Thomas Curtis Navajo Large sterling high grade turquoise belt buckle
Thomas Curtis Navajo Large sterling high grade turquoise belt buckle. Clean condition with no issues. Weight and measurements in pics. The classic Navajo jewelry designs of Thomas (Tom) Curtis reflect his upbringing in a family of talented silversmiths. Both of his grandfathers were silversmiths, and with their encouragement, Thomas Curtis began crafting traditional Navajo jewelry at only 12 years old. Today, his heavy-gauge silver jewelry has become highly prized to collectors who value skillful silverwork with precise hand-tooled details. His deep-rooted respect for his craft earned Thomas Curtis many awards for his Navajo jewelry and impeccable sterling silver boxes. Since his first year at Santa Fe Indian Market in 1984, he won countless ribbons including Best of Division, First, Second, and Third Place awards. Thomas Curtis remembered his grandmother once telling him, “You can make it with your vision, your mind, and your 10 fingers. Everything is right here in your hands." Her inspiration was proven true, as he created all his own die sets (stamping tools) his entire life, which made the patterns on his jewelry uniquely his. Despite his reputation as one of the industrys premier silversmiths, Thomas Curtis lived a traditional life on the Navajo reservation, where he found inspiration for his jewelry by “looking at the ground, the sky, the plants, and the four seasons." He was proud of his days as a champion rodeo rider and felt blessed to have shared his craft with his children and grandchildren. Today, the traditions he learned from his grandparents live strong in Thomas Curtis family. His daughter, Jennifer Curtis, has a following for her exquisite Navajo jewelry and boxes, with skillful silversmithing techniques that have been passed on through generations. He said, "When my kids picked up my work, that was real encouraging to me because it means the traditions are going to go on." Thomas Curtis passed away on June 29, 2013, but his legacy lives on through his timeless handcrafted jewelry.

Harry Morgan Navajo sterling lapis, spiny oyster ranger belt buckle set
Harry Morgan Navajo sterling lapis, spiny oyster ranger belt buckle set. Weight and measurements in pics. Fits a 1" belt. Harry Morgan passed away in the spring of 2008. He was an incredible fifth-generation Navajo silversmith from New Mexico who won many awards for his beautiful jewelry design. He began casting jewelry when he was 7 years old - for 75 cents to a dollar, enough for bubble gum, a soda pop, 5 suckers and a Boston Pie - and became a silversmith at age 12 and professionally as a silver and goldsmith since l965. Harry could do all types of silver work, from sand casting to fabrication. He credited the time he spent watching his mother work for giving him an interest in jewelry. Harry Morgan spent his life in and around Gallup, New Mexico. He won awards at every major Indian art show and there was an exhibit featuring his work at the Heard Museum North the year before he died. After graduating from Gallup High School, Harry received a 4-year scholarship from the Navajo Tribe to study engineering, but school no longer interested him. Being a rodeo cowboy was his next dream. As the popularity of the sport continued, Harry met his certain levels of satisfaction but wanted to experiment with jewelry again. He opened his own silver supply store in Crownpoint, New Mexico and was inspired by his mother to create jewelry in the old pawn style, which he is now famous for. Harry was the nephew of two well- known and popular silversmiths, Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Today, most of their high quality creations are collector items and can be found in many museums. The stamps that Harry used to decorate his work were inherited from his parents and uncles or made by him. Much of his work was made with silver that he rolled himself. He put a satin finish on every piece to give it an antique look. Harry got his ideas for his creations from the natural elements, such as nature, canyons, colors, and the different times of the day. He only used the finest natural turquoise. Harrys remarkable stamp work with wide open spaces is the perfect balance between design and silver. "The boldness of the silver is what‘s beautiful. You don‘t want to over decorate the silver. You want your jewelry to be big and bold."- Harry Morgan Three of his five children, Kelley, Greg and Jacob took up the art form before Harry died. Harry was pleased. As he put it, he told them all to find something they love and stick with it and they all have He was glad that some of them have learned to silversmith. Harry left a legacy of artistic dedication when he passed away from complications from diabetes. Harry Morgan was known and respected as one of the most outstanding Native American jewelers.

Tommy Singer (1940 May 31, 2014) was a Navajo silversmith who specialized in chip-inlay jewelry.[1] He died in a motorcycle accident on May 31, 2014.[citation needed] His inlaid turquoise, coral, and silver pieces incorporated traditional Navajo designs. Singer gained acclaim as the originator of the chip inlay design which he developed in the 1970s. Singer was a member of the Navajo Nation from Winslow, Arizona. He perfected his craft working on the Navajo reservation in a small studio surrounded by his family and other tribal members. He grew up on the Navajo Reservation and was taught silversmithing by his father at the age of seven. In the 1960s he invented the "chip-inlay" technique of using turquoise or coral chips in this silverwork. This technique has become widespread in his community. He also used stamps and work in overlay. When asked about his work, Singer said,"Every piece is made with the various meanings from my traditional ways the Navajo way of living. My father was a silversmith, too. He taught me, and wanted me to continue this trade. It was my father‘s dream that I learn to silversmith so that I could continue his beliefs." After his death, his wife, Rosita (Rose), has continued to create jewelry using designs Singer created prior to his passing. These items are stamped with "T&R Singer.

