Philbert Poseyesva Hopi 14k gold/Sterling silver charoite dangle earrings

Philbert Poseyesva Hopi 14k gold/Sterling silver charoite dangle earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid 14k gold, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Phil Poseyesva mastered the technique of traditional Hopi overlay as a young silversmith. A self-taught artist, he started making jewelry at the age of thirteen. Today, Phil takes the clean, abstract designs of Hopi overlay and combines them with high quality stones such as natural turquoise, lapis lazuli and coral, making his work easily distinguishable from others. While the symbols Phil uses are drawn from centuries old traditions, his work has a very modern and abstract look. He uses both sterling silver and 14-karat gold. The stones and shapes of his jewelry are often asymmetrical, adding even more drama to the highly polished silver on black background.Hopi overlay is described as sleek, clean, balanced and dramatic. The artists take abstract Hopi symbols representing clan symbols, rain clouds, corn, birds and katsinas that were used in pottery and basketmaking, and place them into silver and gold. The Hopi overlay technique was developed in the late 1930s to give Hopi jewelry a distinctive look. The process is difficult and requires precision and a steady hand to achieve the smooth lines and intricate detail.Rather than making a stencil to use as a guide to cut his silver, Poseyesva draws his designs directly onto the silver or gold. A hole is punched into the silver and a tiny saw is used to cut out the design. In an appliqué-like technique, the designs are soldered onto a bottom layer of silver that will become the contrasting background. After the piece is cooled, Poseyesva uses his own handmade chisels to create a textured background that follows the shape of the design. Chemicals oxidize and darken this layer. The textured and oxidized recessed background, combined with the highly polished raised surface, gives Hopi jewelry its characteristic look.Poseyesva comes from the Second Mesa Village of Mishongnovi on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. Although he has gone to school and worked in several fields both on and off the Reservation -- building construction, diesel mechanics, landscaping and recreation -- he has always maintained his art of jewelry making. Poseyesva says that it's often during these breaks from full-time jewelry making that he gets re-energized and comes up with new design ideas. A member of the Bear Clan, Phil signs his work with a stylized bear paw or a double "P."a whole new aesthetic level, keeping the vital connection with their past, yet transcending it. Their style is now fully international.” Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Circa last quarter of the 20th century.Tommy Jackson was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 20, 1958. He was a talented Navajo artist from Chinle, Arizona. Tommy learned the art of silversmithing from his mother and father, Martha and Gene Jackson. Tommy is known for his work in both gold and silver. He was accomplished in a wide range of jewelry styles, from traditional to contemporary inlay. He won numerous awards for his beautiful and unique jewelry from the Heard Museum Show in Phoenix, Santa Fe Indian Market and The Museum of Northern Arizona, to name a few. Tommy was a graduate of the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. For several years, he taught at Wide Ruins Community School. He taught Navajo children Navajo reading, writing, history and culture, and arts and crafts. Many of his former students are now established jewelers themselves. Tommy was married to a wonderful woman named Marie Jackson, who is also a jeweler. Together they had seven children and lived in Ganado, Arizona. In recent years he worked on jewelry full-time with his children and wife, Marie. “Marie and I give a lot of credit to the Lord for blessing our hands and giving us talent to make unique and beautiful jewelry,” said Tommy. Tommy passed away in March 2025. He was a wonderful artist who we loved working with for many years. He will be missed! Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Les Baker Shop southwestern Sterling silver vintage sugilite earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa third quarter of the 20th century.Les Baker was a well-known southwest jewelry artist who designed and also made jewelry himself. Although he was Anglo he employed many Native American silversmiths throughout the years, most notably Fritson Toledo, the great Navajo artist.Les had a great deal to do with the success of the Stagecoach. We have sold more Les Baker jewelry throughout the years than any other jewelry artist. But beyond that, Les was a great mentor and friend to Susan and Gary, here at the Stagecoach. Back in the late 1970’s Gary called Les about selling his jewelry. Gary and his father, Jim, met Les in Denver and have sold his jewelry ever since. In the early 1980’s, Gary spent a week in Albuquerque while one of Les’ Navajo silversmiths taught Gary the craft. This was one of the turning points at the Stagecoach. We could now size our own sterling silver and gold rings and eventually make our own jewelry right here at the Stagecoach. This was and is a huge advantage in selling jewelry as our knowledge of the craft went up exponentially. And for all this, Les asked nothing in return.Les was born in 1935 and when he was older joined the Navy. After the Korean War he headed back to New Mexico and became interested in American Indian jewelry. His wife at the time (ex-wife now) wanted a Navajo squash blossom necklace but Les couldn’t afford it. He was always resourceful and since Les didn’t have the money to purchase the squash blossom he figured he would try making one himself. It turned out so nice that when Les’ wife was at a party with Edith Maisel, the “Queen of Indian Jewelry” was so impressed that she offered Les a job. Maisel helped popularize “Indian Jewelry” and though it wasn’t actually handmade, Maisels’ offered many Native Americans a job and increased the awareness of this art form. This was Les’ big break and he later also learned from the great Native American artist Carl Louthey.Eventually Les opened his own shop and was at the right time and the right place when the great “Indian Jewelry” boom in the 1970’s hit. Everybody wanted this turquoise Indian jewelry, from celebrities to the common man and woman. Les teamed up for a while with Bing Crosby (not the singer but the Indian Trader) and at one time had around 50 Native Americans working for him. Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Fans admire her artistic combination of contrasting materials such as faceted aquamarine with fossils, jade with vegetable ivory, or two-thousand year old Roman glass....... her "quirky" combinations create her signature look. Her favorite artists for inspiration are Gustav Klimt and Henri Matisse. The back of all of Rebecca's pieces are stamped with spiritual messages in order to create a "talisman", which by definition, is something "imbued with magic by its maker".

