It is often said that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is worn. So, for example, a thick geometric necklace that might at first glance seem too weighty or rigid to wear comfortably is, in fact, faceted, hinged, or hollowed in such a way that it gracefully encircles the neck or drapes down the décolletage. In addition, no other taxqueño jeweler used as many costly semiprecious stones or set them with as much ingenuity, skill, and variety as did Pineda. Only the most talented of silversmiths could master.

It is
oftensaid that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is
worn. So, for example, a thickgeometric necklace that might at first glance seem
too weighty or rigid to wear comfortably is, in fact, faceted, hinged, or
hollowed in such a way that it gracefully encircles the neck or drapes
seductivelydown the décolletage. In addition, no other taxqueño jeweler used as
many costly semiprecious stones or set them with asmuch ingenuity, skill, and
variety as did Pineda. Selling the exact
necklace shown designed by Arno Malinowski for Georg Jensen in the 1960's.
Handmade and designed in the mid 1960's, an authentic period Mid Century modern
piece of the highest quality in both design and .

Silversmith. Arno Malinowski trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in
Copenhagen from 1922 to 1935 and designed a series of statuettes depicting
figures from mythology from 1921 to 1935 for the Royal Danish Porcelain
Manufactory. He worked for Georg Jensen from 1936 to 1944 and again from 1949 to
1965 creating designs for jewelry and hollowware . His 1937 jewelry designs of a
kneeling deer, a dolphin in the rushes and butterflies on a flower continued in
production for many years. In 1940 he designed the ‘Kingmark’ to commemorate the
seventieth birthday of King Christian. It was produced in great numbers and worn
by Danes to show their loyalty to Denmark and their resistance to the German
occupation. Malinowski had also studied the Japanese technique of inlaying iron
with gold or silver in the style of tsuba sword guards. During the war years
when the supply of silver was limited This enabled him to design pieces of
jewelry in iron rather than in silver. Also worked as a sculptor, ceramist,
engraver and medalist.

Georg Jensen, (born August 31, 1866, Raadvad, Denmark—died October 2, 1935,
Copenhagen), Danish silversmith and designer who achieved international
prominence for his commercial application of modern metal design. The simple
elegance of his works and their emphasis on fine craftsmanship, hallmarks of
Jensen’s products, are recognized around the world.

Jensen was apprenticed to a goldsmith at age 14. His artistic talents were
briefly focused on sculpture, but he returned to metalwork, primarily jewelry
and silver pieces, produced in the workshop he opened in Copenhagen in 1904.
Jensen exhibited his works at several major foreign exhibitions (winning a gold
medal at the Brussels Exhibition of 1910) and quickly built a reputation as an
outstanding and highly original silversmith. He moved to a larger workshop in
1912 and acquired his first factory building in 1919.

Jensen’s silverware achieved immediate popularity and commercial success. He
was, in fact, the first silver maker to realize a profit from the manufacture of
modern silver. Until Jensen’s time virtually all successful silverware producers
had relied on a standard repertory of popular traditional designs. Jensen,
however, found that the market for his sleek, simple pieces was larger than
anyone had predicted. His firm grew rapidly, expanding throughout Europe and
opening branches in London and New York City. On both continents Jensen’s work
set trends for contemporary tableware. He was among the first designers to
fashion steel—formerly considered fit only for low-quality, inexpensive
flatware—into handsome, serviceable cutlery.

In the early 1900s, as Italy was continuing to become the world leader in
fashion, the Primavera family worked as jewelry artisans in the beautiful area
of Pescara, Italy. In 1918, the family founded Primavera Designs and by 1921 it
had become the largest jewelry company in the Abruzzo region. It was there that the family became well known throughout the region for their
ability to design and make jewelry for royalty and wealthy families. Often one
of the Primavera jewelry artisans would go directly into the home of a patron to
design and reproduce a cherished object of art into jewelry. This continued in Italy until 1934, when Mr. Victor Primavera, Sr. immigrated to
the United States and incorporated his company in Rhode Island; the jewelry
capital of the United States. Primavera Designs now had a United States
division, known as Danecraft, with a small factory and Mr. Victor Primavera, Sr.
heading up the design and model making teams. His forte in designing product was always timeliness. He often said that it was
easy to design a piece to be shown in a museum, but it took research and talent
to design product that would be worn by a woman with fashion sense. Although the candlelight has been replaced by fluorescent light and some of the painstaking handwork has been supplemented by modern machinery, the rich and
beautiful handcrafted look of distinction continues.

