Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful
and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007,
53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down
as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul.

Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself
and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief
of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and
gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he
could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From
writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting
relationships with each person who connected with his designs.

    Arnold BlackGoat Navajo Sterling Egyptian turquoise pendant. 3.5" x 2.75" x 32
grams, no damage or detectable wear.

Arnold Blackgoat

Arnold Blackgoat’s great grandfather was Moses Blackgoat. He was the first
silversmith in the Blackgoat family. Moses was from the Lupton area and started
making jewelry in the early 1900s. The art of jewelry making has been passed
down generation to generation. My great-grandfather passed on the trade to my
grandparents, Ben & Helen Blackgoat. They taught my father Harrison, and my
mother Jennie also picked up the trade. Now I am the fourth generation in my
family to make silver.

He started to silversmith at the age of eight, by helping his grandmother, Helen
Blackgoat, his mother Jenny Blackgoat, and his well-known uncle, Carson
Blackgoat.
He is known for his precise free hand stamping, using only the highest grade
stones and heavy gauge silver.

Arnold talks about making jewelry: “I was with my grandma at the Shiprock Fair.
I wanted some money for something at the fair. She tossed me a piece of nickel
and told me to make something. That is how I could earn the money to buy what I
wanted. I made a stamped buckle and bolo that I sold at the fair. My grandma
taught me the value of making my own money and that is what I did.”

“My mother’s work as always has been my inspiration. She always used lots of
stamp work and would make each piece a little different. That was my foundation
and I just made small changes to the work. I would add extra beads, wire work,
homemade bezel, and use better turquoise. Concentrating on making one of a kind
pieces.”

    1 in stock

7 1/8" Navajo Richard Begay Heavy stamped sterling silver bracelet. Very well made, thick and heavy bracelet with no issues.Richard Begay was a Navajo Silversmith from Pinon Arizona. Richard passed away June 1, 2013 and we pay tribute to this remarkable individual. His work is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and the Heard Museum in Phoenix AZ.He was known for both contemporary and traditional jewelry, as well as his innovative inlay designs. His work is represented in many collections and museums both nationally and internationally.Richard was born and raised in Navajoland, Arizona. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. He soon realized that he wanted to create beautiful jewelry. He had been a silversmith since 1974.He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing.Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work for which he is known. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying, always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he does, he also inlays opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work is echoed in his silverwork. He incorporates important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator--it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Chai is the personal link between the Navajo s and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also uses the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he went to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looks for exist in his creations. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content.
