He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

Collected, but never worn it seems. Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Arizona, USA Native American jewelry artist. He is self taught. Over his career, he has been the recipient of countless awards, including Best of Show and 1st Place. He was raised on the Laguna Pueblo of Paraje but split time with relatives in Hopi so his work displays strong influences from both cultures. He served twenty years in the Air Force inclusive of a year in Vietnam. While in the service he obtained a degree in a special area of medical research (lab work). While still in the service, in 1972, he started working in jewelry in 1972. He has added to his skills over the years. It was once he started engraving in 1985 that his metal work became distinctly identifiable. I love that he still does small, dainty pieces that are affordable to virtually anyone. I purchased a pair of his earrings in an airport store in Denver 25 years ago for myself without knowing who he was. I still love them and wear them regularly. He has fairly recently started working with several very interesting materials. The first is Niobium. I probably shouldn‘t even mention it given I sold out of the pieces I bought before I got a chance to post them but I will get more at some point. Niobium is a metal that, when oxidized, can take on some beautiful colors. The other metal Howard is working in is Argentium silver. Standard Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is classified as Sterling as it still has a 92.5% silver content but a small portion of the copper has been replaced by Germanium. The result is startling. There are a number of advantages to the artist in how they can work with the material but to the end user (and me) the difference is the huge reduction is tarnishing. The finished work also is amazingly bright, noticeably more so than even the most polished standard Sterling. Argentium requires makers (artists) be registered with them to utilize the distinct hallmark of a flying unicorn. Howard is a registered user and is moving over to the use of Argentium almost exclusively. I will mark on each piece if it is Argentium. Artist may USE Argentium without registration but may not use the hallmark. I had some work by Myron Panteah that I‘m all but certain was Argentium but was not hallmarked as such. Howard‘s business is a family affair with both his wife, Patricia and daughter being heavily involved. His daughter is an accomplished silversmith. They are lovely people and I really enjoyed their company this year (2017) at Prescott Indian Market.

Boyd Tsosie, born in 1954, is a distinguished Navajo jeweler whose innovative designs have significantly influenced contemporary Native American jewelry. Vintage, possibly unworn. Jeanette Dale is a contemporary Navajo silversmith who learned from her mother, but has developed a traditional style all her own. Jeanette‘s pieces are recognizable for her distinctive combination of silverwork and beautiful natural stones. Jeanette prefers the traditional Navajo style with heavy, deep stamping and high polishes. She still follows her first employer‘s advice: to leave a mark to show the jewelry was handmade. In 1973 Jeanette was working at the Fairchild Electronics Plant in Shiprock cutting out computer chips with a diamond saw. She was the fastest cutter at the plant with the best quality work. The plant shut down that year and she lost her job. She then made the decision to become a silversmith. "It just came naturally to me," she says. "Soldering was just like I was born to it. I showed my first ring to a dealer and he hired me to make jewelry for him." After nearly 40 years of jewelry making, Jeanette doesn‘t have to convince anyone to buy her jewelry. Solid sterling silver, circa last quarter of the 20th century. This artist did very little work in silver as his work was so desirable/expensive. I believe he is one of the few 20th century Native American artists to have done more work in gold than in silver. Even in the 70‘s he was working in gold, but most of the silver jewelry he made was in the 70‘s. So while this may not be more valuable than a similar gold bracelet, it is rarer. Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. He was the IACA Artist of the Year in 1996 and earned many other prestigious awards and accolades including First Place and Best of Division at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Category at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM.

Weight and measurements in pictures, marked as shown. Mid 20th century with appropriate wear. The system of trading posts in the arid southwest had an enormous impact on how the area was shaped, both economically and in the minds and imaginations of travelers to the area. One such post was established by Jack Michelson and his wife, Mildred, in 1932 in the growing city of Albuquerque. Mildreds maiden name was Bell, so the Michelsons chose the name Bell Trading Post for their business. The post was located along the new highway known as Route 66. Michelson hoped this spot would be a boon in establishing his business as a place where tourists could find locally made Native American jewelry. The beginning years were a struggle but the location did help the trading post hold on, particularly when Roosevelts New Deal created the CCC and truckers were hitting the roads to transport goods. Bell Trading Post was in the right location to sell them souvenirs for their family back home. Jobs were hard to come by then and many Native artisans were willing to make Jack Michelsons jewelry. But money was scarce as well so the Michelsons looked to earlier entrepreneurs like Fred Harvey for how to make their new business a success. They installed their own machines for making the jewelry and used copper and nickel more than silver and gold to create their pieces. In the initial years, the post marked its jewelry with the image of a bell. Over the years there would be other trademarks they used, such as an arrow with a bell sign hanging from it. Most of these trademarks included a bell in some part of the design. Due to the fact that he had little competition, Jack Michelson decided against paying the cost to file these initial trademarks used during the 1930s. The years during WWII saw the business boom. The southwest was designated as a military training area and there were many soldiers far from home looking for gifts to send back to their families. Bell Trading Post expanded its business and began to sell their products wholesale to other tourist shops. With the death of Jack in 1957, the business of Bell Trading Post passed to his children, Jack, Douglas and Jacquelyn. The change ushered in a new era for the company. The siblings opted to file their first trademark, and to expand their product line. In 1969, they formed Sunbell, a corporation which oversaw their new product lines such as Oglala Lakota moccasins and copperware as well as their jewelry. Sunbell remained in business until the late 1980s.

Navajo silversmith, Kee Nez, is a member of the Many-Goats clan and is from an artistic family. His mother is a rug weaver and his grandfather was a silversmith, but he credits his award-winning brother, Al Nez, with influencing his style. Kee uses 14K gold and sterling silver to create his stunning handcrafted surface design on bolas, rings, pendants, and earrings. He often uses sandcasting techniques to produce each item and many times uses the finest American turquoise or richly colored coral as a focal point on the piece.
