Signed DPS KC 2016, My guess is this was made for a club of some sort as he also made toothpicks for the Toothpick collectors clubs for certain years. No damage, very special limited production item with no damage. 2.75" tall David Salazar has been a glassblower and designer for over 50 years. He began in 1972 at Lundberg Studios in Davenport, California. Using new techniques to decorate glass, he eventually became their chief designer. Some of his pieces during this period were exhibited at the Corning Museum of Glass. It was during this time that he became associated with Larry Selman, one of the foremost paperweight dealers in the world. David’s work has been featured in many of Selman’s catalogues, as well as books for the paperweight collector. David also exhibited pieces at the Tiffany Exhibit for the Museum of Art in Chicago. In 1981, David left Lundberg’s to form his own studio. David’s work in miniatures led to doing marbles in flower and sea life patterns, as well as traditional swirls. His Angelfish marble was featured in the April 1988 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine. Today, his marbles are some of his most popular items, and he carries over 30 different kinds. John Bryan (1897-1982) MCM Sterling Enamel Pin. Great design, no damage or detectable wear. 1 5/8" wide 10.9 grams John William Bryan was born in 1897 in North Carolina. He was a journalist and teacher in New York for a time, but returned to Asheville, North Carolina in the 1950's to start jewelry crafting. It is not understood how he moved from one profession to the next. His jewelry was mostly abstract in design, as was most of the other hand crafted jewelry of the time. He worked in sterling silver and enamel, as far as is known. His work was sold mostly in the Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild located in Asheville, North Carolina, which had been established in the 1930's to educate the region and arts community on the importance of craft and its ability to impact the local creative economy. John Bryan died in 1982 in North Carolina.

Kensington Art Tile Newport, Kentucky 1885 - 1895 Tile Heritage Collection Gift of Bob Smyth In 1881 the Hatt brothers, Arthur and Otto, established a tile works at Elm and Lowell Streets in Newport, Kentucky. Their company, Hatt & Hatt, was taken over by a group of investors in 1885 and renamed the Kensington Art Tile Company. During its short tenure as a manufacturer of dust-pressed art tiles, the combination of portraits and floral interpretations was most impressive due to the artistic talents of Herman Mueller and Mary Louise McLaughlin, among others. From an 1891 published report in “Illustrated Cincinnati” (courtesy of the Tile Heritage Library): “The main building is a substantial brick structure, three stories and basement in height and 40 by 200 feet in dimensions. c1880 Robbins Clark & Biddle 14k gold retractable pendant physician's pencil,<br>just over 3.5" closed with jump ring, 4 7/8" fully extended with jump ring.<br>Fully functional with no issues. Unmarked but acid tested by me in multiple<br>places by me to be 14k gold with no signs or evidence of it being plated.<br>Retailer's Name on one side and engraved Doctor's name on the other. 18.6 grams.<br>Without damaging this I cannot be 100% sure that it is not gold filled but as I<br>stated there is no evidence that it's plated, no wear, and it tests strong for<br>14k in multiple places but fades at 18k, typically gold filled items were more<br>often 12k so wouldn't test at 14k so I believe it's solid gold. Some of the<br>inner mechanisms will be another metal as they are durable than gold. I have<br>disassembled different models of these from the same era before and they are<br>typically 50-75% gold with a small amount of steel or brass items for the<br>mechanism. As shown in the last pic, the inner shaft that holds the pencil is<br>brass.<br><br>Robbins, Clark & Biddle of 1124 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. It was a<br>jewelry store that also sold sterling and plated wares, imported items, clocks,<br>watches, bronzes, "fancy goods in gilt, leather wood and crystal", which<br>included jardiniers, ink stands, vases, jewel cases, work boxes and baskets,<br>thermometers and barometers, vinaigrettes and card cases.<br><br>Samuel Biddle is the Biddle of Bailey, Banks & Biddle. He apprenticed with<br>Thomas C. Garrett 1857, took over his business at some point after 1860 as Clark<br>& Biddle. That became Robbins, Clark & Biddle (at least by 1876; they're in the<br>catalog for the Centennial exhibition) and then in 1878 the Bailey, Banks &<br>Biddle we know today. I've seen items by other makers (including Krider)<br>retailed by Clark & Biddle, but it seems likely they also made some items, at<br>least early on.

He likes to incorporate humor into his work, as can be seen in his<br>wonderful lizard pins that are designed to perch on the wearer's shoulder, one<br>of his unique designs.<br><br>Growing up in Albuquerque, away from his father's Zuni Pueblo and his mother's<br>Jicarilla Apache Reservation, Allenroy was not always interested in his native<br>heritage, much less in making jewelry. In high school, he became interested in<br>fancy dancing, one of his favorite activities through today. At this same time,<br>his father took up jewelry making to support their family after being disabled<br>in an accident, but it still did not interest Allenroy. Instead, he earned a<br>degree in technical engineering. It was not until his father died several years<br>later, when his mother gave him his father's tools, that Allenroy realized this<br>was his inheritance and heritage. Today he considers his father to be his<br>strongest inspiration.<br><br>This feeling was reinforced one time when he was having a creative block.
