Mark Chee (1914-1981) Navajo Silver Pin with turquoise
Mark Chee (1914-1981) Silver Pin with turquoise 1 5/8" wide x 1.25" tall x 13.1 grams. 100% guaranteed authentic with no issues. Very few Mark Chee pins have made it to the secondary market.

Mark Chee (1914-1981) Biography
Navajo artist, Mark Chee is among the earliest southwest silversmiths. Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver. He was born in Lukachukai, Arizona around 1900 and was sent to government school at Fort Defiance (a United States government practice during that time) from the age of 10 to the 11thgrade. He is the elder brother of Joe Chee.

He was active during the 1930s through ‘60s. He specialized in heavy silver in old style designs. He began polishing silver in Julius Gans’ Southwest Art and Crafts shop in Santa Fe for $5.00 a week. He then bought a few tools and used them all his life. He quickly became an accomplished silversmith and was hired as a bench smith at Frank Patania’s Thunderbird Shop and later at Al Packard’s shop on the Santa Fe Plaza. He was also a bench-smith for the Wooden Indian at Embudo, New Mexico.

His hallmark is a stamp of a bird with his last name in the body in Gothic print. There are several versions of this mark but rather than being a separate stamp they may be due to the angle of his strike.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Sorry but my jewelry is
stored in a secure location and cannot be accessed for more pictures, videos, or
measurements until sold. If you look at pictures/description your question
should be answered. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

NUMEROUS award winner Navajo artist Harry Morgan (1947-2008) was a 5th
generation Navajo silversmith who'll always be remembered for his traditional
"Vintage Revival-Old Pawn" style jewelry that had these gleaming sterling
vintage looking darkened finishings that were made in a classic old style Navajo
design..The beauty he gave the sterling was so warm that it brought out the
metal's maximum luster..Harry once said "That's the way old style jewelry should
look," he said.. "When silver is all shined up it hides all of the intricate
detail in the stamp work and the bezels. This older style is what I grew up with
and what I love."

Although it was his mother who inspired him to create this style of jewelry that
had that old Navajo look,it was Harry however who was the 1st to bring this
style to the forefront of the industry..Paving the way for others like his
brother-in-law Kirk Smith who then followed in Harry's footsteps & with Kirk's
connection with other artists, they then followed in Kirk's footsteps. Now this
is the dominant style amongst most Navajo artists & you see this old pawn style
darkened finishing everywhere..Kirks name will always be associated with Harry's
& vise versa.

if you've ever wondered why most Navajo pieces have that old style look &
finishing where many of you can't tell if the piece is new or old anymore,it was
this man who we can give the credit to for bringing a style of jewelry that we
now see everywhere. He lived to see his jewelry being exhibited at the Heard
Museum a year before his death..

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what
it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings
photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if
the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is
shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Retired James Avery sunflower brooch in sterling pin
Retired James Avery sunflower brooch in sterling.. No issues, weight and
measurements in pics. I cannot provide any additional measurements, videos, or
pictures that aren't provided as my jewelry is stored at a separate secure
location until it ships. Thank you so much for taking the time to look and your
consideration.

anderascoll
James Avery founded his company in 1954, initially crafting jewelry in a two-car
garage in Kerrville, Texas, with just $250 and a desire to create lasting value
for others. Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful
and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007,
53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down
as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul.
Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself
and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief
of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and
gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he
could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From
writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting
relationships with each person who connected with his designs.

Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 Overlay silver pins (2)
Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 Overlay silver pins (2) Largest 2", 18.9 grams total weight.

Navajo Overlay Artist Willie Yazzie

After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other
silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not
Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at
Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941.
The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs
and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders
Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay
pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres
designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper
advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo
Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.

However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie
Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.

Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and
archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in
February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession,
lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie
Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the
artist.

According to Social Security records, Willie A. Yazzie was born at Chinle,
Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post
in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no
later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have
included his gourd dipper hallmark. His designs often incorporated animal
figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He
never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs.

In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for
a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk
recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde
in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie
created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark
depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his
gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.

Willie A. Yazzie died in 1999, but his family, including his widow, daughter and
Willie Jr continue the tradition of Willie’s overlay work. Willie Jr said that
his sister has most of their father’s tools and stamps, and that she still uses
the gourd dipper mark. Willie uses mostly his initials as his hallmark, but
doesn’t do much silverwork anymore, he is retired from the National Park Service
where he was a ranger at Canyon de Chelly. Willie, who lives in Chinle, said his
sons do a little silversmithing, but that they are busy and don’t have much time
for it.

Niels Erik From Sterling Denmark MCM Atomoic Brooch pin
Niels Erik From Sterling Denmark MCM Atomoic Brooch. 1 5/8" wide x 9/16" beautiful condition with no issues. Danish jeweller and silversmith Niels Erik From ( N.E. From) was born in 1908 and opened his first workshop in 1931 when he was still only twenty-three . Over the next forty years Niels Erik went on to become one one of the greats of Danish design, and created many works including floral-inspired designs often set with semi-precious gemstones. These pieces took inspiration from the Skønvirke style. This was a Scandinavian development that formed part of Denmark’s Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement . This movement ususally took inspiration from nature with designs incorporating flowers and floral motifs as well as featuring natural creatures such as fish. N.E. FROM JEWELLRY STYLES - EARLY FLORAL DESIGNS AND LATER ABSTRACT MODERNIST PIECES N.E. From’s output generally displays one of two distinct styles. In the early years of production he produced wiry, thin, foliage and floral pieces .However, beginning in the 1950's the work produced by From (which were often the designs of other designers) had a very different look. No longer does the jewellery feature romantic, detailed designs from nature. The later pieces have modernist, clean lines with geometric and abstract shapes. Occasionally the modern designs show nature as inspiration with abstract blossom and leaf and blossom shapes. In generally though, they follow the trend of the 1950s of , spare, minimalist design.production .

