and if I personally were to actually use<br>this which I think would be great as it's extremely fun.. Still I would put<br>something behind it for Buddha's head to rest on while it's open or put it close<br>to a wall as I had it for the pics just to not put too much stress on the 90 or<br>so year old hinge as the top is rather heavy.<br><br>These were also made in pink in green, this is the most rare and desirable<br>color.

Pat Areias Hammered Sterling belt buckle with cool monogram. Heavy extremely high quality buckle 2 3/8" x 1 5/8", fits a 1" belt. 53.7 grams Each piece of Pat Areias's artistry is hand rendered, one by one. As such, they may be similar, but they are not the same. “The essence of hand fabrication," Areias says, “is that every piece is made by an artisan as an original." Using a jewelry saw, buckles are cut by hand out of sheet silver and hand forged, then dapped and individually chased and soldered to produce her finished works. Pat Areias Sterling began in 1987 in Cuernavaca, Mexico, with the introduction of a three-piece buckle set which became the foundation of the designer's business. Two years later, she added silver jewelry to her collection. Reminiscent of the Art Deco era, her designs are marked by a contemporary style. Though she was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley to third generation Portuguese dairy farmers, she pursued her interest in the traditions of her Latin descent by studying the Portuguese and Spanish cultures, arts and languages at the University of California at Santa Barbara. c1890 Mt Washington Crown Milano American art glass hand painted marmalade jar.<br>4" tall x 4" wide with handle with no damage.<br><br><br>MT. WASHINGTON AND PAIRPOINT GLASS<br><br>Mt. Washington and its successor, the Pairpoint Corporation, was one of<br>America’s longest-running luxury glass companies (1837-1957), one that rivaled<br>its better known contemporaries, Tiffany and Steuben. It constantly reinvented<br>and re-invigorated its business through creativity in texture, decoration,<br>pattern, and color - developing a variety of styles and decorating techniques<br>which were so technically complex that few are even practiced today.<br><br>The Mt. Washington Glass Company was founded in South Boston in 1837, and moved<br>to New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1870. In 1880, Thomas J. Pairpoint, an English<br>silversmith, was hired to run the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, another<br>company in New Bedford which Mt. Washington’s owners established to produce<br>ornate silver-plated mounts for Mt. Washington glass.<br><br>In 1894, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company absorbed Mt. Washington, and the<br>company was renamed the Pairpoint Corporation in 1900, which remained the<br>company’s name until it went out of business in 1938. It was revived briefly as<br>the Gundersen-Pairpoint Glass Company but closed permanently in 1957. The<br>company’s most successful years were from 1880 (in the height of the opulent<br>Gilded Age) to 1930 (the end of the exuberant Roaring Twenties).<br><br>MT. WASHINGTON ART GLASS AND CUT GLASS<br><br>Englishman Frederick Shirley was hired in 1872 to run Mt. Washington’s<br>chandelier department, and two years later was put in charge of the entire<br>company. Shirley was entrepreneurial and litigious, quick to adopt new designs<br>and quick to complain if he thought any other firm was copying his wares. By the<br>time he resigned in 1891, he had amassed a total of 27 patents and five design<br>patents for various types of glass, most of which were quite successful.<br><br>In 1885, Shirley introduced Burmese glass, a translucent glass that shaded from<br>yellow to pink, which was highly decorated in the elegant and sophisticated<br>style characteristic of the day. It became an immediate success on the Art Glass<br>market. Shirley was a good businessman and took advantage of the dawning age of<br>advertising to promote Burmese glass extensively.<br><br>Mt. Washington’s large decorating shop specialized in enameling. The decorators<br>who worked on Burmese glass also applied their skills to a variety of other<br>decorated glasses with exotic names like Royal Flemish, Crown Milano, Colonial,<br>and Pearl Satin Ware. By 1890, the company was advertising itself as<br>“Headquarters in America for Art Glass Wares.”

