Fred Thompson (1921–2002) was a Navajo silversmith with one of the longer documented careers in the corpus — active 1936 to the 1990s, working traditional and multiple styles: jewelry, collar tabs and boxes; cast work, stamp work, heavy pieces, channel and chip inlay, turquoise and coral stone-sets. He made his own stamps.He was the silversmith for Tobe Turpen's Indian Trading Company beginning in 1936, perhaps also Borrego Pass Trading Post, and operated his own shop in Church Rock, New Mexico. Per the corpus he may have collaborated with Leekya Deyuse. A note on the name: our scan prints it split as 'Fred Thomp son'; the mark FRED THOMPSON fixes the spelling. He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

His hallmark is a strong raincloud.Although he has produced some jewelry with coral and turquoise, more in the style of Navajo work, Hoyungowa is a master silversmith which is evident in his traditional Hopi silver overlay technique jewelry. Hoyungowa actually learned silver overlay technique from Preston Monongye (his uncle and another famous Hopi artisan) and the Institute Of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.More History: The Indian Arts and Crafts Board (a government department) and the Hopi Tribe collaborated on the formation of the Hopi Silvercraft Guild in 1949 and noted Hopi artist Fred Kabotie became the manager. It was then that Hopi overlay jewelry found it acceptance.Hopi overlay technique involves cutting out the desired design in one piece of silver and overlaying that onto another piece that has been incised and oxidized. Polishing is accomplished with steel wool which results in a matte rather than a shiny surface.

Wilson comes from a family of silversmiths. His grandfather was Bedoni and he is the brother of Thomas Jim. He has received numerous awards for his work and is highly acclaimed for his detail in every piece he creates. Rocking Horse Ranch in Arizona (owned by Lani Mastrangel and Kevin Randall) was a renowned producer of high-quality Navajo silver jewelry from the 1970s onwards. It served as a workshop for master Navajo silversmiths like Edison Smith, Fidel Bahe, and Thomas Curtis, revitalizing early 1900s design techniques.

Leonard Nez Born in Keams Canon, Arizona, Nez met his wife Marian through his sister. It was Marian, a silversmith in her own right, who first taught Nez jewelry-making. In 1977, he made his first pieces and by1993 he began showing his work. He is consistently the recipient of awards and his work can be found in private collections, which include a silver bowl at the Smithsonian. An avid horseman and highly skilled team roper, he divides his time between his silver work and the rodeo circuit. Fine chisel, stamp work and deeply grooved silver overlay are the hallmarks of Navajo Leonard Nez’s silver jewelry whose work is featured in the Smithsonian Institute. By combining the elements of the traditional with the contemporary in detailed scrollwork and classic feather styling, Nez’s work is distinct and recognizable. He attributes his inspiration to God and says that sometimes design ideas come to him while he is in church.

Roger Skeet Famed Navajo silversmith Roger Skeet Sr. made literally thousands of pieces for C.G. Wallace‘s trading post during his career. He is known for his excellent stamp work and innovative silversmithing. Roger Skeet Jr. ( b. 1932) succeeded his father as an excellent silversmith. He learned and worked with his father until his death in 1959. His work is hallmarked "R.S." while his father‘s work remains plain. Otherwise, their styles are extremely similar and nearly indistinguishable. Their concho belts remain as an example of their excellent work.

Diné silversmith Ike Wilson worked for many years for the Kelsey Trading Company at Zuni. He did silverwork for many of the Zuni lapidary artists including Ida Vacit Poblano. He often collaborated with his wife, Katherine Wilson. Navajo Nation artist Ike Wilson (1900-1942) would sign his creations with his bow and arrow hallmark. There has been some confusion in the past about the hallmark of Ike Wilson (1901-1942). It seems that sometimes his work was attributed to Austin Wilson. Both men were born in the same year and in a similar area of the reservation and both men worked at times for trader C. G. Wallace and the Kelsey Trading Company. Ike Wilsons work is signed with a bow and arrow. After his death in 1942, his wife Katherine Wilson (1907-1985) continued to use his hallmark. The bow and arrow hallmark was initially attributed to Ikes contemporary, Austin Wilson, but the corrected attribution was published in Messier, 2014.

