Buddy Lee Mossman Choctaw 14k gold, sterling silver lapis, fossilized coral pin. No issues, Circa last quarter of the 20th century. 37 grams Buddy Lee Mossman, a Santa Fean and one of the most unique artists of the Southwest, was born in Missouri, and, he claimed, of Choctaw descent. His creative forces began to emerge in the 1980s at which time he began teaching himself the art of silversmithing. Buddy drew from the works of three late great artists: renowned Chiricahua Apache sculptor, Allan Houser (Haozous), Master Hopi Silversmith. Charles Loloma and Spanish Great, Pablo Picasso. While his pieces mirror the Sacredness of Houser, the Decorativeness of Loloma and the Surrealism of Picasso, Mossman was an artist in his own right. Buddy considered his Jewelry sculptures. The smallest simplest ring to the biggest ornamental Kachina Bolo was sacred.

1940‘s UITA6 Navajo Sterling silver hand stamped butterfly pin/brooch. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. No issues, Circa second quarter of the 20th century, "The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts." “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb." Don Smouse was the chief Judge for silversmithing for the Navajo Nation for a time and dealt with the highest quality turquoise from around the world. The Trading Post was Borrego Pass Trading Post along the continental divide just south and west of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Smouse's were old time traders and at one point were the oldest living traders in the USA and were on the national news during the 90's for still trading the old way. Don helped train the top artists in the trade and sold there jewelry from the trading Post. They had buyers come from the Middle East, Europe and Asia for the top quality product being produced. The stamp is the Smouse traders stamp.

1949 Kenneth Begay Navajo sterling silver olla flower holder vase brooch/pin. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. No issues, circa mid 20th century. Dated 1949. Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) was called the “father of modern Navajo jewelry” for his clean, bold, modern designs. But he also exemplifies the long history and continuity of Navajo jewelry-making: Begay studied under Fred Peshlakai, who had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught many others including his son, Harvey, now a renowned jeweler. Though deeply rooted in traditional jewelry-making techniques, Begay’s work was so innovative that it was rejected from a 1949 exhibition of Native art as too radical. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, “I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style.”

No issues, circa third quarter of the 20th century. 60‘s to early 70‘s. Jerry Roan (1919-1977) Navajo tribal native Jerry Roan (1919-1977) had a productive life as a silversmith and jewelry maker. He began actively working at silversmithing around 1968. In 1969, a year after he began smithing, he on a 1st Award at the Navajo Tribal Fair in Arizona. Roan was included in the 2002 exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, and the Yellowhorse Museum in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Ira Custer Navajo Ira Custer learned the art of silversmithing from his parents, Benny and Emily Custer at their small shop near Greasewood Arizona on the Navajo reservation. He specializes in traditional sand casting and intricate carvings on tufa stone. Recently, he has learned to inlay his cast creations. Self taught, he has won many awards and routinely sells out at Santa Fe Indian Market.

Ramon Dalangyawma Born Ramon Albert, Jr. (a non-Hopi surname), his grandmother gave him the name Dalangyawma, a name of the Greasewood Clan. As a young man, he attended school in Santa Fe and served in the US Marines. Ramon began his silver working career in 1978 at Hopicrafts then located near the village of Hotevilla. His designs come from his experiences in life - clouds, thunderbolts and rain - important in an area with no irrigation for crops; and bear, spider, antelope, prayer feathers, kachinas, kokopelli, corn - the clan religious symbols, the basis of Hopi life. Ramon‘s work is characterized by the very heavy weight (thickness) silver he uses and his laser like precision in cutting out his designs and meticulous background stamping - nothing but the highest quality. He is a very fine man who we are proud to call our friend! Ramon uses his name stamped into the reverse of his pieces as his hallmark. Earlier examples of his work were marked with a composite RA. Ramon lives in Hotevilla. His son Cheston was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp and graduated from Arizona State University where he obtained his Master‘s Degree in Criminal Justice. At present, Cheston is living in Artesia, NM and working as an instructor at the Federal Police Academy. Mindful of his role in encouraging the next generation of Native American artisans, Fritz has returned as an instructor to the Poeh Arts Center in Pojoaque, NM, where he was once a student. His time as a teacher has helped to strengthen his own skills as a jewelry-maker and inspires him and his students to experiment with progressive designs. An amiable spirit, Fritz explains that his fashion-forward, sculptural jewelry designs are a combination of forethought and serendipitous discovery, resulting in jewelry that excites both his students and collectors. Examples of his awe-inspiring jewelry can be seen in Dexter Cirillo‘s book, Southwestern Indian Jewelry.

