Antique Chinese Bronze Archaistic Mirror. 3.75" wide, solid bronze, from a very<br>nice collection of Chinese Antiques. Appears Excavated, collected in the third<br>quarter of the 20th century. I'm unsure of exact age.<br><br>The Chinese magic mirror (simplified Chinese: 透光镜; traditional Chinese: 透光鏡;<br>pinyin: tòu guāng jìng) traces back to at least the 5th century, although their<br>existence during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 24 AD) has been claimed. The mirrors<br>were made out of solid bronze. The front was polished and could be used as a<br>mirror, while the back has a design cast in the bronze, or other decoration.<br>When sunlight or other bright light shines onto the mirror, the mirror appears<br>to become transparent. If that light is reflected from the mirror onto a wall,<br>the pattern on the back of the mirror is then projected onto the wall.<br><br><br>The back of the same mirror<br>Bronze mirrors were the standard in many Eurasian cultures, for example ancient<br>Rome, but most lacked this characteristic, as did most Chinese bronze mirrors.<br><br>Robert Temple describes their construction: "The basic mirror shape, with the<br>design on the back, was cast flat, and the convexity of the surface produced<br>afterwards by elaborate scraping and scratching. The surface was then polished<br>to become shiny. The stresses set up by these processes caused the thinner parts<br>of the surface to bulge outwards and become more convex than the thicker<br>portions. Finally, a mercury amalgam was laid over the surface; this created<br>further stresses and preferential buckling. The result was that imperfections of<br>the mirror surface matched the patterns on the back, although they were too<br>minute to be seen by the eye. But when the mirror reflected bright sunlight<br>against a wall, with the resultant magnification of the whole image, the effect<br>was to reproduce the patterns as if they were passing through the solid bronze<br>by way of light beams."<br><br>History<br>China<br>In about 800 AD, during the Tang dynasty (618–907), a book entitled Record of<br>Ancient Mirrors described the method of crafting solid bronze mirrors with<br>decorations, written characters, or patterns on the reverse side that could cast<br>these in a reflection on a nearby surface as light struck the front, polished<br>side of the mirror; due to this seemingly transparent effect, they were called<br>"light-penetration mirrors" by the Chinese.<br><br>This Tang era book was lost over the centuries, but magic mirrors were described<br>in the Dream Pool Essays by Shen Kuo (1031–1095), who owned three of them as a<br>family heirloom. Perplexed as to how solid metal could be transparent, Shen<br>guessed that some sort of quenching technique was used to produce tiny wrinkles<br>on the face of the mirror too small to be observed by the eye. Although his<br>explanation of different cooling rates was incorrect, he was right to suggest<br>the surface contained minute variations which the eye could not detect; these<br>mirrors also had no transparent quality at all, as discovered by the British<br>scientist William Bragg in 1932 (after an entire century of their confounding<br>Western scientists). Bragg noted that "Only the magnifying effect of reflection<br>makes them [the designs] plain".<br><br>Japan<br>As the manufacture of mirrors in China increased, it expanded to Korea and<br>Japan. In fact, Emperor Cao Rui and the Wei Kingdom of China gave numerous<br>bronze mirrors (known as Shinju-kyo in Japan) to Queen Himiko of Wa (Japan),<br>where they were received as rare and mysterious objects. They were described as<br>"sources of honesty" as they were said to reflect all good and evil without<br>error. That is why Japan considers a sacred mirror called Yata-no-Kagami to be<br>one of the three great imperial treasures.<br><br>Today, Yamamoto Akihisa is said to be the last manufacturer of magic mirrors in<br>Japan. The Kyoto Journal [6] interviewed the craftsman and he explained a small<br>portion of the technique, that he learned from his father.

