Retired James Avery 14k gold angel earrings. No damage or detectable wear 7/16" x 2.6 grams.James Avery founded his company in 1954, initially crafting jewelry in a two-car garage in Kerrville, Texas, with just $250 and a desire to create lasting value for others. Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007, 53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul.Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting relationships with each person who connected with his designs.

    Konstantino 18k/Sterling Clio Collection Citron hoop earrings. 1 1/8" x .25"
wide with no issues, guaranteed authentic Konstantino and solid 18k gold and
sterling. 12.7 grams, uncommon retired design.

4,000 BC
In the heart of the Mediterranean, generations of alchemists, artisans and
goldsmiths explored the depths of earth's most valued materials. Gold, silver,
bronze and precious stones inspired the creation of fine jewelry, a creative
expression of human intelligence.
Through the ages, Greek goldsmiths have estab- lished an exceptionally unique
presence in the history of fine jewelry, evident across the Mediterra- nean,
spanning through the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine eras of
Greece. The indestructible nature of fine jewelry exudes -like qualities, a
timelessness that surpasses the ages of style and trend. The Konstantino style
emerged from the roots of these traditions, paving the way for its own unique
style, one re-defining the blueprint of the classical Greek identity.

1958: Birth of a legend
Konstantino was born in Filiadona, a small village outside Athens where the
Ancient city of Melitea once stood. There he watched his father closely as he
worked on the farm, building machines and tools of his own. Here Konstantino
developed a great appre- ciation for the art of hand craftsmanship.

1978: A musical influence
Following his love for music, the young Konstantino became a disc jockey in the
city of Athens, playing everything from Carlos Santana to Lou Reed. These icons
and many more, inspired a stylistic fluidity that introduced an essence of glam
rock to the scene. By way of music, Konstantino began curating his own aesthetic
identity, as a creative mind and style icon. Where, these legends continue to
influence the rule breaking spirit that drives the design team at Konstantino to
this day.
about-image-4
1983: Jewelry saved my life
Konstantino fled the music scene of Athens in search of an oasis, he took a trip
to the island of Hydra where he lived for the next 15 years. It was on this
magical island, where Konstantino fell in love with jewelry. He began collecting
and curating jewelry, whereby in 1988 the first Konstantino store opened.

1991: Annette
Hydra is not only the birthplace of Konstantinos love for Jewelry but was also
where he met his soon to be wife and creative partner, Annette. Together, from
the ground up, Konstantino Jewelry soon estab- lished its presence in the US and
global market.

1998: Global Impact
As the admiration and craze for Konstantino spread, the dream continued to grow,
where now our designs can be found in 10 countries globally. With the addition
of a longstanding presence in Neimans, Sax, etc. etc. Konstantino is proud to
represent an evolution of the Greek style to the world of fine jewel- ry lovers.

2016: A Family Future
Konstantino and Annette’s children, Julian and Phaedra joined the team, further
continuing the legacy of love, risk, and passion for gold smithery and design.
This new generation leads with humility, knowledge and a natural instinct for
the dynamic of the Konstantino brand. Preserving the core philoso- phies of the
brand and expanding on its already established style, is a challenge that’s been
taken on with confidence.

One earrling with slight crazing in the
enamel on the edge, I believe it happened in initial firing rather than damage
later. Earrings 1" long, pin 1 5/8" wide. 12.6 grams total.

John William Bryan was born in 1897 in North Carolina. He was a journalist and
teacher in New York for a time, but returned to Asheville, North Carolina in the
1950's to start jewelry crafting. It is not understood how he moved from one
profession to the next. His jewelry was mostly abstract in design, as was most
of the other hand crafted jewelry of the time. He worked in sterling silver and
enamel, as far as is known. His work was sold mostly in the Southern Highlands
Handicraft Guild located in Asheville, North Carolina, which had been
established in the 1930's to educate the region and arts community on the
importance of craft and its ability to impact the local creative economy. John
Bryan died in 1982 in North Carolina.

    1 in stock

c1960 MCM Matisse Renoir Enamel Clip on earrings set. Unused condition, they
were tucked away in a box when I found them. 1 3/16" wide.

HISTORY OF MATISSE RENOIR VINTAGE JEWELRY
Matisse jewelry and Renoir jewelry are two separate lines housed under the same
umbrella. They first came into the market during the mid-20th century. Both
vintage jewelry lines used solid copper, which was once again available during
the post-World War II years.

Arts and Crafts Movement Influences
From the 1890s, and extending through several decades, the Arts and Crafts
Movement influenced several United States decorative art styles, including
jewelry making. The movement’s enthusiasts believed in a strong connection
between the artist and their handcrafted work.

First and foremost, Arts and Crafts artisans emphasized the use of top-tier
materials and functional designs.

For example, jewelry makers, like Matisse Renoir, insisted on using solid copper
rather than a copper-coated base metal. The artisans didn’t compromise on this
basic tenet. This was true whether they made a copper bracelet and matching
earrings or a striking copper brooch and clip-on earrings.

