That is a lot of energy. You put it together and you put your heart and mind into a piece. Then sometimes a certain piece of jewelry- I believe- it is made for a certain person. I usually have a ring, or something, that stays with me for about two or three years, until the right person comes along. And then that person buys that piece. I believe that every piece of jewelry that I make is made for somebody out there- it's made for somebody special. Whoever might be having problems, or something like that. In essence, that energy helps that person get help, by wearing pieces that we make. That is the way I look at it."Born in the heart of the Navajo homeland, in the spring of 1958, Allison Snowhawk Lee attended boarding school until 8th grade. Lee is the last name given to him by the boarding school because they couldn't pronounce, spell, or translate his Navajo name; Snowhawk is his grandmother's name.Allison became involved in silversmithing in a high school art class, making his first simple jewelry pieces at age 12. When he was 14 years old his mother asked him to remove the last stone from an old turquoise brooch and make her a ring with it. Being able to combine old and new into something beautiful gave him a metaphysical sense of bridging generations, connecting him to his heritage and at the same time launching him into a viable vocation.During his high school summers he worked at silver shops in Gallup, New Mexico. His first job included sweeping floors, but as he worked he became acquainted with the top silversmith, and learned his techniques. Each summer thereafter he found a job in different shops, and studied under various masters. Now he is the master who owns a shop that employs high school age apprentices.When Allison graduated from high school in 1977 he won the "Most Artistic" award in his class of 160 students. That was just the beginning of his awards. Allison has won numerous honors in prestigious shows in seven different states. He is not only artistic, but very creative, and therein lies his greatest challenge. "A lot of people copy," he says, "and then pretty soon an original idea is being mass produced. I've got to keep ahead of them."Allison makes many different kinds of jewelry: earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets; and is best known for his elaborate concho belts. "I really like making concho belts," he professes, "and coming up with different styles."Allison uses either silver or, occasionally, 14 karat gold, and sets it with coral, turquoise, or other semi-precious stones. Hand fabricated, his work may be either stamped or contain bezel set stones. His favorite piece was a squash blossom necklace he made using tools he created.Allison goes on the road two or three times a month, for two or three days at a time, to market his work or attend shows. He also does demonstrations and seminars at Grand Canyon and other places. When he is at work in his shop he may put in up to 16 hours a day. "I take breaks sometimes," he confesses, "Sometimes I get burned out. That's the time to just walk away from it. That's when it's time to go outdoors, just to kind of refresh my mind."I go hunting, I go hiking. What I really love to do is go to old Indian ruins and just look around, see what I can find. In a way I get ideas from the old, and then try to come up with something new. Then I get back into it. Everything just starts coming together once I start making something. It just comes together in my mind."Allison is considered a success by all who are familiar with his work, but he has a different standard, set with his three sons in mind: "I think being successful is keeping everything balanced out between your family and your work. I think that's what being successful is, caring enough to spend time with your family, and not letting the work and the career overtake your life. I've seen a lot of people that have done that. I'm just glad that I've had people there to tell me the difference. Successful to me is just being happy and making sure my family is fed and clothed. That says it all, right there."

