  • 1950's Vic Cedarstaff Bolo Tie Sterling - cobblestone turquoise/coral horseshoe

1950's Vic Cedarstaff Bolo Tie Sterling - cobblestone turquoise/coral horseshoe

    1 in stock

1950's Vic Cedarstaff Bolo Tie Sterling - cobblestone turquoise/coral horseshoe. Amazing and one of a kind bolo. Marked 10k on back along with sterling mark. I didn't test it but don't see anything that looks like gold on the bolo. 40" long cordThe story – which has prevailed against all others and as far as is known, has never been challenged – takes us to Wickenburg, Arizona in 1949. Here, Victor E. Cedarstaff, a resident, designed and made the first bola type of necktie. As Vic tells the story, he was out horseback riding one day and sudden gust of wind blew his hat off. Picking up his hat, he found that the band had become detached. Rather than try to replace it on the spot, he just slipped the band over his head and let it hang loose around his neck. After awhile his riding friend noticed it and remarked. “Nice tie you’re wearing, Vic!” This remark turned out to be more than casual; it sparked an idea. Being a silversmith, and having taught leatherwork, Vic went to work and designed something new and distinctive in this field. In a day or two, he had fashioned a tie from some leather lacing and trimmed the braid ends with silver balls. To this, he fastened a small silver slide adorned with a piece of turquoise. The tie attracted a good deal of skeptical attention from friends, however, orders soon began to arrive.Vic’s problem was that there seemed to be no good way of attaching the slide to the braid, one that would not slip or damage the braid. However, in due time, he succeeded toward this end by designing a triangular shaped slide, which he named a yoke. Unlike most conventional slides, which contain a variety of clips and locking devices to hold the tie in place, this yoke had none and it eliminated the necessity of having to slip the tie on over the head. He succeeded in creating something new and original and on this basis he was issued a patent.Searching for a suitable name for the tie, he settled on one that was truly western. He called it a “Piggin Necklet” naming it from the piggin-string that the cowboys use for tying the legs of a calf. Sometime later, Vic was visiting with a friend in Wickenburg, who had been in Argentina, South America. The friend showed him a device, which he had brought back with him. He called it a “bola” and explained that the Gauchos of that country used it for catching cattle. It bore a strange resemblance to the tie, which Vic had designed; in the way it was braided and had terminals similar to his tie. Vic decided to drop his original name for the tie, and call the tie “bola”. The name change proved almost magical. Soon others began making similar ties and marketing them under various trade names. However, the name “bola” seemed to be the one, which endured, and in the end it has become the universal name for the tie.

1950's William Spratling Modernist Sterling cross pendant

    1 in stock

1950's William Spratling Modernist Sterling cross pendant. Gold wash on center cross with some wear.Spratling, an architect and artist who taught at Tulane University in New<br>Orleans, came to Mexico in the late 1920s and settled in the city of Taxco.<br>Having developed an interest in Mesoamerican archaeology and culture from his<br>colleagues at Tulane, he traveled to Mexico for several summers lecturing and exploring. He sought out remote villages in the state of Guerrero, 110 miles from Mexico City, where in some places Nahuatl, the Aztec language, was spoken.<br>Spratling collected artifacts and contemporary indigenous crafts. Spratling made<br>a fortune manufacturing and designing silver, but his true life's work was to<br>conserve, redeem, and interpret the ancient culture of his adopted country. He<br>explained for North American audiences the paintings of Mexico's modern masters<br>and earned distinction as a learned and early collector of pre-Columbian art.<br>Spratling and his workshop gradually became a visible and culturally attractive<br>link between a steady stream of notable American visitors and the country they<br>wanted to see and experience. Spratling had the rare good fortune to witness his<br>own reputation -- as one of the most admired Americans in Mexico -- assume<br>legendary status before his death. William Spratling, His Life and Art vividly<br>reconstructs this richly diverse life whose unique aesthetic legacy is but a<br>part of its larger cultural achievement of profoundly influencing Americans'<br>attitudes toward a civilization different from their own.

