c1940 Early Matl 930 silver cross pendant. Late 30‘s-early 40‘s. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Selling pendant and giving necklace free with it. This isn‘t as big or fancy as some of the later crosses, but I believe it‘s rare if not one of a kind and likely made by Poulat herself. Also known by her jewelry studio name MATL, Matilde Poulat was a Mexican silversmith and jewelry designer. Best known for her exquisite and intricate necklaces, Matilde was an exceptional craftsman, fashioning handset pieces that alternate between opulent and ebullient. Poulats career took off when she launched her studio in 1934. Only a decade later she would set the tone for the rest of the industry, inspiring silversmiths in Mexico, California, and beyond to copy her designs. These pieces have come to be synonymous with the name MATL, even when they arent made by Poulat, often being described as Matl-esque. That said, there is only one Matilde Poulat and her pieces are ultimately un-copyable. Starting as a painter, Matilde brought much of her colorful aesthetic to the jewelry making business, coming up with designs that absolutely pop with fresh colors of the American Southwest and Mexico. Matl pieces were extremely popular during Poulats lifetime, and that demand has only increased as the years have gone by. These pieces of jewelry are considered extremely rare and many dont see the open market, making any upcoming Poulat auctions something to watch out for. Matilde Poulat was a Mexican jeweler and silversmith whose pieces were famed for their ornateness and their color. Best known for the work she did with her own studio, MATL, a Poulat necklace shows two things: perfect knowledge of silversmith craftsmanship and a whimsical, fun side to jewelry that to that point hadnt been explored. That whimsy made MATL an extremely popular brand during her lifetime. It was impossible to get a Poulat piece for many years. Utilizing opal, amethysts, and one-of-a-kind pyramidal designs, Poulat was able to create pieces that had never been thought of, let alone created, before by a jewelry maker. Her practice was continued by her nephew, Ricardo Salas, upon her death in 1960.