His father, the renowned silversmith, Roger Skeet, Sr. was one of the famed Indian trader, C.G. Wallaces primary in-house Navajo silversmiths along with such other accomplished luminaries as Austin Wilson and Ambrose Roanhorse. Skeet Sr. worked for Wallace at his landmark trading post at the Zuni Pueblo in far Western New Mexico for approximately 30 years from the late 1920s until his death in 1959.Roger Skeet, Jr. was born in 1933 and he began making silver alongside his Father in Wallaces trading post as aneight year-old boy. The silverwork of both the Skeets is quite similar, clean-lined and very traditionally-crafted but with a distinctly modern sensibility and always extremely fine detailing. As a young boy, Dan would watch his father doing silver work, so he learned the art of making jewelry from him. Lloyd Oliver was a silversmith at Shades of the West 40 years ago. He told them his son also was a silversmith so Dan became the resident silversmith at Shades of the West until his death.Dan felt a great connection with his father when working with silver. He used his father's tools and the knowledge his father handed down to him and always hoped his father would be proud of him.Dan loved silversmithing for many reasons: he loved making things with his hands, he loved taking a sheet of silver and creating something beautiful, and he loved to try different techniques of working with the metal and the various hues and shades of turquoise.Dan made both traditional and contemporary silver work. He used pottery and rug designs in his traditional work. He said he got his other inspiration from nature: trees, animals, birds, mountains. TOMMY SINGER(Navajo b. 1940 – 2014)Tommy grew up in a small community of Dilcon on the Navajo reservation. Tommy Singer was a Navajo silversmith who specialized in chip-inlay jewelry. His inlaid turquoise, coral, and silver pieces incorporated traditional Navajo designs. Singer gained acclaim as the originator of the chip inlay design. Because of this innovation, Tommy is considered by many as one of the greatest contemporary Indian jewelry silversmiths of our time. Even though he was world renowned, he worked on the Navajo reservation in a small studio surrounded with his family and other tribal members.The Singer family has been involved in silversmithing, stone and beadwork for a very long time, handing the art down from one generation to another. Tommy was a silversmith for over 50 years. He learned the art of silversmithing from his father when he was just 7 years old. His Father Tsinnigine Hathali was a Navajo Medicine man. Tommy incorporates many traditional sandpainting and rug designs of the Navajo People into his jewelry. Tommy began creating jewelry full-time at the age of 21. His early works were done in the silver overlay technique. His work soon began to feature Turquoise stones.While working with scrap turquoise chips, Tommy pioneered the technique of Chip inlay used by thousands of artists to this day. For many years Tommy and his brothers created Jewelry using the Chip inlay style. Later in life, Tommy had returned to his roots by creating Exquisite Silver Overlaid Jewelry with intricate designs. His current work often includes 14 Karat Gold Overlaid on Silver. Tommy also carved storyteller scenes and silver bead necklaces with tremendous skill.When asked about his work, Singer said, "Every piece is made with the various meanings from my traditional ways - the Navajo way of living. My father was asilversmith, too. He taught me, and wanted me to continue this trade. It was my father's dream that I learn to silversmith so that I could continue his beliefs."His work is well known internationally and is featured in a number of Indian art publications. One can easily recognize Tommy’s work. He marks his finished pieces with “T. Singer” or with “T and a crescent moon”. Whether Tommy created a bolo tie, buckle, ring, necklace, pendant, or bracelet, he stated that, “All my jewelry is made to satisfy my customer. Each piece is unique and is made very different. I try hard to make different styles and designs of my jewelry.”His legacy of work will continue to live on for many years. In fact, Rosita (Rose) and the family have continued Tommy’s legacy by creating jewelry with his designs. Tommy and his wife Rose came up with a new hallmark before his death which is “T&R Singer”. Once all of the items he made are sold, the family will be signing the new jewelry with the T&R Singer hallmark. His legacy of work will continue to live on for many years.

He started his career as a silversmith at the age of 14 as a buffer for his parent’s handmade sterling silver beads.Robert met the late silversmith, Kirk Smith, known for his unique styles of antique finish repousse stamp work, during the summer of 1986. Kirk became a mentor for Robert and taught him the art of creating jewelry – traditional Navajo stamping with an antique finish, at times high polished pieces all of which started from bracelets, earrings, concho belts, rings, squash blossoms, hair tie’s and so forth. It was an exciting time of in his life – learning a new trade and being able to support his family.Robert has enjoyed his work as a silversmith and has developed his own unique styles of Navajo Jewelry. Creating jewelry is his passion. His creations include handmade antique finished and sometimes high polished traditional and contemporary Navajo jewelry from squash blossoms to concho belts, earrings, bracelets/cuffs, rings and hair clips with sterling silver, turquoise and various gemstones.
