  • Ishmael Soto(1932-2017) Austin Texas Studio Pottery Abstract Vase

Ishmael Soto(1932-2017) Austin Texas Studio Pottery Abstract Vase

    1 in stock

This piece and two more I'm listing are from the Estate of Lael Cater Seagert UTArt Department and later Director of Laa Gloria Art Museum here in Austin so these were likely gifts from Soto as they had signed books from so many Texas Artists that were given to them as gifts. Piece measures 7 5/8" tall x 5.25" wide. No cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing.Below is an excerpt from the artists eulogy.Ishmael Soto, longtime Austin ceramicist and teacher, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 84.“Ishmael’s passing is a loss for us all in the community,” said Sylvia Orozco, director of Mexic-Arte Museum. “He was a great human being, teacher and artist. Ishmael was one of the first, if not the first Mexican-American Austinite to become a professional visual artist.”Artist and teacher Ishmael Soto died Feb. 27 at age 84. Contributed by Tahila MintzSoto won many prizes and was exhibited frequently in group and solo shows.A native Austinite, Soto earned his first degree from the University of Texas and his second from the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. His 57th Annual Potters Show and Sale took place in December 2016. He taught ceramics at UT for seven years — one of the first Hispanics to teach in the art department — then at St. Edward’s University and Austin Community College for a total of more than 30 years..“He was a modest, generous mentor and major inspiration to many artists,” said his widow, Cynthia Leigh. “He taught thousands of students over his lifetime. Many of his students decided to become artists from his encouragement and support. He did not try to mold his students to imitate his work; he encouraged them to follow their own artistic path and draw on their own talents. B26

  • Charles Noke (1858-1941) c1925 Royal Doulton Chang over Sung Flambe Vase

Charles Noke (1858-1941) c1925 Royal Doulton Chang over Sung Flambe Vase

    1 in stock

c1925 Royal Doulton Chang over Sung decorated Flambe Signed by Charles Noke<br>(1858 - 1941); Harry Nixon (1886 - 1955). Large, rare, one of a kind and<br>important. 9.75" 24.5cm tall x 6" 15cm wide. No cracks, chips, restorations or<br>wear. Overall crackle glaze from production. This is likely the most fun and<br>interesting piece of pottery I've owned and I've appreciated art pottery the<br>majority of my life. This piece was entirely decorated with the prunus<br>chinoiserie "Sung" decoration (Iridescent branches and flowers) and flambe glaze<br>then they poured this crazy thick Chang glaze on it and just let it run. I feel<br>this is likely a piece from the very beginning of Chang production in 1925 or<br>even before when they were experimenting as it's a most unusual and extremely<br>labor intensive piece, even the bottom seems like a party. In addition to the<br>painted marks and signatures there is also an impressed Doulton and something<br>else that I just couldn't decide what it was. For international shipment it will<br>be sent Fedex so it will be there in less than a week unless you have an<br>objection.<br>B33

