Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) silver, turquoise and branch coral bolo tie 38" long 2 5/8" x 3" slide. 70.4 grams, no issues, unmarked. 50's-60's.Dan Simplicio Sr.(1917-1969) is one of the most collected & one of the most innovative Zuni artisans from decades ago.In a way,you can say he is similar to Charles Loloma in how he brought new ideas to what was considered 'common' to Native American jewelry..Ideas that just weren't happening before & changed how things were being done,as well as introducing new materials into Native American jewelry. It is said that back in the 30's,he was one of the 1st Native American artists to work in gold, which doesn't in the least, surprize me!In Dan's later years,it was he who was the 1st to incorporate using whole pieces of branch coral in it's natural form & also introduced leaf work into Zuni jewelry. His leaf work was fluid in design & how at times he would beautifully wrap these so elegantly around the coral..The leaves themselves were like pieces of art,all on their own.He collaborated with who are now some of the most sought out names, when it comes to 'Masters" of Zuni jewelry..Artists like the famed Leo Poblano,LeekyaDeyuse, Teddie Weahkee,Bernard Homer and Lee Edaakie.Early in his career,he was employed by C.G.Wallace at his Zuni trading post, where he did a lot of grinding work & set stones for the company.. Wallace collected some of Dan's finest work and when his collection was auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1975, it included more than 50 pieces by Simplicio. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what
it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings
photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if
the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is
shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Nelson Navajo Large Sterling and turquoise bolo tie, 44" long, measurements in pics. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

Nelson Garcia Santo Domingo Silver bolo tie with high grade turquoise 43" long, 68.7 grams, 2.25" x 1.75" slide, 1 7/8" tall x 10mm wide custom handmade tips, very high grade leather cord all in excellent condition. Nelson Garcia is a very competent silversmith that uses the best materials and does extremely clean/high end work as is hopefully evident here.

Nelson Garcia was born October sixth, 1955 in the village of Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. He was raised in a large family made up of four brothers and four sisters. One of the eldest, he matured early and with a good heart, shared in the responsibilities of his youth. From working in the fields with his brothers or watching the trade of his father, the seeds of perfection were sown.

His father, Joe Jay Garcia, was a silversmith with talents in traditional designs and Heishi necklaces. From studying his fathers workmanship more than a talent was formed. Nelson learned that any job can be completed but if not done correctly, it is a pointless task. In his grade school years he created his first works. Buying silver from his uncle, he would make silver cones that are used as the ending tips to a Heishi necklace. Once completed, he would walk throughout the village selling his silver cones to the many artists. Who knew that these elements would lay foundations to greater achievements in the years to come.

After high school Nelson said farewell to the comforts of home and in 1974 moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In school and full of optimism, he would begin the next chapter to his life. He started working in a local jewelry store as a silversmith. Once again studying his surroundings, this experience would give him the momentum to go into business for himself. As time passed, like every man he would find his happiness. In 1975 he married his wife Helen, a Navajo from the Naakaii Dine’e clan. A year later his first child was born, a daughter whom they would name Coreen.

To any business the early years define character and will. In 1983 with a newborn son, AAron, he decided to go into business for himself. With his creations packed and loaded into his car he drove to Page, Arizona for his first Art show. That Saturday he would make his first sale as an independent artist. Sadly, that would be his only sale for that day. One ring, in which he had to debate the price, but was finally sold. With a fresh fourteen dollars in hand, one would think dread would set in. Showing resilience he drove the next day to the Coconino center in Flagstaff, Arizona. This bold step would define his business ethic. He would attend this next art show with high hopes and patient hands. Driving home later that night with four-hundred eighty dollars in his pocket, his American dream had become a reality.

As the year’s have passed, Nelson has won many distinguished awards at some of the nations largest art exhibits. From the Santa Fe Indian Market to Red Earth in Oklahoma city. His jewelry has traveled into the heart of Europe with shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He has formed relationships of trust with his many customers in the western world. Assured perfection in his work is what should be expected. Only selecting the finest stones and designing the most careful expressions. He lives a life of success in Phoenix to this day with his wife and family.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Tommy Jackson Navajo Sterling turquoise bolo tie. Nice large bolo from a well
respected artist. Tommy's bolo's tend to retail 2-4k each new. Bolo measures
2.5" x 1 5/8" tips are thick and heavy Cord is thick and very well made with no
issues. 46" long with a total weight of 108.1 grams.

Tommy Jackson was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January20, 1958 but grew up in the
heart of Navajo land in Chinle, Arizona. He went to high school in Chinle, the
town at the mouth of the legendary Canyon de Chelly—a stronghold for 19th
century Navajo, known then as the “Lords of the Land”. Steeped in mythology,
this landscape echoes the strength and beauty in the Navajo bedrock of
beliefs—foremost of those is responsibility to family and clan. A husband,
father, and grandfather, Tommy is also a world-renowned gold and silversmith,
his award-winning pieces on exhibit in museums and treasured in collections
around the world. As a premier Navajo Silversmith he counted amongst those few
known as “The Supersmiths.”