Antique Chinese Carved Wood stand with marble insert. High quality piece from the first quarter of the 20th century. 13.25" tall x 12.25" top surface x 15" total width with legs. A nice stand to put a prized plant on, a Buddha, floor vase, something of that sort. I've had this awhile personally and while I love it I just need space as we're having a baby. We are both fairly light and may have used it as a stool once but I wouldn't recommend it. I would limit the weight put on it to 50 pounds or less and preferably put something on it that is somewhat permanent in this world of impermanence. If you weight 200-300 pounds and need a stool, this might not be the best choice. Overall very attractive with a few worn areas, scratches, scuffs, etc. Please look at the pics as it's visible from all sides, this is a fairly heavy stand. It's that that cheap junk that was coming out of Indonesia in the 90's, it's Chinese and about 100 years old.There was a dab of dried mud or on top rim when I took these pics, it came right off.

Ink cakes decorated with mythical creatures,<br>themes from nature, auspicious symbols and calligraphic inscriptions and often<br>embellished with colors and gilding. Antique Chinese silver Trumpet vases on wood stands. Selling the pair 8.5" tall<br>x 3" wide at rim x 260 grams total weight. Stands are original to the vases,<br>both circa last quarter of 19th century, no damage to stands or vases, no bends,<br>dents, no monograms. Amazing pair, each marked under the bases covered by the<br>wood stands.<br><br>I'll follow with more pictures later, this is the best I can do without changing<br>setups.

Antique Chinese Trinket Box collection. Selling the three boxes from the last half of the 19th century. The two heart shaped boxes are really great, each with different overlay figures, each having one bronze bird, they have no significant issues and are 1 7/8" wide, the larger box is 2.5" wide, not quite as good of quality and it has a few dents and the pin for the hinge is broken. Antique Chinese white donkey of Zhang Guolao silver and coral necklace. Antique necklace from the late 19th century, Chinese. Silver content unknown, fantasic piece with no significant issues. As seen in the reference text Four Centuries of Silver by Margaret Duda, p. 88. As per Margaret Duda's research, these donkey amulets should be hung upside down with hooves in the air to represent the white donkey of Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. A symbol of endurance and perseverance. this mythic beast could carry Zhang Guolao one thousand miles without resting.

Antique Chinese Wooden Water Bucket with Puzzle Lid. 11" tall x 10.25" wide at the widest point of the top. Nice solid over 100 year old bucket that will hold water. The Mechanism that holds on the lid is very interesting and precise with the handle being a lever that slides back and forth. tw69

Antique Yixing Zisha Teapot Hand Built Bamboo spout Decoration. 7 3/8" handle to spout x 5.75" tall. Looks to have small amount of applied decoration missing on plum branch after it curves around the handle. No other cracks, chips, or restorations. I know this is an antique, but I'm not 100% sure how to date it. It's estate fresh and was with some 19th century Chinese Ceramics.

Antique Chinese Yixing Zisha Teapot Pewter Mounted Hand Enameled Decoration.<br>Incredible piece untouched mid to late 19th century. It should clean up nicely<br>but it just looked so cool like this I didn't want to mess with it. 6.5" tall x<br>9" wide with spout. I has four very old and very tight short hairlines right on<br>the baserim. It's still structurally sound, still holds water. Antique Chinese Zee Sung Silver Card case. Great item with no significant issues, closes tight, snaps shut with functional catch, no dents. Has a door that swings out and snaps in place, looks like it is made to hold a small photo. The silver behind where the photo would go is damaged as shown but wouldn't affect it's functionality and would be covered by the photo. The inside diameter of the entire case is about 2 1/8" x 1 13/16" It would hold cards or something just smaller than that. outside is 2.5" x 1 7/8" weighs 53.6 grams b3

I honestly have no idea on this pipe<br>other than it's really well made and has an inventory number on the base that<br>looks to have been applied in the mid 20th century. It's estate fresh from a<br>good honest collection of multicultural artifacts, it's tough to say where it<br>came from before that but it was collected long ago. Fantastic rare set that's been together over 100 years. One tumbler has a few<br>tiny flakes on the rim that go down about a millimeter of that, maybe 1/32 of an<br>inch. The rest is perfect with no cracks, chips, or cloudiness. Tumblers are<br>3.75" tall, pitcher is 8.75" tall x 7" wide with handle. Ground pool on pitcher.
