c1940‘s Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle set. 3/4" ranger set, unmarked, attributed to Dan Simplicio, likely from the second quarter of the 20th century. The belt fits a 38-41" waist with existing holes. The belt is signed Fred Harvey, which is really cool and likely really rare and possibly collectible in it‘s own right. The belt is old but liikely has some life left in it if cared for. I don‘t really feel like I‘m charging a premium for the leather belt as this ranger set is rare and important, especially with this high grade turquoise which is most likely Lone Mountain. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallaces trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs.

c1960 c-31 Ted Edaakie Zuni Owl sterling channel inlay bolo tie with fancy tips 39" long with no issues, no identifying markings on the silver. Attributed to Theodore Edaakie, pins and bolos in this design have surfaced signed, typically later examples. 48.2 grams Ted Edaakie, who began producing in about 1930. Theodore Edaakie, called Ted Edaakie, had work represented in the C.G.Wallace catalog, the Museum of The American Indian Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of New Mexico and The Heard Museum in Arizona. Edaakie won several awards for his work. The C.G. Wallace catalog also reports the sale of two of his roadrunner pins. In the 1930‘s and 1940‘s Theodore Edaakie was employed as an artist at C. G. Wallace‘s Trading Post at Zuni. Mosaic and channel inlay pieces that Theodore made were collected by Wallace and several were sold at the 1975 Sotheby‘s Auction of Wallace‘s collection. He was one of the famous Edaakie brothers. He was a superb lapidarist as well as silversmith All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. 5 7/8" Wayne & Virginia Quam Zuni 14k/Sterling multi-stone inlay cuff bracelet. Solid 14k gold with just one sheet of sterling on the back. The bezel and all the top part is solid 14k gold (tested) you can clearly see where the thinner plate of sterling is bonded to the back. There is a lot more gold than sterling in the bracelet, I believe the sterling is just there for spiritual/health/traditional reasons, weight and mearements in pics. Wayne (1942-2006) and his wife Virginia (1940- ) were born in Zuni, NM and started making jewelry in the 1960‘s. He learned from his mother, Alice Quam. They were/are award winning smiths and lapidarists and their jewelry is highly collectible. Both he and she are referenced in Schaaf‘s "American Indian Jewelry I and III", Hougart‘s "Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks", Wright‘s "Hallmarks of the Southwest" and Bassman‘s "Zuni Jewelry".

Bev is the daughter of revered Zuni artists Rosalie and Augustine Pinto. Bev continues her parents tradition of inlaid jewelry by producing jewelry in the same style as her elders. As she had learned from her parents she has been a teacher to her two sons Carl Etsate a fetish carver and Todd Etsate as well as her daughter Tracy Bowekaty, a jewelry maker who is also following in her mothers and grandparents paths.