Oscar Betz southwestern sterling silver turquoise, spiny oyster, lapis earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Oscar Betz moved to Jerome, Arizona sometime between 1967 and 1979. He was among the many hippies, renegades, freethinkers, and artists who relocated to Arizona’s richest copper mining city during those years. Many of his later years were spent in anta Fe, New Mexico. He is now recognized as a renowned silversmith. His work has been featured in galleries and movies, and also worn by many celebrities. His work is highly collectible. Oscar Betz‘s work was most prominent in the 1970‘s and 1980‘s. His pieces were actively sought out and purchased by Hollywood celebrities as well as collectors of fine one-of-a-kind handmade Indian jewelry. He was one of the first southwest artists to use many different stones together in one piece of jewelry. Oscar‘s work remains in high demand today.Sought after by the likes of Ralph Lauren in the early 90‘s Oscar crossed over into the fashion world with his remarkable jewelry. Part of the popularity of the Betz earrings was that for their size they are well balanced and easy to wear. Designs are set on 2 part silver frames that are hinged. Betz’s pieces include earrings, pendants, and pins in sterling silver and turquoise. He is most well-known for a collaborative design he created with Rocki Gorman and made a place for himself in Southwestern culture with his highly sought after chandelier earrings. These are typically sterling silver, set with turquoise, spiny oyster, variscite, amethyst, and agate. Other earring designs of this type incorporate a variety of stones that include coral and black onyx and frequently using rare and other high end stones. Rocki Gorman continues the Betz tradition with her jewelry. Among his other notable creations are Navajo Sterling Silver cuff bracelets that have a three-dimensional design with excellent engraving. Oscar Getz is now retired. His son, L’Mont Betz, who learned the jewelry business from his father, has been running his own shop called, ‘Broken Wing Designs’ since 1983 where he sells designs created by Oscar and keeps the family tradition alive.