Just a few miles west of Gallup, NM., nestled among the canyons & hills of the small town of Lupton, AZ., lies the quaint, cozy workshop of the young Navajo artist, Alvin Yellowhorse. Alvin learned the silversmithing trade at an early age from his father, Frank Yellowhorse, and later mastered the techniques of cutting the small turquoise & other colorful stones into precise little pieces in which he assembles into intricate designs inspired by his Anasazi ancestors. This technique is called “Channel Inlay. A style of inlay where all the stones are cut & assembled together first & then ground flush before being highly polished. Alvin is credited for originating another style of inlay called “Corn Row Wave Inlay in which the stones are individually cut & rounded over before setting them into a silver or gold bracelet, pendant, ring, or link bracelet. Corn Row Wave Inlay is much more time consuming as he has to completely finish each stone one at a time before placing them into the gold or silver setting. Alvin creates each piece one at a time . There are no mass production techniques or assembly lines. His designs, although very contemporary, are enriched by the Zuni, Hopi, & Anasazi influences along with his own Navajo heritage. The son of a Zuni jeweler, Jacob Haloo, and a Navajo mother, Lolap Haloo, Jake Livingston was born in Pinehaven, NM in 1946. After returning from Vietnam in the early 1970s, where he received three *Purple Heart medals, Livingston first worked as a Navajo tribal policeman. He studied the Zuni style of mosaic inlay with master craftsman Dennis Edaakie and soon began working full time as a jeweler. He has been creating prize winning works of wearable art ever since. Frequently working with his wife Irene, he is the recipient of First Place and Best of Division awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market multiple times and his work is found in Lois Jackas book Navajo Jewelry: A Legacy of Silver and Stone. The exquisite work on this classic reversible pendant features a coral cardinal on one side and a gorgeous red headed bird on the other. Livingston used the stones as a painter would use paint to fashion his images. STITTGEN, Karl Heinz 1930 - 2023 Karl Stittgen emigrated from Germany in the early 1950s and established himself as a prominent jeweller and watchmaker in West Vancouver. His creations soon gained global recognition and consequently he opened additional Stittgen stores in Calgary, New York and San Francisco. In his golden years, he trained many Master Goldsmiths who carry on his traditions and techniques today. Karl Stittgens profound impact on both local and international jewellery design was honoured in 2009, when he received the Creative Achievement Award of Distinction at the 5th annual British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design. Karl was born in Bad Durkheim, Germany, and emigrated to Canada in 1952 at the age of 21. Although trained as a watchmaker, his creative urge led him to try his hand at jewelry making, where he gained the confidence of a loyal clientele drawn to his discerning eye for design. His reputation soon spread globally, and he expanded with stores in Calgary, New York, and San Francisco. Karl‘s loyal clients, recognizing his sense of style, taste, and precision, convinced him to design and furnish the unique homes of a very select few. Karl‘s first wife, Gabrielle Pontoppidan, whom he married in 1961, admired and supported these forays into new areas of creative work. Karl‘s second wife, Nora Sasaki, was a talented artist who complemented his vision and unique creative style. Together, they designed and built an exquisite architectural landmark home, "Halcyon Days," on Pender Island. The home reflected Karl‘s admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright in every detail. Both Karl and Nora took great delight in hosting many different creative people on the island and visitors from all over the world, entertaining them with a feast for all senses in their home. They were also renowned for their generosity towards the artistic community on Pender Island and beyond. Well into his eighties, Karl began working in the new medium of ceramics. His studio was a place where he cultivated imagination and had the incredible self-assurance to traverse new and uncharted territory. To see his creations, free in form but precise in construction, was to be in the presence of genius. Karl‘s childhood was difficult, bereft of encouragement to explore or parental affection and support. This may have forged Karl‘s inner strength and determination to become his own person strong in creative conviction with the courage to try the unthinkable. How else would a person move from being a watchmaker to a celebrated jeweler, to an architectural designer, and finally taking creativity literally back into his hands as an acclaimed ceramicist? Karl‘s creative trajectory was only possible because, as he often mentioned, he left Germany to live in Canada where he felt free to tread new terrain without formal training. In September 2009, Karl received the B.C. Creative Achievement Award of Distinction in Vancouver. He was selected for his "profound and lasting impact on applied art and design in British Columbia" and for a "lifetime of creative vision and innovation." David Tune David Tune, of Creek and Navajo descent, was born July 21,1955, in Winslow Arizona. He was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Davids motivation to create jewelry began in 1976, when he was commissioned to design the jewelry for the March of Dimes Poster Child and President Fords senate. David has been creating jewelry for over 16 years, as well as teaching High School for two of those years. In 1987, after winning countless awards, he was forced to resign himself from his art due to cancer. He was cured of his cancer by his uncle, and with pride and self-determination, returned in 1994 to his passion of creating beautiful pieces of jewelry. Like other excellent artists, the work of David Tunes work is distinctive and easily recognizable. Working primarily with sterling silver and gold, David uses multi-colors of coral, turquoise, lapis, sugilite, mother of pearl, opal, and various other materials in combination with his dramatic stamp work. His colorful and innovative inlays in his jewelry are inspired by the aerial views of the earth that he sees from hot-air ballooning and skydiving. His creations include rings, necklaces, bolos, bracelets, earrings, and concho belts. David feels that every marking on his jewelry has spiritual meaning. Allison Lee - Navajo Sterling and turquoise pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Allison "Snowhawk" Lee (1958 - 2022) was an award-winning artist from Mexican Springs, New Mexico. He was a full-blooded Navajo and is the third oldest of eight (four brothers and three sisters). Allison lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his three sons, Wyatt, Kyle and Trent. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with his family. When there was a boom in Indian Jewelry in the early seventies, Allisons mother and uncle started making Squash Blossoms. At the young age of 14, Allison was asked by his mother to make a silver ring with a Turquoise stone. He made the ring well and so began his interest in jewelry making. Allison graduated from Tohatchi High School, during the summers he worked at various silver shops in the Gallup area, where he perfected the methods of silversmithing from the top silversmiths in the shops. Allison began competing in juried art shows back in 1988 and continues this tradition of competition throughout his life. He received many top awards, such as: Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the George C. West Memorial Award for Excellence in Silver Jewelry (which he has won three years in a row), and at Indian Market in Santa Fe, NM. Allison was asked to join in on making a piece for the millennium sampler concha belt along with twelve renowned Indian Market jewelers. He was very honored to be chosen to participate in this collaboration. The proceeds of this auction benefited the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA). Nelson Garcia is a very competent silversmith that uses the best materials and does extremely clean/high end work as is hopefully evident here. <br><br>Nelson Garcia was born October sixth, 1955 in the village of Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. He was raised in a large family made up of four brothers and four sisters. One of the eldest, he matured early and with a good heart, shared in the responsibilities of his youth. From working in the fields with his brothers or watching the trade of his father, the seeds of perfection were sown.<br><br>His father, Joe Jay Garcia, was a silversmith with talents in traditional designs and Heishi necklaces. From studying his fathers workmanship more than a talent was formed. Nelson learned that any job can be completed but if not done correctly, it is a pointless task. In his grade school years he created his first works. Buying silver from his uncle, he would make silver cones that are used as the ending tips to a Heishi necklace. Once completed, he would walk throughout the village selling his silver cones to the many artists. Who knew that these elements would lay foundations to greater achievements in the years to come.<br><br>After high school Nelson said farewell to the comforts of home and in 1974 moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In school and full of optimism, he would begin the next chapter to his life. He started working in a local jewelry store as a silversmith. Once again studying his surroundings, this experience would give him the momentum to go into business for himself. As time passed, like every man he would find his happiness. In 1975 he married his wife Helen, a Navajo from the Naakaii Dinee clan. A year later his first child was born, a daughter whom they would name Coreen. To any business the early years define character and will. In 1983 with a newborn son, AAron, he decided to go into business for himself. With his creations packed and loaded into his car he drove to Page, Arizona for his first Art show. That Saturday he would make his first sale as an independent artist. Sadly, that would be his only sale for that day. One ring, in which he had to debate the price, but was finally sold. With a fresh fourteen dollars in hand, one would think dread would set in. Showing resilience he drove the next day to the Coconino center in Flagstaff, Arizona. This bold step would define his business ethic. He would attend this next art show with high hopes and patient hands. Driving home later that night with four-hundred eighty dollars in his pocket, his American dream had become a reality.<br><br> As the years have passed, Nelson has won many distinguished awards at some of the nations largest art exhibits. From the Santa Fe Indian Market to Red Earth in Oklahoma city. His jewelry has traveled into the heart of Europe with shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. 26" Helen Beckerhoff modernist sterling necklace with 1900 US silver dollar pendant. Nice solid sterling period mid century US made necklace just signed Beckerhoff, tested sterling. The pendant is removable.Helen Beckerhoff by Stowe Speaks Interviewed by Amanda Kuhnert on April 2010. Helen was a long-time resident of Stowe. From the late 1940’s to the late 1960’s she owned and operated a ski lodge, The Lantern, in the heart of Stowe Village. However, the shop was best known for the place where local, state, National and world events and issues were debated. Helen was always community minded. She served on the Stowe Select Board, the Stowe Planning Commission, and was secretary to the Stowe Area Association. When most people settled into retirement, Helen earned her Master’s degree and then taught English as a second language in China. She never lost her passion for travel.

