c1910 Japanese Bronze Ikebana Planter 3 Piece Versatile

    1 in magazzino

c1910 Japanese Bronze Ikebana Planter 3 Piece Versatile. This piece is really amazing. It can be put together so many different ways allowing for it to be used in different locations at different heights, then a few pieces can be used alone and the other piece used for something else. I know it was engineered this way even though the 100 year old instructions are long gone. Each way I put it together it fit snugly as if that was it's original intention.. It's wonderful, super heavy solid bronze with top notch casting. When the three pieces are assembled as in the first pic it is 12" tall, the top tray is 11.5" wide, the center round planter with the spikes in it is 3.5" wide inside. There are no scratches or significant blemishes, dents, bends, etc. It's right around 100 years old from the first quarter of the 20th century. B45

  • 1920's Awaji Japanese Deco Art Pottery Vase Tubelined Squeezbag Decoration in th - Estate Fresh Austin

1920's Awaji Japanese Deco Art Pottery Vase Tubelined Squeezbag Decoration in th

    1 in magazzino

1920's Awaji Japanese Deco Art Pottery Vase Tubelined Squeezbag Decoration in the Style of Moorcroft. Very unusual and wonderful piece. Period art deco, signed Made in Japan and the Awahi Kiln Mark. The outlines of the hand painted decoration are Tubelined. 7.5" tall x 7.25" wide at rim. No cracks, chips, or restorations, some expected crazing, but no stains. While the decoration is also Gouda style, this is really next level quality with the tubelined squeezbag and the great matte glaze. In my opinon this would be a Book Cover type example for a few diferent collecting areas, it's fresh to the market for the first time since the internet. Awaji pottery has got its name after the Japanese island at which it was made during a period of about one hundred years, between 1830 and 1939. Most of the pieces we find are made from the mid 1870's when Awaji began to export its products, to the mid to late 1930's when the last of the kilns closed. Earlier wares from the active period of this kiln catered to the Asian taste and could be found imitating Chinese monochromes from the Kangxi period and later. Wares from the turn of the century, the shapes got more inspired by the western art movement such as Art Deco (Jugend) and Art Noveau. Awaji pottery is usually hand thrown. The body is made of high-fired, white or cream colored clay. Footrims can vary from pink or buff to white or grey. The glazes are lead based and often brilliant in tone. They are typically translucent and have a fine crackle. The lead in the glaze gives the colors brilliance and makes the translucent enamels glassy and often iridescent. Most common are the green and yellow Awaji monochromes. The yellow can range from pale lemon to deep amber but also cobalt blue, aubergine, light green, blue, light and dark turquoise, mirror-black, and burdy occurs. Other wares can feature two-tone glazes, three-color glazes that are very similar to Chinese sancai), pieces, with incised decoration (most commonly featuring iris flowers), and applied relief decoration. Also more gaudy examples from the last decade are Flambé and drip glazed wares similar to Japanese Sumida and Chinese Shiwan pottery, or later Jindezheng Jun or transmutation glazes, with generous layers of thick glaze B35

    1 in magazzino

Antique Japanese Black-Lacquer Suzuribako (Writing Box) and Cover, late Meiji or early Taisho Period. Amazing item in original box. Some wear to lacquer but overall clean in good condition. Outer box measures 8.75" x 6". Suzuri-bako (硯箱; "inkstone box") are a type of Japanese writing box. The boxes are traditionally made of lacquered wood and are used to hold writing implements. Historically, the boxes were associated with calligraphy, and as such they were made using high-quality materials designed to safeguard porcelain inkstones (suzuri) from damage. History The first suzuri-bako were developed in 9th-century Japan. At the time, calligraphy was an integral part of Japanese society. In order for a writer to produce a high-quality calligraphy script, a set of precise tools was needed. The most important of these tools was the inkstone, which was required to hold and transfer ink onto a writer's brush. Ink sticks, water droppers, and a small knife were also part of a calligrapher's set. Suzuri-bako were designed to ensure that the various tools a calligrapher needed were properly organized and protected. Due to the insoluble nature of resin-based lacquer, the contents of the writing box were relatively safe from moisture.[3] Inside of the square or rectangular boxes rested a number of different trays and holders, the layout of which differed from period to period.[2] Early boxes were large enough to accommodate both the writer's implements and papers, while later boxes only housed tools. A second type of box, the ryōshibako, were used in later periods to house completed papers. Suzuri-bako became more elaborate as over time. While early period boxes are often decorated with solid red lacquer, more modern boxes are decorated in any number of ways. From the Muromachi period onward, many writing boxes have been decorated with images from Japan's great works of literature. Kōdaiji Temple in Kyoto became associated with a style of Suzuri-bako decoration that featured asymmetrical patterns and autumn grasses. In terms of lacquerware, black, brown, and gold are the most common colors seen in more modern suzuri-bako. During the Edo period many dowries included a suzuri-bako. Advancements in technology and manufacturing processes during the Meiji period resulted in a development of a number of new box shapes and sizes. The craft declined after the wide scale replacement of calligraphy, though the boxes are still produced in small numbers.

Initially a simply-carved button fastener on the cords of an inrō box,
netsuke later developed into ornately sculpted objects of craftsmanship.
Traditionally, Japanese clothing – first the kosode and its later evolution, the
kimono – did not have pockets. Though the sleeves of the kimono could be used to
store small items, the men who wore kimono needed a larger and stronger
container in which to store personal belongings, such as s, , money and seals,
resulting in the development of containers known as sagemono, which were hung by
cords from the robes' sashes (obi). These containers may have been pouches or
small woven baskets, but the most popular were crafted boxes (inrō) held shut by
ojime, sliding beads on cords. Whatever the form of the container, the fastener
which secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle
called a netsuke. Netsuke, like inrō and ojime, evolved over time from being
strictly utilitarian into objects of great artistic merit and an expression of
extraordinary craftsmanship. Netsuke production was most popular during the Edo
period (1603–1867). Netsuke and inrō declined as Japanese clothes were gradually
westernized from the Meiji period (1868–1912).