Charles grew up in a one-room log cabin. He recalls his mom<br>washing clothes down in Peter's Creek to make ends meet.<br><br>After high school, he joined the Air Force and worked as a trouble shooter for<br>ing & navigational equipment.<br><br>Later, Charles married his wife Mary and began a family of four children--3 boys<br>and a girl.<br><br>In 1961, they began a successful hair salon which started his artistic<br>endeavors.<br><br>In May of 1970, Charles went to The Art Institute and spent the day there to<br>watch glass blowing. He came home that day and told his wife that he was going<br>to be a glass blower and started building a furnace in the back yard.<br><br>In November of 1970, Charles began his delve into the world of art glass.<br><br>By January of 1972, Charles met up with the Tiffany expert Lillian Nassau. She<br>had insight that Charles would become great one day. Lillian bought all of<br>Charles' glass for the first five years which enabled him to transition from his<br>hair salon into the world of art glass. Little did anyone else realize fifty<br>years later Charles would still be creating beautiful, one of a kind works of<br>glass art along with his children.<br><br>Throughout the years, Charles' glass continued to evolve from simple<br>paperweights to Vases, Bowls, Flower Forms, Persian Water Sprinklers, Pendant<br>Lighting, Lamps, and Chandeliers. His designs also evolved from a molten blob<br>made from melted pop bottles in his backyard into the most beautiful creations<br>in the world today. Charles was completely self-taught, down to his own formulas<br>that create the color of his glass.<br><br>Charles had a strong determination to succeed yet had one of the most humble<br>natures of anyone that you would ever meet. He was a true man of God. Charles<br>attributed his success with his strong faith. He always prayed that the Lord<br>would continue to bless him and his family with making beautiful glass each day.<br><br>Today, Charles is world-renowned for the most beautiful designs in art, like the<br>'Multi Flora' and 'Cypriot' styles. Large 1920's Muller Frères Cameo Glass Landscape vase. 12" tall x 5.25" wide<br>with no cracks, chips, or restorations. tw108<br><br>Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by cameo glass engraving or<br>etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce<br>designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored<br>background. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC,<br>where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo<br>style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and<br>agate. Glass allowed consistent and predictable colored layers, even for round<br>objects.<br><br>From the mid-19th century there was a revival of cameo glass, suited equally to<br>Neo-Grec taste and the French Art Nouveau practiced by Émile Gallé. Cameo glass<br>is still produced today.<br><br>Muller Frères (Co.) was an esteemed French glassmaking company based in<br>Luneville, France, famous for its Art Nouveau vases, lampshades, and<br>chandeliers, which often incorporate layered and colored glass. Their workshop<br>was established by Henri Muller and his brothers in 1895 after they trained with<br>Émile Gallé—who would retain a grudge against Muller for setting up a rival<br>enterprise. In 1910, the company began making lamps in association with Chapelle<br>and, at its height, employed around 300 workers. Production was stopped in 1933<br>and the factory closed three years later, a victim of the Great Depression.

This<br>vase is a very rich gold Aurene that was difficult to capture in the pics.<br><br>Steuben Glass Works<br><br>Steuben Glass is an American art glass manufacturer, founded in the summer of<br>1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York, which is in<br>Steuben County, from which the company name was derived. Hawkes was the owner of<br>the largest cut glass firm then operating in Corning. Carder was an Englishman<br>(born September 18, 1863) who had many years' experience designing glass for<br>Stevens and Williams in England. Hawkes purchased the glass blanks for his<br>cutting shop from many sources and eventually wanted to start a factory to make<br>the blanks himself. Hawkes convinced Carder to come to Corning and manage such a<br>factory. Carder, who had been passed over for promotion at Stevens and Williams,<br>consented to do so.<br><br>In 1918, Steuben was acquired by Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben<br>Division.<br><br>In July 2008, Steuben was sold by Corning Incorporated for an undisclosed price<br>to Schottenstein Stores,[2] which also owns 51% of Retail Ventures, a holding<br>company for DSW, Filene's Basement, and formerly Value City Department Stores;<br>Value City Furniture, which changed its name to American Signature Furniture;<br>15% of American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB Capital Group, some 50<br>shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes, furniture and crystal.<br><br>On September 15, 2011, Schottenstein announced it was shutting down Steuben's<br>Corning factory and Manhattan store, ending the company's 108-year history. Soon<br>after, Corning Incorporated repurchased the Steuben brand. In early 2014, The<br>Corning Museum of Glass announced that it would work with independent<br>contractors to reproduce Steuben using a new, lead-free formula and their<br>classic leaded crystal.<br><br>Carder period (1903-1932)<br>Steuben Glass Works started operation in October 1903. Carder produced blanks<br>for Hawkes and also began producing cut glass himself. Carder's great love was<br>colored glass and had been instrumental in the reintroduction of colored glass<br>while at Stevens and Williams. When Steuben's success at producing blanks for<br>Hawkes became assured, Carder began to experiment with colored glass and<br>continued experiments that were started in England. He soon perfected Gold<br>Aurene which was similar to iridescent art glass that was being produced by<br>Tiffany and others. Gold Aurene was followed by a wide range of colored art<br>glass that eventually was produced in more than 7,000 shapes and 140 colors.<br><br>Steuben Glass Works continued to produce glass of all sorts until World War I.<br>At that time war time restrictions made it impossible for Steuben to acquire the<br>materials needed to continue manufacture. The company was subsequently sold to<br>Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben Division. Carder continued as<br>Division manager without any real change in the company's operation except that<br>he now had reporting responsibilities to Corning Glass Works' management.<br>Corning's management tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to limit the articles that<br>Steuben made to only the most popular. Production continued until about 1932.<br><br>In 1932, there was a major change in Steuben management. The nationwide<br>depression had limited the sale of Steuben and there was a lessening of public<br>interest in colored glass. In February 1932, John MacKay was appointed to<br>Carder's position. Carder became Art Director for Corning Glass Works. Steuben<br>then produced primarily colorless art glass.<br><br>Steuben still produced colored art glass, but mostly to fill special orders. A<br>few new colors were added after Carder transitioned into his new role with<br>Corning Glass Works, but the last known sale for colored art glass by Steuben<br>was in 1943<br>B70