Navajo silversmith Albert Platero was born on the Navajo reservation in To‘hajiilee, New Mexico, thirty miles west Of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has been creating outstanding classic silver work since the rise of its popularity in the 1970‘s. "Platero" means "silversmith" in Spanish, so it perhaps makes sense that the Platero family has so many talented silver smiths in it. Albert is the uncle of Vincent Platero, another outstanding silversmith.

Cippy Crazy Horse Born Cipriano Quintana to renowned jewelers Terecita and Joe H. Quintana, Cippy CrazyHorse has carried on the classic traditional Pueblo design his parents started. To these classic designs, CrazyHorse brings his personal style. The bold, deep stamp and chisel designs on thick gauge silver are his trademark. Much of the thick gauge silver comes from melting scrap silver into ingots – a process the “old timers” incorporated. CrazyHorse says of his work, “There are traditional classic styles in silver jewelry, the Navajo and the Pueblo , and I do the latter; from cuff bracelets to concho belts, ranger set buckles and bead necklaces.” Following high school, CrazyHorse attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales for two and a half years and then served in the US Navy until 1972. Upon returning home to Cochiti, CrazyHorse worked as an electrician’s assistant on the construction of Cochiti Dam, but an injury in 1974 curtailed that line of work. According to CrazyHorse, the injury “forced his hand at silversmithing.” He started with the smaller tasks of making silver chains and gradually taught himself the old style of silversmithing. With much support and encouragement from his father and his wife, Susan, his silversmithing began earnestly. CrazyHorse has received much recognition for his work, having garnered his share of ribbons at the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts Indian Market in Santa Fe over the course of the past 35 years. He is considered a “Master Silversmith” and his work is numerous collections and books on Native American jewelry. In the August, 2008 issue of The Santa Fean, Cippy was featured as one of “Seven Standouts” of Indian Market. He has been featured in many other newspaper and magazine articles over the years, and in several museum and private exhibitions throughout the country. His work is highly sought after in Japan , where his classic designs are admired as well as his dedication to a traditional lifestyle at Cochiti Pueblo. Cippy and his work are featured in the “Artists – Handmade” section of the April 2011 issue of the Japanese (American Western Culture) magazine, “Free and Easy”. Cippy has also been a Jewelry Judge at SWAIA Indian Market a number of times, where his unique sense of humor certainly enlivens the proceedings.

ROBERT JOHNSON Navajo silversmith Robert Johnson was born in Gallup, NM, raised in Pindale NM and graduated from Gallup High School in 1986. He started his career as a silversmith at the age of 14 as a buffer for his parent’s handmade sterling silver beads. Robert met the late silversmith, Kirk Smith, known for his unique styles of antique finish repousse stamp work, during the summer of 1986. Kirk became a mentor for Robert and taught him the art of creating jewelry – traditional Navajo stamping with an antique finish, at times high polished pieces all of which started from bracelets, earrings, concho belts, rings, squash blossoms, hair tie’s and so forth. It was an exciting time of in his life – learning a new trade and being able to support his family. Robert has enjoyed his work as a silversmith and has developed his own unique styles of Navajo Jewelry. Creating jewelry is his passion. 42.5" Bernard Dawahoya Hopi overlay man in the maze sterling silver concho belt. Tested and guaranteed sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures. Hopi artist Bernard Dawahoya was considered by all to be a master silversmith. His bold and clean designs along with the precise matting or texture he worked into the negative areas of this pieces, made his work easily recognizable. His Hopi name was Masaqueva (Wings of the sun). He was born in the second Mesa village of Shungopavi. Not only a master jeweler, but a respected storyteller and a man of great talents. He passed away in 2010. His work is displayed in Museums across the country and in many publications.

