Ernest Thomas Bilagody Navajo silversmith Ernest Thomas Bilagody (ETB) was born in Tuba City, Arizona to the Red House Big Water Clan and has been immersed in his trade for the better part of his life. His grandparents are from the Around the House Clan and the Bitter Water Clan. This craftsman was guided by his mother early on and continued those traditions into his adult years. He worked as a silversmith for over 35 years, since the mid 1970s, until his passing in 2014. His mother started him out with buffing the earrings she made. sz8 Benny Armijo Navajo Modernist silver Sugilite, Coral, turquoise ring. Has the artists CM hallmark, somehow the photographer missed it, I‘ll try to follow up with a pic of the mark. No issues, weight and measurements in pics Benny Armijo (1937-2022).   Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones.  His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70's until the late 20th century..   His older mark from the 1970's looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I'm 100% sure this is Benny Armijo's work and hallmark, it's been confirmed by his living relatives.   Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr  The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.  Women's Size 8 Ring.

Alvin Yellowhorse Navajo sterling sugilite, turquoise cobblestone turtle pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Just a few miles west of Gallup, NM., nestled among the canyons & hills of the small town of Lupton, AZ., lies the quaint, cozy workshop of the young Navajo artist, Alvin Yellowhorse. Alvin learned the silversmithing trade at an early age from his father, Frank Yellowhorse, and later mastered the techniques of cutting the small turquoise & other colorful stones into precise little pieces in which he assembles into intricate designs inspired by his Anasazi ancestors. This technique is called “Channel Inlay. A style of inlay where all the stones are cut & assembled together first & then ground flush before being highly polished. Alvin is credited for originating another style of inlay called “Corn Row Wave Inlay in which the stones are individually cut & rounded over before setting them into a silver or gold bracelet, pendant, ring, or link bracelet. Corn Row Wave Inlay is much more time consuming as he has to completely finish each stone one at a time before placing them into the gold or silver setting. Alvin creates each piece one at a time . There are no mass production techniques or assembly lines. His designs, although very contemporary, are enriched by the Zuni, Hopi, & Anasazi influences along with his own Navajo heritage. Alvin also receives inspiration from the ancient petroglyphs found along the canyon walls near his workshop. Alvin is forever amazing the jewelry & art galleries with new designs & techniques. Kenneth Begay Navajo White Hogan Modernist Sterling salt spoons/ironwood bowl. Selling the three Kenneth Begay salt spoons and Ironwood salt bowl shown. No issues. Weight and measurements in pics. Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) was called the “Father of Contemporary Navajo jewelry for his clean, bold, modern designs. Begay began as a blacksmith, took his first course in silversmithing from Fred Peshlakai at the Fort Wingate Vocational School for the Native Americans in Fort Wingate, New Mexico in 1938. Fred Peshlakai had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught traditional techniques of silversmithing to his own students from 1968-1973 at Navajo Community College in Many Farms, Arizona. In 1946, Begay started working with John Bonnell at the White Hogan shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, beginning an 18 year relationship. In collaboration with Bonnell, Begay moved Indian jewelry beyond personal adornment and into the arena of pure metalsmithing making, amongst other things, flatware sets, plates, boxes, and vessels of various kinds. Although highly unusual at this time among silversmiths, 1951-1952, he also began signing his jewelry using KB. When working for the White Hogan he additionally stamped his pieces with a small hogan. A master metalsmith, Kenneth Begay was very creative and strongly influenced by his traditional background. In his jewelry this translated to a balance between silver, stone and bold but unpretentious designs. He created clean, elegant designs based on streamlined shapes that were repeated to form balanced and harmonious patterns, a style that has been compared to Navajo weaving. The son of a Zuni jeweler, Jacob Haloo, and a Navajo mother, Lolap Haloo, Jake Livingston was born in Pinehaven, NM in 1946. After returning from Vietnam in the early 1970s, where he received three *Purple Heart medals, Livingston first worked as a Navajo tribal policeman. He studied the Zuni style of mosaic inlay with master craftsman Dennis Edaakie and soon began working full time as a jeweler. He has been creating prize winning works of wearable art ever since. Frequently working with his wife Irene, he is the recipient of First Place and Best of Division awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market multiple times and his work is found in Lois Jackas book Navajo Jewelry: A Legacy of Silver and Stone. The exquisite work on this classic reversible pendant features a coral cardinal on one side and a gorgeous red headed bird on the other. Livingston used the stones as a painter would use paint to fashion his images. The cardinal is perched on a branch that is comprised of miniscule segments of jet along with coral and turquoise blossoms that he etched to achieve additional contour. Weight and measurements in pics. Roger Skeet, Jr. was born December 7, 1933 in Vanderwagon, New Mexico. Roger, Jr. learned his silversmith skills from his father, Roger Skeet, Sr. He was the oldest of eight children and chosen by his father to stay home to help his father with his silver work. Therefore, he never had the traditional education his siblings had. His apprenticeship began at the age of eight and he worked with his father until his death in 1959. He once said, “I would like to have gone to school and served my people on the Tribal Council. Roger Skeets Jr. still uses some of the same stamps of his fathers in his work today, a wonderful piece of Navajo silver history. He became known for his stamp work on concho belts. He has made thousands of these belts, a tradition started by his father, Roger Skeet Sr., who was one of C.G. Wallaces frequently used smiths. He began using the hallmark RS in about 1950. Sz9 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo Sterling Multi-stone inlay ring.   Fantastic ring c1970's with no issues. Solid sterling silver, weight and measurements in pics.Benny Armijo (1937-2022).   Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones.  His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70's until the late 20th century..   His older mark from the 1970's looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I'm 100% sure this is Benny Armijo's work and hallmark, it's been confirmed by his living relatives.   Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr  The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.

My guess is this necklace was made later than the beads. It has a hook on each side so it can be worn at 32" or as a choker where the smallest is approximately 15" and the other is 17". LISTER (Navajo) The Lister family, with Alice Lister and David Lister at the helm, are one of the most highly regarded families of Navajo jewelry makers working today; their renowned pieces in turquoise and sterling silver represent meticulous traditional methods and both traditional and contemporary designs. Living on the vast Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, David Lister and Alice Lister, both silversmiths, have practiced their artistry together for thirty-five years, passing their craft on to four of their daughters, including their youngest, Davida Lister, who lives and works with them and Dee Nez, who lives across the street and also works alongside her parents in the same workshop. Allison Lee - Navajo Sterling and turquoise pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Allison "Snowhawk" Lee (1958 - 2022) was an award-winning artist from Mexican Springs, New Mexico. He was a full-blooded Navajo and is the third oldest of eight (four brothers and three sisters). Allison lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his three sons, Wyatt, Kyle and Trent. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with his family. When there was a boom in Indian Jewelry in the early seventies, Allisons mother and uncle started making Squash Blossoms. At the young age of 14, Allison was asked by his mother to make a silver ring with a Turquoise stone. He made the ring well and so began his interest in jewelry making. Allison graduated from Tohatchi High School, during the summers he worked at various silver shops in the Gallup area, where he perfected the methods of silversmithing from the top silversmiths in the shops. Allison began competing in juried art shows back in 1988 and continues this tradition of competition throughout his life. He received many top awards, such as: Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the George C. West Memorial Award for Excellence in Silver Jewelry (which he has won three years in a row), and at Indian Market in Santa Fe, NM. Allison was asked to join in on making a piece for the millennium sampler concha belt along with twelve renowned Indian Market jewelers. He was very honored to be chosen to participate in this collaboration. The proceeds of this auction benefited the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA).
