• Julian Lovato (1922-2018) Kewa Sterling Mediterranean coral concho belt

Julian Lovato (1922-2018) Kewa Sterling Mediterranean coral concho belt

    1 in magazzino

Julian Lovato (1922-2018) Kewa Sterling Mediterranean coral concho belt 2.75" x 2" buckle, (9) 2.5" x 1 5/8" conchos. No isssues, I'll follow up with length and weight.Since 1948, the Southwest has offered the world distinctive and unusual jewelry of Julian Lovato. His work has the individual stamp of a creative craftsman, yet the tradition of the Native American Southwest is evident. Lovato express his own sophisticated modern designs in handmade sterling silver and gold jewelry and objects of art. Coral and turquoise are the traditional gemstones of the Southwestern Indian, "the most valuable thing to possess, something to treasure, the way people want to have a diamond no matter what price," Lovato explains. He designs each piece of jewelry around the stone, selecting the finest turquoise and coral available.Lovato's love of turquoise goes back to his childhood: Santo Domingo Pueblo is renown for turquoise bead making and silversmithing. His father and grandfather both worked with turquoise. Upon his father's death, Lovato got a job at age thirteen cutting stones at Maisels in Albuquerque. Later, he spent several years with a similar operation in Kansas City. Then in 1948 he had the great fortune of becoming apprentice to the internationally distinguished Italian silversmith, Frank Patania.Patania came to Santa Fe in 1924. He brought with his a new sense of design elegance to Southwestern jewelry. During his years at Patinia's Thunderbird Shop in Santa Fe, Lovato was responsible for the silver monogram that became the Thunderbird specialty: contemporary buckles, cufflinks, brooches and rings. Patania and Lovato also made sterling silver pitchers, bowls, teapots and trays.Whereas most traditional Native American jewelry is flatwork, either stamped or overlay, Lovato has adopted the techniques and design elements learned from Patania into what he calls a raised or dimensional jewelry design. Lovato's bracelets curve not only along it's length, but also softly across the width. The bezels hold the stones elevated from the surface, so that the turquoise or coral stones appear to float above the surface. The effect of suspension contrasts with the second characteristic of Lovato's style- a deliberate look of weight in the metalwork. Lovato uses substantial sheets of sterling silver and gold, giving an importance to the metal work. However, the exquisite balance and craftsmanship belie the weight of the metal.Julian Lovato combines tradition and innovation, and the permanence of metal and stone with the elusive grace and beauty of design in works of art which will endure. "I have strong feelings about the things I do. I'd like to leave something behind someday when I am gone. Something that people can remember me by, something that is worthwhile. I'd like somebody to think of me as a silversmith whose work can be treasured. I think my work can speak for itself."All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) silver, turquoise and branch coral bolo tie 38" long 2 5/8" x 3" slide. 70.4 grams, no issues, unmarked. 50's-60's.Dan Simplicio Sr.(1917-1969) is one of the most collected & one of the most innovative Zuni artisans from decades ago.In a way,you can say he is similar to Charles Loloma in how he brought new ideas to what was considered 'common' to Native American jewelry..Ideas that just weren't happening before & changed how things were being done,as well as introducing new materials into Native American jewelry. It is said that back in the 30's,he was one of the 1st Native American artists to work in gold, which doesn't in the least, surprize me!In Dan's later years,it was he who was the 1st to incorporate using whole pieces of branch coral in it's natural form & also introduced leaf work into Zuni jewelry. His leaf work was fluid in design & how at times he would beautifully wrap these so elegantly around the coral..The leaves themselves were like pieces of art,all on their own.He collaborated with who are now some of the most sought out names, when it comes to 'Masters" of Zuni jewelry..Artists like the famed Leo Poblano,LeekyaDeyuse, Teddie Weahkee,Bernard Homer and Lee Edaakie.Early in his career,he was employed by C.G.Wallace at his Zuni trading post, where he did a lot of grinding work & set stones for the company.. Wallace collected some of Dan's finest work and when his collection was auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1975, it included more than 50 pieces by Simplicio. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Alvin and Lula Begay Navajo silver and coral earrings. In 1956, Alvin and Lula Begay were both born into artistic families in Winslow, Arizona. They have worked as a silversmithing team since 1991, each serving their own role; Alvin works on the overall composition and construction of the piece, while Lula works on the setting/cutting of the stones as well as the polishing and final touches. The dynamic pair is known to not use any pre-made findings, everything outside of earring posts are handcrafted. Alvin is especially known for using his techniques of double and triple overlay, reversible necklaces, shadowboxes, and engraving--often all on the same piece!

While still very adept in the art of jewelry-making, Alvin’s first love is bareback riding in rodeos. He grew up in a traditional Navajo life style on the reservation and is a natural athlete and cowboy. He has competed for 10 years, winning championships in 1987 and 1989. Although Alvin is a very humble and unassuming individual, he is one on AIRCA’s top award winners. Awards in jewelry-making are also no stranger to Alvin; among several awards, he has won first with a necklace in a competition in Dallas, Texas.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics.