Jackson started silversmithing in 1973, learning at the bench of his parents,
renowned silversmiths Gene and Martha Jackson. (He is also the nephew of Dan
Jackson, another well-known silversmith.) However, it was his mother who urged
him to pursue a degree, and he followed her footsteps into education, eventually
teaching elementary school at Wide Ruins on the Reservation. But jewelry-making
called to him in his spare time, in the after-hours, in the late night, and by
1988 he was winning prestigious awards, and has continued winning nearly every
year since at the big shows, including Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard. He
was also chosen as Navajo Tribal representative for the Salt Lake City Winter
Olympics.

A striking example of Tommy’s pieces is the motif of Navajo rug designs. He
sometimes works these patterns directly into the gold or silver; or he inlays
stones in visually stunning creations that reflect the complexity of Navajo
tapestries. Other pieces are a declaration of his passion for high-grade
American turquoise. These pieces are all about the great stone. He will use
heavy-gauge silver, and in keeping with the old style tradition then chisel or
hand-stamp, all with an eye of showcasing a great old American turquoise stone
such as Bisbee, Morenci, Lander Blue or Candelaria. He is known for integrating
traditional Navajo designs with a modern flair, working with gold and silver and
a variety of precious and semi-precious stones.

He has won numerous awards for his beautiful and unique jewelry from the Heard
Museum Show in Phoenix, Santa Fe Indian Market and The Museum of Northern
Arizona, to name a few including First at Indian Market, as recently as 2014. He
and his wife, Marie, who does much of the stone-cutting for his pieces, have
pieces featured in national publications.

c1978 Frank Patania Jr Southwestern modernist sterling bolo with turquoise and 100 peso Mexican coin. Bolo is 94 grams without the box of course. Comes with original Thunderbird shop box (3 out of 4 corners are split on box top. Bolo slide is 2.5" tall x 2 3/8" wide 38" long. I think this piece had to have been made in 1978, the year the coin was issued, a year or two later at the most. The training Frank Jr. received was a breath of fresh air in the history of contemporary American craft. To understand the importance of this instruction, one must look to Frank Sr., who came to America with his experience of the apprenticeship system from Italy in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. This had a lasting effect on the handmade tradition. Mass production became apart of everyday life. The need for the services of skilled, educated artisans declined, as did the apprenticeship programs that trained them. It was accepted that mass production pieces were in general of better quality than what most people could make. Many craftsmen were forced to close shop and join in the factory ranks as designers. The effect of mass production on jewelry design is evident with a glance of any "Sears and Roebuck" catalogues of the early 20th century. Since these products were being made for the masses, designs were often "dumbed down", reflecting "safe" motifs repeatedly rooted in past trends. Reproduction became the national aesthetic. There were however, "pockets" within the United States that were exceptions. The Kalo Shops and Roycrofter, for example, were teaching apprenticeship programs, but they were small factors compared to the overwhelming impact of mass production.Like many first generation American children, Frank Jr. was encouraged to follow a formal education. Interestingly, he did not choose applied arts, but rather American History, with a minor in Anthropology. Reflecting on his choices, he believes his father would have thought a degree in applied arts would have been "a waste of time," because nothing could compare to the crafts education he had already imparted to his son.By the time Frank Jr. joined the shop full-time, the climate towards crafts had undergone a major change. Postwar America witnessed an explosion in the development of architecture, industrial design, and the handcrafts. For the first time in decades, craft was enjoying a newfound appreciation, much of which was due to en masse support of craftsmen through universities and crafts schools. An indication of the health of the contemporary jewelry movement can be seen in the surge of important exhibitions during the 40s and 50s. The Museum of Modern Art in NYC took an important step by promoting the first major exhibition of contemporary jewelry in 1946. Magazines like Design Quarterly and Craft Horizon (now American Craft) devoted full sections to design and contemporary jewelry.By the 1950s, a number of people were making contemporary jewelry on a professional scale. That same year, The American Craft council held its first conference, attended by over 450 crafts men and women from 30 states. During the three day conference they addressed many concerns of the young craftsman, including: 1) the craftsmen's relationship to society in economics and social aesthetics; 2) design importance as it related to techniques; and 3) problems in professional practices in the small business. While many young craftsmen in the United States were just addressing these issues for the first time, The Thunderbird Shop of Tucson and Santa Fe had already found resolution in regards to these problems and had implemented them in to a system that allowed the creativity of the shop to flourish while maintaining financial success.Today, Frank, Jr. and his wife Donna travel between Tucson and Santa Fe. Frank, Jr. says he is grateful for the life he has been given, acknowledging his joy in being able to do what his loves for a living and finally arriving at a place in which he can create the pieces he chooses without the pressures of the market. (Fig 25-27) He looks to his son, Sam, to carry on the family name and traditions, recognizing the struggle of a young designer with a family and the pressures to meet payroll while still maintain ones own inimitable style.