In 1955 he retired from teaching and devoted his time to ceramics. Black became a well-known ceramist from his research, innovations, and writings in the field. Black's collection and archive is housed at Baylor University. Harding Black's work with clay serves an an important bridge between early Texas and mid-century pottery. tw122

1953 Rolex Oyster Shock Resisting watch w/box

1953 Rolex Oyster Shock Resisting watch w/box. Very clean, working automatic Rolex c1953. The serial number places it at 1953 or 1963, but the Brevet + on the side above the 6282 model number was only used until the late 50's. Seiko replacement band. Original Authetic Rolex, I acquired it with this box from a friend. It was his Grandfather's, I don't know enough to be 100% sure if this is the original box, there is no inner box, just what's shown. Case approx 33-34mm wide without the crown. Still has what I assume to be the original protective clear plastic sticker on the back of the watch.

Tyrus Raymond Cobb Born: December 18, 1886 Georgia Died: July 17, 1961 (aged 74) Atlanta Georgia Awards And Honors: Baseball Hall of Fame (1936) Most Valuable Player (1911) Baseball Hall of Fame (inducted 1936. Triple Crown 1x MVP 12x batting champion Ty Cobb, in full Tyrus Raymond Cobb, byname the Georgia Peach, (born December 18, 1886, Narrows, Georgia, U.S.—died July 17, 1961, Atlanta, Georgia), professional baseball player, considered one of the greatest offensive players in baseball history and generally regarded as the fiercest competitor in the game. Cobb took to baseball early in his life: by age 14 he was playing alongside adults on the local baseball team in Royston, Georgia. In 1904 he joined a semiprofessional team in Anniston, Alabama, and the following year he signed with the minor league Augusta (Georgia) Tourists. While playing with the Tourists, Cobb had his personal life jolted by an unusual tragedy: on August 8, 1905, his mother shot and killed his father, who was atop the family’s porch roof in an attempt to catch her being unfaithful and whom she purportedly mistook for a burglar. That event overshadowed his promotion to the Detroit Tigers later that month. His combative reaction to his subsequent rookie hazing created animosity between Cobb and his teammates that lasted for years, which greatly helped to establish the antagonistic public persona that would become one of Cobb’s hallmarks. He spent 22 seasons as an outfielder with the Tigers (1905–26) and also managed the team from 1921 through 1926. Cobb led the team to three consecutive American League (AL) pennants (1907–09), but the Tigers lost all three World Series in which he appeared. A member of the Philadelphia Athletics when he retired in 1928, Cobb hit .323 in his last season, at age 41. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, stood about 6 feet 1 inch (1.9 metres), and weighed 175 pounds (79.4 kg). During his 24-season career in the AL, Cobb established numerous batting records. His career hits record of 4,189 lasted until it was broken by Pete Rose in 1985. He also set the runs-scored mark of 2,246, a total that was not surpassed until 2001 by Rickey Henderson. Cobb’s total of 892 stolen bases was surpassed in 1979 by Lou Brock. Finally, Cobb’s lifetime batting average of .366 was unequaled through the 20th century. (It should be noted that there is disagreement among sports statisticians as to the exact figure for Cobb’s batting statistics.) Cobb led the AL in batting 12 times. Three times his batting average topped .400 (1911, .420; 1912, .409; and 1922, .401), and for 23 straight years he batted at least .300. In the first election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, in 1936, Cobb received the most votes. He invested his baseball earnings shrewdly and amassed a comfortable fortune. Cobb’s historic baseball accomplishments are occasionally overshadowed by his notorious personality. Known for sharpening his spikes in order to cause the most damage to opponents’ legs when sliding, he was one of the most aggressive players in baseball history, and his short temper led to numerous on-field scuffles (he even attacked a heckling fan in the stands on one occasion). His autobiography, My Life in Baseball, ghostwritten by sportswriter Al Stump, was published in 1961. Stump amended the record in 1994 with Cobb: A Biography, which presents a far more honest view of the great player. Cobb’s racism, misogyny, and volatile and violent personality are covered in Stump’s second book, which was the basis of a 1994 film, Cobb.

Better quality than most of the Effie C pieces I've had. I already wasted a lot of time trying to figure out for sure who G Calavaza is, I don't think it's her daughters and am sure it's not her grandson Gilbert. Not sure. I am sure this is a very old buckle from the third quarter of the 20th century.Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Older Native American jewelry is typically unmarked. If I call it Silver or Ingot I'm guaranteeing it to be 90% or more silver. This isn't something I get confused about. Sorry but my jewelry is stored in a secure location and cannot be accessed for more pictures, videos, or measurements until sold. If you look at pictures/description your question should be answered.