Due to metal purification advances, jewelry makers were able to access
higher-quality raw copper materials.

And, improved knowledge of copper’s properties enabled artisans to manipulate
the copper better, producing intricate designs.

In particular, Arts and Crafts-inspired jewelry often features nature images,
such as leaves and berries. A Matisse green enamel leaf brooch is a good example
of this nature-themed motif.

American Mid Century Designers’ Creative Inspirations
The Arts and Crafts Movement certainly influenced 1940s and 1950s jewelry
designers. Many mid-century modern designers incorporated abstraction and
surrealism into their pieces. And, numerous items display biomorphism, or shapes
that bear a resemblance to organic forms.

The bold copper motifs appealed to forward-thinking women who no longer wanted
to wear their mother’s or grandmother’s understated jewelry. For these ladies, a
copper choker, cuff bracelet, or Nefertiti necklace made the perfect accessory
for a night on the town.

Renowned Mid-Century Costume Jewelry Houses
During the post-World War II years, copper was a striking base material for
different jewelry genres. Deco, Native American, and modernist designs
prominently showcased this versatile metal.

Numerous costume jewelry manufacturers jumped on the copper jewelry bandwagon,
each introducing its own line of jewelry accessories. Copper is an extremely
adaptable metal. Not surprisingly, specialized copper jewelry makers understood
its properties best.

As a result, several renowned manufacturers produced most of the highest-quality
vintage jewelry available today. Matisse Renoir copper pieces carry a notable
pedigree. In addition, copper jewelry by Bell Trading Co., Francisco Rebajes,
and Gret Barkin remains very collectible.

Matisse Renoir Copper Jewelry Origins
In 1945, Jerry Fels, a Brooklyn, New York native, moved to California.
Previously a fighter pilot in World War II, Fels had cultivated his design,
painting, and sculpture talents at New York’s National Academy of Design. In
1946, a new jewelry style began to take the United States by storm, and Fels was
at the forefront of it.

Upon his arrival in the Los Angeles area, Fels and his brother-in-law Kurt
Freiler teamed up to create “Renoir of Hollywood.” The two later changed the
name to “Renoir of California,” then to “Hand Made Renoir of California,” before
finally settling on “Renoir.” Renoir specialized in creating copper jewelry that
incorporated bold geometric forms.

Not content to rest on his laurels, Fels launched “Matisse Ltd.” in 1952.
Matisse (which later became part of the Renoir jewelry business) also produced
finely crafted copper jewelry. Matisse’s decorative enameled embellishments set
it apart from Renoir.

From the mid-1950s until 1960, Renoir also marketed a third jewelry line called
“Sauteur Sterling Silver Jewelry.” The Sauteur pieces are much less common than
the companies’ copper jewelry items.

Renoir: A Jewelry Industry Innovator
Renoir was an innovator in the jewelry industry. Besides being at the forefront
of a jewelry style revolution, Renoir jewelry displayed three distinctive
product finishes that set it apart from its competitors. The first finish is the
“Copron” coating, which minimizes tarnishes from fingerprint oils.

Some Renoir jewelry also contains a corrosion-inhibiting shiny lacquer finish
that Fels obtained from an Air Force chemist friend. Unfortunately, Fels didn’t
note the formula, and the company’s chemists couldn’t successfully re-create it.

Finally, the third finish is the shadow. Some modernist jewelry makers
exaggerated their soldered copper marks by adding a black shadowing effect
around the soldered area. Collectors who buy these pieces are advised not to
polish the area to avoid eliminating the shadow.

The Renoir jewelry fabrication facility also pioneered three other innovations.
First, skilled machinists handled all the pre-production prep work. This left
the artisans free to finish, brush, and polish each piece by hand. As a result,
the jewelry attained a handcrafted appearance.

The Renoir shop area benefited from a complicated ventilation system that
prevented workers from breathing dangerous fumes. And, Fels and Freiler often
hired disabled and minority workers, a very uncommon practice during the 1940s
and 1950s. Matisse’s Curtis Tann was a highly respected African American enamel
artist of the era.

Matisse Renoir Ceases Production
Three unfortunate events collectively led to the end of Matisse and Renoir
jewelry production. During the early 1960s, jewelry sales were strong, and the
companies expanded their production facilities.

Then, American jewelry tastes began to change, and the demand for bold geometric
jewelry waned. At the same time, Matisse and Renoir were frequently mounting
expensive legal defenses against cheap copycat manufacturers.

Finally, the companies faced constant problems with a popular (and troublesome)
enamel design. High rejection levels led to massive losses, and finally, the two
companies went bankrupt and closed in 1964.

Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful
and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007,
53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down
as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul.

Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself
and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief
of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and
gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he
could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From
writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting
relationships with each person who connected with his designs.