Purchased from reputable "Brown's Trading Post" 11 years ago with reciept included.“Old Man” Leekya Deyuse – Master Zuni Fetish Carver Leekya Deyuse (Leek-yah Day-you-see), was probably the most well known and one of the finest fetish carvers in the history of Zuni. Born in 1889, Leekya created beautiful fetish necklaces, carved animals (table fetishes) of assorted stones, turquoise figurines and fetishes set in jewelry.Leekya worked for C.G. Wallace, a well know and influential trader at Zuni for 50 years. Leekya had 3 children, Frances, Alice and Sarah. His grandchildren and great grandchildren continue to carve today. Some of them are Delvin, Freddie, and Hayes Leekya and Juana Homer, Patrick Homer and Bernard Homer, Jr. Old Man Leekya died in 1966.

Robert and Bernice Leekya Zuni Sterling turquoise and branch coral pendant/pin, no issues.Robert Leekya (Zuni Pueblo, 1934-2019) and Bernice Leekya (Zuni Pueblo, b.1930s) Husband and wife, Robert and Bernice Leekya were born during the 1930’s. Leekya Deyuse was Robert’s father, while Bernice’s parents were Warren and Doris Ondelacy. Bernice’s sister was the renowned Zuni artist, Alice Quam. They began making jewelry together in 1953, the year they were married. Robert and Bernice share their RLB stamp.

Pat Mathiesen Sterling Scuptural pendant "Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer" Measurements in pics. No issues. This artist mainly did bronzes which sell for thousands on the secondary market.Pat Mathiesen was born on January 15, 1934, in North Hollywood, California.Mathiesen graduated from Hollywood High School in 1951, working on dude ranches and in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, during the summers of 1951 and 1952. In 1953, she studied at the California School of Fine Arts and the San Francisco School of Commercial Art, then worked for Western Airlines in 1955-1956. In the latter year, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where she became a travel agent until 1959, when she married David Mathiesen, a pilot.In 1978, following a divorce the previous year, Mathiesen moved to a cabin in West Yellowstone with her two children. Danny Romero Yaqui (1954-2018) 14k Gold Diamond, Tanzanite, Opal, sugilite, coral, boulder opal, and lapis necklace. Measurements in pics, accompanied with 2013 receipt. Still in like new condition with no damage or detectable wear. Please keep in mind that in 2013 gold averaged 1/2 the price it currently is so did the other top grade materials used to make this, not to mention a deceased artists talent and time. Also It seems this dealer sells secondary market items, so I believe this 7k was a used price in 2013 as it's really not a lot of money for this necklace now and wasn't then.  18.5" long Danny Romero 1954-2018 Danny Romero is of both Yaqui and Spanish heritage. He creates jewelry and paintings from his home in New Mexico. Growing up in Douglas, Arizona, he has been working with stone and silver for over 20 years. "I like E.S. Curtis photographs," he says, referring to the famous turn-of-the-century photographer and ethnographer who documented more than 80 Native American tribes. "I go through magazines. I've done drawings and I paint". He was one of five silversmiths invited to the Night of the First Americans at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and he has had showings of his jewelry in galleries and museums in many parts of the country as well as in Germany, Japan, and Canada. Danny Romero is no longer producing jewelry. The jewelry we have was made by Danny Romero circa 2005. Danny received wide acclaim in the 1970's-80's for both his traditional turquoise jewelry as well as his inlay jewelry. Danny Romero was the first silversmith to literally put painted art into jewelry.

With accompanied 2008 appraisel from Waddell Gallery 2008, keep in mind gold averaged 1/3 of it's current price in 2008 so do the other materials not to mention a deceased master's labor and skill. No issues with the necklace or pendant, no damage or significant wear. 23" long and other measurements in pics. 64 grams total weight.Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant – a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral.