Early Van Briggle Cabinet vase. Teens-20's 4" tall with no cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing. tw122Van Briggle Art Pottery was at the time of its demise the oldest continuously operating art pottery in the United States, having been established in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1901 by Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Artus had a significant impact on the Art Nouveau movement in the United States, and his pottery is foundational to American Art Pottery. The Art Nouveau style favored by its founders continues to influence the pottery's designs. Artus Van Briggle settled in Colorado Springs in 1899 after establishing himself as a notable artist with the Rookwood Pottery of Ohio. With Anne Louise (née Gregory), his new wife, Artus began exploring the Art Nouveau style in their pottery creations, drawing awards and accolades from the American and European art communities. Although he was a talented painter who had displayed and won awards in Europe, from 1899 until his death Artus devoted himself almost exclusively to the craft and art of pottery. Van Briggle's Art Nouveau designs and distinctive matte glazes were awarded high honors from prestigious sources, including the Paris Salon, the Saint Louis Exposition, the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, and the American Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Boston. The Van Briggle Pottery Studio closed in spring 2012Artus Van Briggle in 1900. Born to artistic parents on March 21, 1869, Artus Van Briggle had an early introduction to painting using materials found about the home. The Van Briggle family lived in Ohio, one of America's hotbeds of ceramic design. At the age of 17 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he decorated china dolls at the Arnold Fairyland Doll Store, while attending his early art studies at the Cincinnati Art School. After a stint at the Avon Pottery where he was introduced to the ceramic arts, Artus took a job at Rookwood Pottery; there he excelled at hand-painting designs. His skill and talent were recognized by Rookwood founder, Maria Storer, who became his benefactor, even sending him to France to study art at the Académie Julian in Paris. In Europe, he was exposed to styles of art and became infatuated with an early matte glaze from the Chinese Ming Dynasty; a type that was lost to history. Artus also met his future wife, fellow American student Anne Lawrence Gregory, an accomplished artist in her own right. Finishing their Paris studies in 1896, they returned to America. Artus resumed his work at Rookwood and also started sculpting and experimented with recreating the lost Ming Dynasty glazes.Perfecting the distinctive dull or matte glaze In 1899, struggling with health issues due to tuberculosis, Artus left Rookwood and moved to the drier air of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon befriending the Holmes family of Chico Basin, he stayed at the HOP Ranch during the summers of 1899, 1900, and 1901 to reduce work stress and regain strength while pursuing his own styles of pottery, centered around the Art Nouveau movement. He continued his research on the ancient matte glazes that fascinated him in Paris. After two years of trials and experiments a matte glaze was perfected. One of the matte glazes perfected by Artus was the matte blue glaze, based on an ancient Chinese process that had long been lost to history.Artus opened Van Briggle Pottery in 1901 and was joined by Anne Gregory, who took a position as a high school art teacher in Colorado Springs. In 1903, Artus Van Briggle was appointed First Director of the Department of Art and Design in Colorado College, succeeding Louis Soutter, a Swiss artist (born in Geneva, Switzerland) he met in Paris in 1895.In 1902, Anne and Artus were married, and she devoted herself to their pottery; she created designs and collaborated in all aspects of the enterprise with her husband. Late 1902 brought Van Briggle awards for his glazes and designs in Art Nouveau from the prestigious Paris Salon; he was now an accepted artist. During their early years, Artus and Ann established hundreds of Art Nouveau styles of pottery under the Van Briggle name. The Despondency vase won Van Briggle wide acclaim and first place at the Paris Salon in 1903. A display at the 1904 Centennial Exhibit in St. Louis won Van Briggle more awards and greater international fame. Van Briggle Memorial Pottery Pottery loses its founder Artus Van Briggle died in July 1904, at the age of 35. Anne continued the pottery using the forms created by Artus as a foundation and adding more designs of her own. In 1907, Anne and pottery stockholder and city-founder William Jackson Palmer began construction on a new pottery on Uintah Street. The Van Briggle Memorial Pottery — designed by Dutch architect Nicholas Van den Arend — was opened in 1908 and stands today as an historic landmark noted for its architecture and use of ceramics in the facade.Having remarried in 1908, Anne Louise Gregory Ritter leased the pottery in 1912 to Edmund deForest Curtis, who ran it until 1916. She sold the company in 1922 to J.F. and I.H. Lewis and moved to Denver the following year, where she would concentrate on painting and where she remained until her death in 1929. In her absence, the pottery fell under financial hardships and was sold at sheriff's auction; later it was re-sold, once more becoming the property of Mr. Curtis.Surviving disaster and war The pottery was sold twice more in the ensuing decade and survived a fire in 1919 that gutted the interior but left the brick shell and kilns. New owners I.F. and J.H. Lewis took the opportunity to modernize and expand the facility beginning in 1920 and stabilized the production and financial aspects of the pottery for the first time. Despite damage from the flood of 1935—the most destructive flood in Colorado Springs history — that destroyed much of the company's records and molds, the pottery continued to enjoy success up to World War II, when they closed for approximately three years as the United States focused its resources on the war effort. With the increase of interstate travel in the United States a freeway was planned in 1953 for Colorado Springs which J.H. Lewis estimated would run through the Memorial Plant site. Although the freeway eventually was planned to avoid destroying the historic pottery, Mr. Lewis nonetheless put into action plans to relocate the pottery to a higher-traffic area of Colorado Springs. In 1955, Mr. Lewis and Clem Hull brought a new facility on line at a renovated railroad roundhouse on Midland Road. The new facility, known as the Midland Plant, had a smaller capacity but enjoyed quick success due to its location on the main highway to the Garden of the Gods and other tourist locations. In 1968, Mr. Lewis sold the Memorial Plant to Colorado College, and it fell into disrepair for the ensuing 40 years, being used variously as offices and storage.