Rubber replacement backs as shown. Leo Feeney 1948-2025) Leo Feeney has been designing his southwest style jewelry for more than thirty-five years. He was first introduced to southwest style jewelry in Flagstaff, Arizona. The jewelry of the Zuni Pueblo had a great influence on his style. He uses a mixture of semi-precious and precious stones to create his one of a kind artistic jewelry. The son of a Navy career father, Leo Feeney moved around the United States frequently–from Key West, Florida as a child, to Emmaus, Pennsylvania for high school graduation. After attending a local community college, a silversmith professor took a strong interest in Leo’s work and an apprenticeship was born. Over the years, Leo learned numerous silversmith techniques and began to hone his craft with contemporary jewelry styles. In 1971, while visiting Havasupai in the Grand Canyon, Leo met his now wife, Emily, and relocated to her home town in Flagstaff, Arizona. This move inspired him to study different jewelry styles including the rich history of Native American design. It wasn’t long before he opened a store in a building owned by his father-in-law and began selling his unique Southwestern style jewelry. Greatly influenced by Zuni designs, Leo mixes precious and semi-precious stones to create his unique pieces. His signature cluster-style settings featuring intricate stone patterning is highly regarded in the jewelry community. Leo currently resides in Arizona with his family.

Unmarked, circa second quarter of the 20th century. screw back earrings.   Unmarked, attributed to Lambert Homer Sr. Homer, Lambert Sr. Biography (1917-1972)Widely recognized as a fine lapidarist, Lambert Homer collaborated with other artists who worked with trader C. G. Wallace. He is perhaps best known for pieces featuring intricate mosaic inlay on spiny oyster shell that closely resemble shell inlay work found at prehistoric Southwestern sites. After removing the spines from these distinctively coral-colored shells, Homer inlaid them with white shell, turquoise and jet, creating vibrant geometric patterns. Some of his most spectacular pieces are belts with conchas of inlaid spiny oyster shell. Homer also made inlaid Knife Wings and Rainbow Gods, and he is credited with the first use of the Gan dancer as a jewelry design motif.

Zuni artists with whom Lambert Homer collaborated include Dan Simplicio, Leo Poblano, Ida Poblano, and his son Lambert Homer, Jr. He also worked with Navajo silver-workers Roger Skeet and Charlie Bitsui. Lambert, who was married to Juanita Homer, and his brother Bernard, who was married to Alice Homer, worked closely with their wives, both of whom were daughters of Leekya.

In 1969, at the age of ten, he began his apprenticeship at the Tucson Thunderbird Shop. For the next decade, his after-school training would be a major part of his daily routine. Ike Wilson (1900-1942) Navajo large sterling silver dangly hand stamped earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa second quarter of the 20th century. Diné silversmith Ike Wilson worked for many years for the Kelsey Trading Company at Zuni. He did silverwork for many of the Zuni lapidary artists including Ida Vacit Poblano. He often collaborated with his wife, Katherine Wilson. Navajo Nation artist Ike Wilson (1900-1942) would sign his creations with his bow and arrow hallmark. There has been some confusion in the past about the hallmark of Ike Wilson (1901-1942). It seems that sometimes his work was attributed to Austin Wilson. Both men were born in the same year and in a similar area of the reservation and both men worked at times for trader C. G. Wallace and the Kelsey Trading Company. Ike Wilsons work is signed with a bow and arrow. After his death in 1942, his wife Katherine Wilson (1907-1985) continued to use his hallmark. The bow and arrow hallmark was initially attributed to Ikes contemporary, Austin Wilson, but the corrected attribution was published in Messier, 2014.

    H. Fred Skaggs southwestern modernist sterling silver clip-on earrings. Great earrings with no damage or significant wear. Fantastic design and execution, strong springs on clips. Weight and measurements in the pictures. H. Fred Skaggs was a prominent metalsmith who worked in the American Southwest beginning in the mid-1950s. He is also known for inspiring and training other artisans with his knowledge of silversmithing. Some of his pieces display traditional Southwestern designs and elements, while others are purely Modernist in nature. H. Fred Skaggs began his jewelry-making career in 1956. He was part of the community of artists who set up shop in the Lloyd Kiva Craft Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kiva‘s vision offered them a place to learn from one another as artisans while plying their respective crafts. Several Native American silversmiths, notably Hopi artisan Charles Loloma, were influenced by Skaggs‘ work. A potter by trade, Loloma was encouraged by and apprenticed to Skaggs, who taught him the art of silversmithing. While most of his jewelry was crafted of silver, Skaggs did work in karat gold occasionally. Given the style of the gold pieces collectors run across, they were likely commissioned by his clientele. Many of his silver jewelry designs were embellished with semi-precious gemstones. Skaggs was active as a jewelry craftsman until he died in 1983.