Since 1934, Danecraft has been privately owned and operated by the Primavera
family.

About 25 years later, in 1837, Charles Tiffany and John Young, and later in 1841, they added J.L.. Ellis as a partner, began Tiffany, Young and Ellis in Lower Manhattan. That company at the time was founded at first to sell fancy goods and stationery. Tiffany bought his parents shares of the company in 1853 and changed the focus of the company to sell upscale jewelry and merchandise. Once Tiffany bought his parent’s shares, the company was renamed to Tiffany & Co. In 1867, Tiffany & Co. was the first United States based company to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1868, the company became incorporated, had four stores and was on the right path to continue to grow to the company that it is today.A Humble Start When Young and Tiffany began their business, they originally started off with offering items such as stationery and merchandise before moving on to offering jewelry and silverware. The business continued to grow and manufacture jewelry, and later opened a location in Paris. His stores adopted the standards of European jewelry and therefore, sterling became established in the United States and the American jewelry market.Tiffany was determined to obtain one-of-a-kind jewelry. It was that desire which helped fuel how much his products were sought out, specifically among the upper classes of New York. The jewelry created by the company became partially well known because of the wealthy people who desired its products. In the 1830’s, Tiffany made it’s mark in the jewelry world at the time because they clearly marked the prices on their goods. This eliminated the chance that customers would haggle and try to negotiate the prices of the goods that they were purchasing at the time. Additionally, Tiffany’s was unique at the time because they only accepted cash payments and didn’t allow their goods to be purchased on credit. With the Civil War threatening jewelry purchasing at the time, Tiffany adjusted the focus of his company and ended up manufacturing swords, medals, light armor and many other items that were needed for war. In 1877, Tiffany & Co. had become such an established name that it easily influenced the industry and was able to make outlandish purchases. This when the now called “Tiffany diamond” (a yellow South African diamond) was purchased for $18,000 at 287 carats. The diamond was cut down to 128.54 carats over nearly a year and was eventually put on display in the Smithsonian. Today, Tiffany & Co. is an American worldwide luxury jeweler and specialty retailer, headquartered in New York City.Understanding the Markings While Tiffany & Co. is famous for the “Tiffany diamond” they are even more famous for their use of sterling silver. When looking at actually sterling silver that is made by Tiffany’s there are several markings that can help you figure out the origin and if a piece is indeed made by Tiffany’s or fake. At the start, there were several silversmiths who supplied silver flatware and holloware to Tiffany’s. Each of those silversmiths marked the pieces with their own marks in addition to marking them with Tiffany’s marks. Some of the makes of Tiffany’s sterling silver include William Gale, Gale & Hughes, Wood & Hughes, John Polhemus, Henry Hebbard, William Bogert, Grosjean & Woodward, Moore & Hebbard and John C. Moore. In 1868, Moore silversmithing firm was absorbed into Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany’s then began the production of its own silver. It was at that time that the silver was to be marked with the initial of the Artistic Director or the initial of the President of the firm but that was continued until the mid-1960’s. Each design on the silver that Tiffany’s creates represents the long and proud heritage that comes with the company’s history.

Art Tafoya Yaqui sterling frog fetish pendant. Big oversized pendant with large bail to hand on thick necklace. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Few silversmiths match the power and artistry of Art Tafoya. He specializes in silver. Hammered silver. The old way. Art Tafoya carries on that tradition of the early masters, for he makes his own stamps and dies. Arts clear and crisp stamp work speaks of skill and talent born of that tradition. Thick silver, hammered like leather, only deeper, brisk, clear and lovely.Art Tafoya, silversmith and artist, learned the basics of silversmithing at the age to twelve from a blacksmith at a riding stable near his home. Later he learned the art of making handmade stamps and dies from Carlos White Eagle, a former student of the legendary Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai. Art has made an exhaustive study of Fred Peshlakais stamps and is an expert at identifying even unsigned work by this master. All of Arts stamps and dies are his own creations. He specializes in hand stamped old-style jewelry reminiscent of Peshlakais, but definitely all of his own.His original jewelry is highly sought after by collectors worldwide. He was a silversmith in residence at The Turquoise Shop at Knotts Berry Farm in California for twenty-five years before relocating to New Mexico. His work may be found in the permanent collection of the Albuquerque Museum, the Grove Encyclopedia of American Art and his work is included in the book Navajo Silversmith Fred Peshlakai, His Life and Art. Arthur Bishop Jeffreys (American/Texas, 1892-1970) large Texas landscape paintin