Lewis Lomay (1913-1996) Hopi Modernist sterling belt buckle with turquoise. Weight and measurements in pics. Wear as shown including some to stone and bezel. Lewis Lomay was born in 1913 on the Hopi Reservation and began his fine arts career during the 30‘s in Albuquerque, NM. He studied painting at the Indian School under Florence Prentiss. His skill and love of painting brought him to Santa Fe where he began to innovate the traditional "flat" style. These innovations did not suit his teachers, so from there he moved on to making jewelry. From this point on in his career, Lomay became one of the best jewelers of his time. He worked and studied with Frank Patania in Santa Fe. He worked in both silver and gold, letting his influences range from traditional to European. His work became known for its innovation, and he is noted for being a designer ahead of his time. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

Allison Snowhawk Lee (1958-2022) Navajo sterling ranger style concho belt
Allison Snowhawk Lee (1958-2022) Navajo sterling ranger style concho belt. Absolutely amazing belt, every concho is solid sterling silver made by famous deceased Navajo silversmith Allison Lee. Measurements in pics. Belt fits a 30" - 33" waist with existing holes. 14 extremely well made conchos, all on a 3/4" belt 432 grams total weight. Allison Lee - Navajo Silversmith: Speaking of the silver and gold jewelry he hand crafts, Allison Lee‘s captivating voice is sincere when he says, "One time my uncle told me that everything we build comes from the earth, like the silver that comes from the earth, or the turquoise that comes from the earth. That is a lot of energy. You put it together and you put your heart and mind into a piece. Then sometimes a certain piece of jewelry- I believe- it is made for a certain person. I usually have a ring, or something, that stays with me for about two or three years, until the right person comes along. And then that person buys that piece. I believe that every piece of jewelry that I make is made for somebody out there- it‘s made for somebody special. Whoever might be having problems, or something like that. In essence, that energy helps that person get help, by wearing pieces that we make. That is the way I look at it." Born in the heart of the Navajo homeland, in the spring of 1958, Allison Snowhawk Lee attended boarding school until 8th grade. Lee is the last name given to him by the boarding school because they couldn‘t pronounce, spell, or translate his Navajo name; Snowhawk is his grandmother‘s name. Allison became involved in silversmithing in a high school art class, making his first simple jewelry pieces at age 12. When he was 14 years old his mother asked him to remove the last stone from an old turquoise brooch and make her a ring with it. Being able to combine old and new into something beautiful gave him a metaphysical sense of bridging generations, connecting him to his heritage and at the same time launching him into a viable vocation. During his high school summers he worked at silver shops in Gallup, New Mexico. His first job included sweeping floors, but as he worked he became acquainted with the top silversmith, and learned his techniques. Each summer thereafter he found a job in different shops, and studied under various masters. Now he is the master who owns a shop that employs high school age apprentices. When Allison graduated from high school in 1977 he won the "Most Artistic" award in his class of 160 students. That was just the beginning of his awards. Allison has won numerous honors in prestigious shows in seven different states. He is not only artistic, but very creative, and therein lies his greatest challenge. "A lot of people copy," he says, "and then pretty soon an original idea is being mass produced. I‘ve got to keep ahead of them." Allison makes many different kinds of jewelry: earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets; and is best known for his elaborate concho belts. "I really like making concho belts," he professes, "and coming up with different styles." Allison uses either silver or, occasionally, 14 karat gold, and sets it with coral, turquoise, or other semi-precious stones. Hand fabricated, his work may be either stamped or contain bezel set stones. His favorite piece was a squash blossom necklace he made using tools he created. Allison goes on the road two or three times a month, for two or three days at a time, to market his work or attend shows. He also does demonstrations and seminars at Grand Canyon and other places. When he is at work in his shop he may put in up to 16 hours a day. "I take breaks sometimes," he confesses, "Sometimes I get burned out. That‘s the time to just walk away from it. That‘s when it‘s time to go outdoors, just to kind of refresh my mind. "I go hunting, I go hiking. What I really love to do is go to old Indian ruins and just look around, see what I can find. In a way I get ideas from the old, and then try to come up with something new. Then I get back into it. Everything just starts coming together once I start making something. It just comes together in my mind." Allison is considered a success by all who are familiar with his work, but he has a different standard, set with his three sons in mind: "I think being successful is keeping everything balanced out between your family and your work. I think that‘s what being successful is, caring enough to spend time with your family, and not letting the work and the career overtake your life. I‘ve seen a lot of people that have done that. I‘m just glad that I‘ve had people there to tell me the difference. Successful to me is just being happy and making sure my family is fed and clothed. That says it all, right there."
