sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Tomasita Montoya(1899-1978) San Juan Pueblo pottery vessel
Tomasita Montoya(1899-1978) San Juan Pueblo pottery vessel 5" wide x 3.75" tall, no damage or restorations, very minor exterior wear. Comes with tag from when it was last purchased. Tomasita Montoya was one of the original 7 San Juan potters who revived the art form in the 1930’s. Her daughters Rosita de Herrera and Dominguita Herrera learned to make pottery from her. The Pueblo had a wonderful history of pottery making, but by about 1890 there were no potters left. In 1930 Regina Cata organized a pottery study group at San Juan Pueblo with the intent of revitalizing pottery production. The group studied ancient potsherds of wares made at San Juan in earlier times and selected Potsuwi‘i Incised Ware (1450-1500) as a basis for a contemporary pottery type. By the late 1930s, further development resulted in deeply-carved polychrome wares, and incised wares, both of which are still being produced today. Tomasita was especially known for her incised red ware jars, bowls, and vases. The decoration on these vessels was primarily fine line geometric hatching. On occasion she utilized micaceous clay, adding some texture and sparkle to the geometric elements. Tomasita also made deeply carved polychrome pieces which included designs of clouds, kiva steps, and plants.

Albert & Josephine Vigil worked together on their pottery. They began making pottery in 1945. Josephine made the pottery and Albert painted the designs. Albert Vigil (1927-2009) was a nephew of Maria Martinez. He was also the son of noted San Ildefonso painter Romando Vigil, one of the members of the San Ildefonso School of watercolor artists and also know for his work with Walt Disney Studios. Josephine Cordova Vigil (1927-2001) was from Taos Pueblo and she moved to San Ildefonso when she married Albert. Josephine learned pottery making by watching her aunts-in-law Maria Martinez, and Maria’s sister Clara Montoya, who are considered San Ildefonso Pottery Matriarchs. Maria Martinez taught Josephine how to coil-shape the clay and Clara Montoya taught her how to polish the pottery before it was designed or painted. They began making pottery in 1945. Josephine and Albert used the traditional methods of hand-coil, polishing, and traditionally open fired pottery.

Sz 6 Paul Livingston Navajo Sterling and turquoise ring, clean with no issues.
26.1 grams.

PAUL LIVINGSTON
Paul Livingston was born in 1954 and has spent his entire life on the Navajo
Church Rock Reservation, where he grew up watching with fascination as his
silversmith Uncle crafted raw metal and
stone into beautiful jewelry. Through trial and error and a great deal of help
from his Uncle, Paul became an accomplished young jewelry maker.

By the time he was twenty-two he was ready to launch himself full time into
silversmithing. Paul Livingstonis an acclaimed Navajo silversmith who favors
substance in his metal work and high-quality, natural stones in all his
settings.

Today, nearly forty years later, Paul is a nationally known and collected
jewelry artist. He is particularly known for a style of jewelry most
silversmiths shy away from a technique known as ‘cluster and row work’ where
multiple tiny stones are used together to form a delicate, colorful designs in
jewelry. Paul is happy to work with the little stones, even the tiny round
“snake eye” ones and is renowned for how exquisitely aligned the stone clusters
and rows of stones are on his pieces.

Even at his age Paul continues to experiment with new jewelry techniques and
design styles. He especially enjoys working unusual textures created on metals
and will often incorporate a new surface
finish or other design application to see if these changes might enhance the
jewelry’s appearance and appeal. Though his forte has always been more
traditional even vintage looking Navajo style jewelry, his
contemporary designs are also in high demand. Paul Livingston creates beautiful
jewelry using stones that aren’t often found in Native American jewelry. The
intricate ‘saw work designs’ of his pieces are especially difficult to achieve
but so very visually appealing in Paul’s finished work.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. 1940's Hobe Sterling Modernist brooch with flowers 1 13/16" wide with no damage
13.9 grams.

Hobé Cie was founded in 1887 by goldsmith Jacques Hobé, but when costume-jewelry
collectors think of Hobé, they picture the tasselled and beaded necklaces made
by Jacques’ son, William, who established an American offshoot of the company in
1927. That put Hobé at the beginning of the American costume-jewelry boom
between the two world wars.

In fact, some scholars believe that Hobé actually had a hand in the phrase
“costume jewelry” itself. After the younger Hobé landed in New York, but before
he started his company, one of the his first assignments was to make costumes
and jewelry for the "Ziegfeld Follies." According to some historians, Florenz
Ziegfeld described the jewelry that accompanied Hobé’s costumes as costume
jewelry.

Hobé’s showbiz origins served the company well. By the 1940s and ’50s, Hollywood
stars such as Bette Davis and Ava Gardner were wearing Hobé. Especially prized
today are the floral pins of that era, which featured tight clusters of vermeil
petals. Earlier Hobé pieces that remain popular with collectors include
filigreed bracelets and pins, some of which featured Victorian-style portraits
or Japanese netsuke-like figures as focal points.

These are white porcelain, not the cream shown in the pic.

The term "Dresden porcelain" refers more to an artistic movement than a
particular line of figurines or dinnerware. Several decorating studios emerged
in this Saxony capital in response to the rise of "Romanticism" during the 19th
century. Dresden was an important center of this artistic, cultural and
intellectual movement, which attracted painters, sculptors, poets, philosophers
and porcelain decorators alike. In 1883, in response to the exciting
developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators
registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular "Dresden
style" was born.