    1 in stock

Arthur Bishop Jeffreys (American/Texas, 1892-1970) large Texas landscape painting. 22" x 29" canvas 28" x 35" framed. No damage or notable issues. Nice old painting from the second quarter of the 20th century. Arthur Bishop Jeffreys, 1892-1970, was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He had a mixed career as a painter and newspaper journalist. Starting late to paint in 1923, when in his early thirties, he was employed, 1942 through 1969, by one newspaper, which changed its name three times: the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tyler Courier-Times, and Courier-Times-Telegraph. He had moved to Tyler, Texas from Dallas in 1936, and for the newspaper worked primarily as a proofreader. However, using the name Arthur Bishop, he also wrote feature articles and shorter columns. As a young man, his destiny lay elsewhere, he was employed by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company, apparently in Dallas, where he worked until 1918 as a road master's clerk, secretary to the chief engineer, and secretary to the general manager. Though he briefly studied in New York with Frederick Jarvis, Jeffreys was essentially self-taught. He died in Tyler, and is buried there. He was a member of the Art Students League, New York City; Chicago Art League, Illinois; Dallas Art Association; and Society of Independent Artists. His work is in the collections of the Hilton Hotel, Waco; and La Grange College, Georgia. His landscapes appeared in magazines including Holland's and Literary Digest in 1926. His 1927 painting of Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, autographed by the flyer, sold for $2,000 at an auction in New York City. Jeffrreys was able to make money from his similarly autographed paintings of World War I ace fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart, the first woman aviator to cross the Atlantic. Shows with Jeffreys work include the Exhibition of Texas Artists, Nashville Museum of Art, Tennessee (1927 prize); and Painters of Texas 1900-1950, Museums of Abilene (1989).

Artie Yellowhorse Navajo sterling silver spiderweb turquoise beaded necklace

    Out of stock

Artie Yellowhorse Navajo sterling silver spiderweb turquoise beaded necklace. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. No issues. 19" long, circa last quarter of the 20th century with no significant issues. I believe this is Lone Mountain turquoise. ARTIE YELLOWHORSE B I O G R A P H Y Navajoland – vast, sun drenched and breathtaking in beauty – is the childhood home of one of its native daughters, Artie Yellowhorse. Being a third-generation jeweler, Artie has the background and experience to represent the finest in Navajo jewelry. Like a magician who uses illusion to transform objects, Artie makes simple silver and gemstones into wondrous works of art, only there is no magic behind it. Rather, it is hard work and her dedication to perfection that makes her exquisite jewelry stand out. Artie feels her interest in jewelry design began with her grandfather, Curthair Yellowhorse, a renowned Navajo medicine man, who initiated the Yellowhorse family tradition of working in silver and turquoise. This tradition has been passed down and refined by each Yellowhorse generation to the present time. All the descendants of Curthair Yellowhorse have made significant contributions to the art of silversmithing, working in facets of this medium. Artie Yellowhorse, as a member of this tradition, began working at the art when she was twelve years old. As the years passed and the demand for contemporary silverwork increased, Artie recognized the need to organize her family members into a single business. This would give them the ability to create enough pieces to meet the ever-increasing demand for fine Navajo jewelry. In 1979, Artie began the family business out of her home in New Mexico with four family members. Soon many other members of her clan, “Kee aa ona,” meaning “Towering House,” accepted the opportunity to work under Artie’s direction. The high quality and style of Artie’s jewelry has earned her reputation and recognition. Artie has been invited to exhibit her jewelry in art shows, galleries and museums throughout the United States.