1994 David Lotton Shot Glasses Alpha and beta. Selling the two vessels for you to use for whatever. Tallest is about the size of a typical shot glass or cordial 2" tall x 1.5" wide, the other is 1.25" tall x 1.5" wide. Smaller is inscribed as a gift from David. No damage to either. DAVID LOTTON David Lotton is a second generation American glassblower. He is the oldest son of Charles Lotton and was introduced to the world of glassblowing at a very young age. In 1970, Charles started building a furnace and began blowing pieces of glass from melted down pop bottles in a shed behind their house. David was there in this infancy and he was Charles first assistant at the age of ten. David has vivid memories of his childhood working in the shop with his father. When most children were playing childhood games he was spending time after school and on the weekends helping him at the bench. By the age of 14 he started learning how to do finishing work, polishing the bottom of the glass flat. David eventually followed in his fathers' footsteps and by the age of 15 began making paperweights. That ignited a passion to begin glass blowing. c1880 Mt Washington Burmese Glossy Footed milk pitcher. 5.75" tall x 4" wide<br>with handle with no damage or issues.<br><br>Designed by Frederick Shirley and made by the Mount Washington Glass Company,<br>this single layer glass achieved a delicate coloration of pink or salmon shading<br>to yellow by the addition of uranium oxide and gold to the original glass batch.<br>This created a yellow opaque glass which on reheating turned to a salmon color<br>shading into the yellow. Further reheating turned the salmon color back to<br>yellow. The uranium in the glass causes the vase to fluoresce brightly when<br>exposed to black light. Burmese glass is highly collected and is also included<br>in all major American Art Glass collections. This glass is rare today as it was<br>very expensive to manufacture and was only made for a short period of time.

c1890 Mt Washington Burmese vase hand painted with rigaree. Absolutely perfect with no damage or restorations whatsoever, amazing piece 3" tall and wide. MT. WASHINGTON AND PAIRPOINT GLASSMt. Washington and its successor, the Pairpoint Corporation, was one of America’s longest-running luxury glass companies (1837-1957), one that rivaled its better known contemporaries, Tiffany and Steuben. It constantly reinvented and re-invigorated its business through creativity in texture, decoration, pattern, and color - developing a variety of styles and decorating techniques which were so technically complex that few are even practiced today.The Mt. Washington Glass Company was founded in South Boston in 1837, and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1870. In 1880, Thomas J. Pairpoint, an English silversmith, was hired to run the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, another company in New Bedford which Mt. Washington’s owners established to produce ornate silver-plated mounts for Mt. Washington glass.In 1894, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company absorbed Mt. Washington, and the company was renamed the Pairpoint Corporation in 1900, which remained the company’s name until it went out of business in 1938. It was revived briefly as the Gundersen-Pairpoint Glass Company but closed permanently in 1957. The company’s most successful years were from 1880 (in the height of the opulent Gilded Age) to 1930 (the end of the exuberant Roaring Twenties).MT. WASHINGTON ART GLASS AND CUT GLASSEnglishman Frederick Shirley was hired in 1872 to run Mt. Washington’s chandelier department, and two years later was put in charge of the entire company. Shirley was entrepreneurial and litigious, quick to adopt new designs and quick to complain if he thought any other firm was copying his wares. By the time he resigned in 1891, he had amassed a total of 27 patents and five design patents for various types of glass, most of which were quite successful.In 1885, Shirley introduced Burmese glass, a translucent glass that shaded from yellow to pink, which was highly decorated in the elegant and sophisticated style characteristic of the day. It became an immediate success on the Art Glass market. Shirley was a good businessman and took advantage of the dawning age of advertising to promote Burmese glass extensively.Mt. Washington’s large decorating shop specialized in enameling. The decorators who worked on Burmese glass also applied their skills to a variety of other decorated glasses with exotic names like Royal Flemish, Crown Milano, Colonial, and Pearl Satin Ware. c1750's Battersea snuff box. 2.75" wide x 1 3/8" tall. Some overall crazing, no restorations. This and a few more Battersea pieces I'm listing have tags indicating they were last purchased at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet in the 1970's.Having already opened an office in New York, in 1964 Sotheby’s bought Parke-Bernet, America’s largest fine art auction house.Battersea boxes developed in the mid 18th century as tiny decorative containers covered with enamel or porcelain and decorated with pleasing designs. Originally the boxes were made of copper covered with white enamel, decorated with classical or scenes or portraits. They evolved over time to become more sentimental. The Battersea box got its name from a firm under the tutelage of Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen, Once Lord Mayor of London at York House in Battersea. The boxes were decorated by transfer printing, which took an impression from an engraved plate painted with enamel and printed on to the box which was then hand painted and fired. The firm existed only from 1753 to 1756 however other firms producing similar boxes, especially those in the village of Bilston, took up this technique. Battersea became the collective name for all such boxes. With advancements in the pottery industry due to the Industrial Revolution, Battersea boxes gradually fell from favour. Allowing small boxes to be produced at less cost than the enameled competitors made Battersea boxes decline significantly by the mid 19th century. They became popular again in the second half of the 20th century with the development of commemorative boxes produced for such well known firms as Tiffany & Co.