Sterling Stuart NYE Feather Brooch Handmade pin
Sterling Stuart NYE Feather Brooch Handmade. 3.5" x 7/8" Nice vintage piece in good condition. About Stuart Nye In the depths of the depression, Stuart Nye bought some second hand tools and a little silver. Without any experience in jewelry or metal work, but with good taste, an eye for beauty and faith in himself, he began to make a few simple bangle bracelets. Through trial and error he learned the nature of his materials and began to fashion silver into the leaves and flowers so characteristic of our jewelry today. From that day in 1933 when Mr. Nye began, our shop has changed in many ways. It has moved from an attic room through a series of additions to a garage to the rustic building built especially for our use in 1948 which we now call "The Shop".

1919 American Tramp Art Sewing Box with Pincushion Top Dated WW1 Era
1919 American Tramp Art Sewing Box with Pincushion Top Dated WW1 Era 8.25" x
6.5" x 5.25" tall. Very minimal wear as shown, not a distraction, no significant
issues. Made from cigar boxes as shown from the exposed section on the base.
From a San Antonio, Texas estate.
The first picture is actually the back of the box with the initials on the front
and the date on the back.

Tramp art
Tramp art is a style of woodworking which emerged in America the latter half of
the nineteenth century. Some of tramp art's defining characteristics include
chip or notch carving, the reclaimation of cheap or available wood such as that
from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as penknives,
and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails. One
technique used in tramp art is Crown of Thorns joinery.

History
Although widespread use of wooden cigar boxes in the 1850s sparked involvement
in tramp art, it was most prevalent during the Great Depression. Tramp art was
made around the world but it prospered in the United States. Examples can be
found in every state. The most common forms were the box and the frame and
although there were no rules or patterns to lend commonality in the artists’
work there were objects made in every conceivable shape and size including full
sized furniture and objects of whimsy.

Tramp art was a democratic art form made wherever the raw materials used in its
construction were found. It appealed to men who might have made an important
body of work such as ‘Sunflower’ artist John Martin Zubersky (active c. 1912 –
1920) or the wonderfully expressive wall pockets by John Zadzora (active circa
1910) but also to men who might have made one piece in their lifetime. It was
easy to make and appealed to anyone who had a desire to take a pocketknife to
wood.

There were countless men, some women, and even children who historically
constructed tramp art.

Origins of the Term
A 1959 article by Frances Lichten in Pennsylvania Folklife used the term "tramp
work" to describe crafts constructed from waste materials such as discarded
cigar boxes and assembled with a penknife. Contemporary scholars and art dealers
such as Clifford A. Wallach have noted that while this art form may have been
practiced among America's itinerant population, it was by no means unique to
them and was practiced by factory workers, farmers, and laborers in other
occupations.

In 1975 Helaine Fendelman published the first book on tramp art, Tramp Art an
Itinerant's Folk Art. The book acted as a catalog to the first museum show on
the art form sponsored by the American Museum of Folk Art.
b30

Jonette Jewelry Gold Tone Cat and Mouse Brooch pin
Jonette Jewelry Gold Tone Cat and Mouse Brooch. 2 3/8" wide with no issues. Menu Cart Home › WEC: Thoughts about Jewelry ›Jonette Jewelry Company aka JJ Jewelry Jonette Jewelry Company aka JJ Jewelry Posted by Laurie Zeiden on Aug 07, 2017 Jonette Jewelry Company, or JJ, was a Providence, Rhode Island company in business from 1935 through 2006. The name of the company wasn't always the same. Originally, the company, started by Abraham Lisker, was called The Providence Jewelry Company. Over the years, the company's name was changed to Lisker & Lisker and after a significant slow-down in production during the years of World War II, the company revamped and resurfaced as Jonette Jewelry. JJ is known for it's novelty jewelry, including figurals and animal designs and its Christmas themed jewelry. In the 1980's, JJ produced two specialty lines: Artifacts, a line of novelty pins, and Santa Fe, a line of American western jewelry. JJ jewelry is fairly easy to find in the secondary marketplace and prices can be very reasonable. The most recent pieces can usually be purchased even if you have a very tight budget making JJ a great value and an easy start to a costume jewelry collection.

Miguel Martinez Rancho Alegre Sterling silver turquoise Chile pin
Miguel Martinez Rancho Alegre Sterling silver turquoise Chile pin 2.5" wide x 1.25" tall x 14 grams with no issues. Martinez started his career designing for Emma Melendez in Taxco in the early 1950s before becoming the head designer at Rancho Alegre in the mid 1950s to the late 1960s, and he has continued to design great things ever since. He is a designer not a silversmith, so his pieces can have marks from several different workshops. Often, not always, his pieces are also marked "Miguel", but many of his pieces from the 1950s from Rancho Alegre don't have the extra designer mark. However, his pieces are readily recognizable by the strength of the design!
