Sz9 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo Sterling Multi-stone inlay ring.   Fantastic ring c1970's with no issues. Solid sterling silver, weight and measurements in pics.Benny Armijo (1937-2022).   Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones.  His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70's until the late 20th century..   His older mark from the 1970's looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I'm 100% sure this is Benny Armijo's work and hallmark, it's been confirmed by his living relatives.   Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr  The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.

Vintage 32" Silver Navajo pearl heishi necklace or double choker. These are very nice hand stamped beads, nice old ones circa mid 20th century, perhaps older. My guess is this necklace was made later than the beads. It has a hook on each side so it can be worn at 32" or as a choker where the smallest is approximately 15" and the other is 17". LISTER (Navajo) The Lister family, with Alice Lister and David Lister at the helm, are one of the most highly regarded families of Navajo jewelry makers working today; their renowned pieces in turquoise and sterling silver represent meticulous traditional methods and both traditional and contemporary designs. Living on the vast Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, David Lister and Alice Lister, both silversmiths, have practiced their artistry together for thirty-five years, passing their craft on to four of their daughters, including their youngest, Davida Lister, who lives and works with them and Dee Nez, who lives across the street and also works alongside her parents in the same workshop. Allison Lee - Navajo Sterling and turquoise pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Allison "Snowhawk" Lee (1958 - 2022) was an award-winning artist from Mexican Springs, New Mexico. He was a full-blooded Navajo and is the third oldest of eight (four brothers and three sisters). Allison lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his three sons, Wyatt, Kyle and Trent. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with his family. When there was a boom in Indian Jewelry in the early seventies, Allisons mother and uncle started making Squash Blossoms. At the young age of 14, Allison was asked by his mother to make a silver ring with a Turquoise stone. He made the ring well and so began his interest in jewelry making. Allison began competing in juried art shows back in 1988 and continues this tradition of competition throughout his life. He received many top awards, such as: Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the George C. West Memorial Award for Excellence in Silver Jewelry (which he has won three years in a row), and at Indian Market in Santa Fe, NM. Allison was asked to join in on making a piece for the millennium sampler concha belt along with twelve renowned Indian Market jewelers. He was very honored to be chosen to participate in this collaboration. The proceeds of this auction benefited the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA). Beginning in 1931, The United Indian Trader’s Association (UITA), a volunteer organization of leading Southwestern Indian traders, created and enforced a strict set of quality standards for the making and selling of Navajo and Pueblo jewelry in the trading posts of its various members. UITA’s distinctive hallmark of its initials UITA with an arrowhead in the middle followed by the numeric designation of the particular trading company it was made at or for was a guarantee of the highest quality Native jewelry; completely handmade using solely traditional methods of craftsmanship and use of only the finest, traditional materials. Since the UITA traders were the most important “Who’s-who” of their day they were well-equipped to set and enforce such high standards and as a result, the finest jewelry pieces made under UITA’s auspices are some of the very finest Navajo and Pueblo pieces of the 20th Century. "The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts." “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb." Don Smouse was the chief Judge for silversmithing for the Navajo Nation for a time and dealt with the highest quality turquoise from around the world. The Trading Post was Borrego Pass Trading Post along the continental divide just south and west of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Smouse's were old time traders and at one point were the oldest living traders in the USA and were on the national news during the 90's for still trading the old way. Historic Battle Mtn. Blue Gem Turquoise The Blue Gem Turquoise Mine was located in the Copper Basin area southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. Production of this turquoise mine started about 1934 and continued until the 1970's. Blue Gem Turquoise is still some of the finest turquoise ever found, and unlike most turquoise mines, (in which the majority mined is chalky and only usable if stabilized) most of the turquoise found there was of gem-quality. There is a distinctive aqua color that some people associate with Blue Gem turquoise, although it produced a great variety of colors, especially when intense blue was combined with deep green in one stone.The mine no longer exists due to the extensive copper (and gold) mining operations of the Copper Canyon Mining Company (all of the copper was extracted by 1968). Doc Wilson, one of the previous owners of the Lone Mountain Turquoise Mine, owned the Blue Gem Turquoise Mine from 1938 - 1981 when he leased it to Lee Hand. Lee Hand owned and operated the mine until 1970 when he sold his interest to the Elquist family of Battle Mountain, Nevada.Lee Hand knew the Patania Family in Arizona and C.G.Wallace in Zuni and regularly supplied those traders with turquoise for Navajo and Zuni carvings and jewelry. While the Blue Gem Turquoise mine was very prolific at one time, today it is considered extremely rare, valuable and collectible turquoise. Most of the "finished" Blue Gem turquoise today is in private collections and museums, rarely offered for sale.The Blue Gem Turquoise mine was located deep underground, accessed by tunnels as deep as 800 feet. This is of interest because the Blue Gem Turquoise Mine and the Bisbee Turquoise Mine in Bisbee, Arizona are the only two Turquoise mines (that we know of) where turquoise was found that deep in the earth. One of the rarest forms to see in Blue Gem TurquoiseJewelry is the Pyrite Variety. sz8.5 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo silver modernist corn row ring. No significant issues, measurements in pics. The marks on the rim are part of the casting, it was made to look "weathered". Benny Armijo (1937-2022).   Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones.  His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70's until the late 20th century..   His older mark from the 1970's looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I'm 100% sure this is Benny Armijo's work and hallmark, it's been confirmed by his living relatives.   Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr  The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands. Once center stone has been glued back in with slight loss. Kee Joe won the amazing Arizona Living Treasure award which is unique as it is only given to one recipient per year. Kee Joe is a very famous artist and his pieces are highly collectible.

Solid sterling silver with copper basket ring.After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941. The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession, lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the artist.Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. His designs often incorporated animal figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs.In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.Marked or unmarked as shown in the pics.