Marked as shown, high quality workmanship from the last quarter of the 20th century in immaculate possibly unworn condition. Manuel Hoyungowa (ca. 19532011) Hopi Tribe Manuel Hoyungowa is from the village of Hotevilla on Third Mesa and has been an active silversmith at Hopi Pueblo since the 1970s. His hallmark is a strong raincloud. Although he has produced some jewelry with coral and turquoise, more in the style of Navajo work, Hoyungowa is a master silversmith which is evident in his traditional Hopi silver overlay technique jewelry. Hoyungowa actually learned silver overlay technique from Preston Monongye (his uncle and another famous Hopi artisan) and the Institute Of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Tom Dewitt First Phase Style Ingot coin silver Concho Belt Deep stamped sterling. Almost three pounds of Solid Ingot (coin) 90% silver (tested) with weight and measurements in pictures.. 42" long (existing belt holes at 33"-41"), other measurements in pictures. 1 Buckle and 8 conchos, 9 total, each marked with Tom Dewitt‘s early hallmark. I was told this was purchased in the 1970‘s for 6k. I didn‘t really know what to think about that until I saw this in person. Now I believe it, they may have the timing off, maybe not. There are not but a few Southwestern silversmiths capable of executing something like this today and they would charge well over 10k for something this heavy and well executed. A lot of time, skill, and materials went into this belt. Tom Dewitt (American, b.1947-2021) Anglo Santa Fe artist Tom Dewitt is known for creating “old style silver pieces. He is inspired by silverwork from the 1880s-1940s. Toms work regularly is mistaken for being much older than it is. Tom has been creating retro-style jewelry for over four decades and his work is represented in galleries around the country. THOMAS DEWITT OBITUARY THOMAS O‘DELL DEWITT Thomas O‘Dell DeWitt known as Dewey, passed away at home in Santa Fe on June 10 after a hard battle with cancer. His son Matthew DeWitt had been by his side for 24 days. Tom was known for the beautiful silver jewelry and art that he made, the "gift of gab," original one-liners, his generosity, loving nature, and his positive attitude from his Christian Science upbringing. Tom was born in Michigan and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Venice High in 1965. He began his silver- smith career directly after school while also working as a lighting technician for major venues in L.A. during the wave of the 1960‘s psychedelic rock & roll concerts. He eventually landed a job with Fox Studios working as an electrician for long-running TV series‘ such as M.A.S.H., Dragnet, The Love Boat, and others. He also worked on some big films; The Doors, Lonesome Dove, Natural Born Killers, The Missing, and others. He made frequent trips to Santa Fe starting when he was 21 to buy and sell jewelry, trade and pick up tools. He made New Mexico his home in the 1970s settling in Pojoaque as a silversmith also returning to L.A. for work in the movie and TV business. He was one of the original "Anglo Silversmiths" in New Mexico and a trader. He called his jewelry "old pawn while you wait" because it looked like the old Native American jewelry found in pawn shops. He had a special relationship with the Zuni Pueblo and revered the culture and artistic styles of the Native American silversmiths and artisans. He sold to major galleries in Santa Fe and had a line with Ralph Lauren in the early 2000s. He was extremely talented and people from all over the world collected his work. Tom was a silversmith for 52 years making over 20,000 pieces of southwestern and cowboy style jewelry and art. He met and married his second wife Frances Sayre in Pecos in 1994 and had a son, Matthew DeWitt. He also took under his wing, Frances‘ son, William McLean. Although the marriage did not last they continued to raise the boys together and remain friends. Tom is survived by his son Matthew DeWitt of Santa Fe, stepson William McLean of Medford, OR, and niece Laurie DeWitt of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his mother Virginia DeWitt, CSP and his father Edgar Beverly DeWitt.

30" c1950‘s Allen Kee (1916-1972) Navajo for White Hogan Shop Modernist sterling concho belt. 30" long where it hooks, appears to have been shortened hence the solder on the end loop. 1.5" wide buckle, 1 1/6" wide conchos. 150.7 grams. Navajo Allen Kee created during his time as a benchsmith at the White Hogan Shop in Scottsdale, Arizona from 1946 to 1962, working beside Kenneth Begay. White Hogan Shops silver jewelry. Lead by mentors, such as Kenneth Begay and the Kee brothers, jewelers working at the White Hogan produced an amazing array of modern designs in jewelry and flatware. Allen Kee worked at the White Hogan during the early years. He was a experienced silversmith that created the desired designs of the White Hogans style of jewelry. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what it‘s marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. 44" Sarah Grey Navajo Stamped Sterling Silver Dollars concho belt. Huge and heavy belt that fits up to a 44" waist but can be hooked at different places or conchos could even be removed, or it could be a necklace that doubles up. The whole thing is over 90% silver, sterling conchos with 90% silver real American Currency silver dollars. 10 Conchos total including the buckle, each measuring 3.5" x 2.5" x 751 grams.
