Calvin began making jewelry when he started working for the Yellowhorse Trading Post in Lupton, Arizona. He began working on his own in 2004. He is known for his patterns in inlay and micro-inlay. Calvin creates inlay scenes from what he knows: Life on the Navajo Reservation. Only the finest materials are used in his one of a kind jewelry.“I have lots of drawings. So I will take pieces from my drawings and sketch what I am going to make. The sketch will be the size of the piece so next I will make the silver. After that I get the stones I am going to use and start to cut them down, using a mini-blade. That is the process until I get the shape I want. “I worked at Yellowhorse Trading for three months, and that is when Alvin Yellowhorse asked me to come work for him. I would do more difficult inlay and after I worked for him I went out on my own, that was about 2004.”

He worked with Barry Wilson on wooden panels for the Vancouver Indian Centre. In the early 80s, Kelvin worked with Derek Wilson carving silver and gold jewelry and he apprenticed under Henry Robertson working on totem poles and panels, which are on display at the Vancouver Indian Centre. Kelvin is of Saulteaux decent, but he grew up with the influence of west coast people. Henry Robertson, Barry Wilson and Derek Wilson are of the Henaaksala people, a branch of the Haisla nation. Kelvin was adopted into this family. Kelvin’s designs whether in gold, silver, ivory or wood reflect his attention to detail and superb craftsmanship. He is very aware of his native culture and hopes that through his artwork he is able to help preserve and pass on the Northwest coast native culture.

He began his career in jewelry in the 1930's and learned silversmithing at Santa Fe Indian School under renowned artist Ambrose Roanhorse. Lewis then went to work for jeweler Frank Patania in Santa Fe NM for 13 years. His designs were both traditional Hopi with a touch of European influence combining his time as an apprentice under both Ambrose and Frank.

They began making jewelry together in 1953, the year they were married. Robert and Bernice share their RLB stamp.