The aquarium<br>effect is significantly enhanced by the reflection of the flashed pattern on the<br>inner walls of the glass vase.Dimensions: 4.75 tal, 6 pounds. Condition: Very<br>good. No chips, cracks or repairs. Wear consistent with age; some light<br>scratches mainly on base as it's very heavy. Signature: "Orrefors Graal vr 310t<br>Edward Hald" script on the base.<br><br>A Note About the Artist: Edward Hald (1883-1980) trained as an architect and<br>painter. He studied in Dresden, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Paris. His time in<br>Copenhagen included work under Johan Rohde; in Paris he worked under Matisse. In<br>1917, Hald worked briefly at Rorstrand, and then began his long association with<br>Orrefors. At the time Edward Hald joined Orrefors in 1917, the early experiments<br>of Simon Gate and the master glassblower, Knudt Bergkvist, for the Graal<br>technique were still evolving. The Graal technique used acid etching or wheel<br>carving to create thin designs in relief on the surface of multilayer, glass<br>blanks. The carved blanks were then heated to a molten state by glassblowers,<br>encased with an additional layer of clear glass to entrap the design, and<br>finally worked with blowing to a finished state. The result was literally,<br>"painting within the glass".Edward Hald created some of the earliest designs to<br>use the Graal method. He continued to work in Graal throughout his long career,<br>including the heavy "Fish Graal" pieces first shown in 1937. Also "Slip Graal"<br>and "Aqua Graal" were favored techniques. Hald also designed many important<br>engraved pieces such as the "Fireworks" bowl. He retired from Orrefors in 1978.

Two of the products that were promoted were Niloak Pottery from Benton and Camark Pottery from Camden. George Rumrill's position as a founder and promoter of the Arkansas Products Company gave him access to many of the two pottery's catalogs and products. At some point in time, the Arkansas Products Company came to pass and George Rumrill decided to create his own pottery company. Since he had no facilities in which to make pottery, he contacted existing pottery companies to create his line of pottery. RumRill's most popular designs were made by Red Wing Stoneware Company from 1933-1936 and Red Wing Potteries from 1936-1938. Shawnee produced RumRill Pottery in 1938 for a short time. Then Florence and Gonder potteries produced RumRill until his death in 1942.George Rumrill created many of his own designs. It is interesting to note, however, that there are a number of RumRill pieces that are known Camark shapes. With George Rumrill's access to the Camark catalogs and products, this should be no surprise. There are also RumRill pieces that were made from Red Wing molds. Some of RumRill's designs were produced throughout RumRill's existence by all of the contracting pottery companies.