Huge 1940‘s Leo Poblano Zuni multi-stone inlay butterfly pin sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. All stones/inlay secure in bezels with very old fracture to jet inlay in center at bottom inlaid turquoise. Circa mid 20th century, unmarked other than C.G. Wallace code on the reverse side. Attributed to Leo Poblano family. Very big pin, it would be a big belt buckle by most standards. The "Average" men‘s belt buckle is 3" wide, this is 3.5" wide. Leo Poblano (1905-1959) is considered one of the most renowned Zuni stoneworkers of the 20th century for his innovative and skillful designs. At a time when most Zuni jewelers worked with traditional themes and materials, Leo experimented and is thought to be one of the first Zuni inlay artists to use decorative elements in his carvings. After serving in the military in World War 2, Leo returned to Zuni Pueblo where he continued to make stone mosaic jewelry as well as work for the BIA as a wildlands firefighter. Because of his friendship with Zuni trader C.G. Wallace, Leo was able to work with the finest turquoise and other high quality stones for his pieces. Wallace would also assign Leos stone pieces to Navajo silversmiths for mounting on silver boxes, finger rings, pendants, and other adornments. Leos first wife, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught Leo many lapidary relief techniques which helped enhance his stone inlay pieces. Leos second wife, Ida Vacit, who was also an inlay artist, finished many of the pieces that Leo left behind after his abrupt death due to a tragic firefighting accident in 1959. Leos pieces, known for their attention to detail, impeccable technique, and innovative style are part of many notable collections including the Heard Museum and the Wheelwright Museum. He is succeeded by his daughter, Veronica Poblano, who is also an award winning Zuni artist.

Bernard Dawahoya (1936-2010) Hopi Overlay Kachina pin collection sterling silver. High quality, guaranteed authentic, collected and never worn with little to no wear. I was careful stacking them for the photos and they went straight into individual bags after the photos. These are a very fine and rare examples of why Bernard Dawahoya is one of the more celebrated Hopi silversmiths. Selling the 10 pins shown as there are no others. None of these have any damage or significant wear, they are al signed as shown. They range from 2.5"-3 1/8" tall each and average 14.7 grams each as the 10 are shown on a scale 147 grams. Hopi artist Bernard Dawahoya was considered by all to be a master silversmith. His bold and clean designs along with the precise matting or texture he worked into the negative areas of this pieces, made his work easily recognizable. His Hopi name was Masaqueva (Wings of the sun). He was born in the second Mesa village of Shungopavi. Not only a master jeweler, but a respected storyteller and a man of great talents. He passed away in 2010. His work is displayed in Museums across the country and in many publications.

40‘s-50‘s Zuni cast silver high grade carved turquoise knifewing pin/necklace. Selling the great pin shown, circa mid 20th century. Approximately 40 years ago the adapted this removable sleeve that slides over the pin to make it a pendant and added this recent turquoise necklace. I should have separated it but it got photographed before I noticed it, so here it is as shown. Measurements in pictures, pin is unmarked. c1940‘s Horace Iule Zuni Knifewing Pin w/snake eye turquoise sterling silver. Great looking and substantial pin with no issues. Weight and measurements in pictures. Unmarked, attributed to Horace Iule, circa mid 20th century. This pin is actually significantly different to most pins attributed to Horace Iule, I have found a pin online in the sold section of a Saks Gallery in Denver, CO that I believe was made by the same hand perhaps at the same time. They attributed it to Eskiose, which is one of the most important historic Navajo Silversmiths, more often referred to as Etsitty Tsosie They dated it to c1930.. I‘m not sure. I‘m guaranteeing it to be solid silver, turquoise, mid 20th century perhaps a little older, and Native American made.

Norman Honie Sr Hopi overlay blue gem turquoise thunderbird pendant/pin sterling. Nice vintage (third quarter of 20th century) pendant, no issues. Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Norman Honie Sr. was born in the 1920s at Hano, First Mesa, Hopi Pueblo in Arizona. He learned his craft at the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild and began making jewelry in the 1960s. He was also a katsina doll carver. He was the recipient of numerous awards including a first place award at the Hopi Show at the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1967. His work is in museum collections and has been published in Arizona Highways (June, 1971). Norman Honie Sr. signed with the sun symbol of the Hopi Crafts Guild on one earring and Honie‘s hallmark of a spider on the other.

Manuel Hoyungowa Hopi Large sterling silver dancer pendant in overlay style. Solid sterling, weight and measurements in pics. Fully functional and attractive vintage piece in good condition with no significant issues, but some expected wear. Manuel Hoyungowa (ca. 19532011) Hopi Tribe was from the village of Hotevilla on Third Mesa and has been an active silversmith at Hopi Pueblo since the 1970s. His hallmark is a strong raincloud. Although he has produced some jewelry with coral and turquoise, more in the style of Navajo work, Hoyungowa is a master silversmith which is evident in his traditional Hopi silver overlay technique jewelry. Hoyungowa actually learned silver overlay technique from Preston Monongye (his uncle and another famous Hopi artisan) and the Institute Of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. More History: The Indian Arts and Crafts Board (a government department) and the Hopi Tribe collaborated on the formation of the Hopi Silvercraft Guild in 1949 and noted Hopi artist Fred Kabotie became the manager. It was then that Hopi overlay jewelry found it acceptance. Hopi overlay technique involves cutting out the desired design in one piece of silver and overlaying that onto another piece that has been incised and oxidized. Polishing is accomplished with steel wool which results in a matte rather than a shiny surface.

Navajo silversmith, Kee Nez, is a member of the Many-Goats clan and is from an artistic family. His mother is a rug weaver and his grandfather was a silversmith, but he credits his award-winning brother, Al Nez, with influencing his style. Kee uses 14K gold and sterling silver to create his stunning handcrafted surface design on bolas, rings, pendants, and earrings.
