Descrizione

Nymphenburg Blanc de Chine Allegorical Figure Set. Selling the set, tallest 7.5"
from the third quarter of the 20th century with 5 of Bustelli's Ovidian s
standing on plinths. From 1754 to 1763 Franz Anton Bustelli modeled a set of
small putti at Nymphenburg, representing the Roman s as described by the Latin
poet Ovid. He took a different approach from previous representations of s,
seeing them as smiling, playful children in a Baroque style, with sculptural,
three-dimensional poses that twist and turn. Each figure has to be seen in the
round to be fully appreciated. Each figure is also accompanied by a specific
object or objects that identify which is represented, for example, a wine barrel
and an upraised cup for the of wine, Bacchus. Bustelli's figures of Ovidian s
have been reissued since the early 20th century by the Nymphenburg factory in
Munich as a fitting tribute to the genius of its greatest sculptor.
No cracks, chips, or restorations. I've seen these sell on the secondary marked
for over $300 ea. I don't believe they are in production anymore but heard they
last retailed for close to 1k each.
tw166
