Bennett Kagenveama was an extraordinarily talented Hopi overlay silversmith, born in Shungopavi, Hopi Second Mesa Arizona. His parents, Richard and Gladys Kagenveama, were very prominent artists. His mother, Gladys is considered one of the top Hopi coil basket weavers. Bennetts jewelry exudes a level of intricate detail not seen in other Hopi overlay jewelry. He created his jewelry by overlaying multiple layers of silver and finished with delicate oxidation and intricate hand texturing. This interesting contrast in the textures of his silverwork is what really makes his work stand out. Bennett specialized in the Kachina designs, including dance scenes with kivas and pueblos in the background. Bennett passed away in 2025. Beyond being a wonderful artist, he was a friend who we will greatly miss. Bennett was a soft spoken, humble, and very kind man. He was very well thought of by his peers and his work garnered praise from collectors all over the world.

Fits a 1.5" belt. Unmarked, attributed. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs.

He worked many of his professional years in Tucson with master goldsmith Morris Talawytewa Robinson and Ralph Tawangyaouma. Allen Pooyouma is known for silver ingot, hand wrought, heavy stampwork and twist wire jewelry set with high quality, natural turquoise. Allen Pooyouma (1922-2014) signed with his hallmark, a stamped ear of corn, and with conjoined letters, HC. Presented in this way, the HC refers to Hopi Crafts. Formerly known as Hopi Enterprises, Hopi Crafts was started by brothers Wayne and Emory Sekaquaptewa operating on Second Mesa between 1962-1983 Pooyouma was born in Hootvilla, Arizona, and learned silversmithing from his father at age 15. His uncle was the renowned Hopi master Ralph Tawangyawma. During World War II, he continued making jewelry on the reservation due to poor eyesight. Dee Morris was adopted into the Navajo Nation where he was raised within the Navajo culture and taught the family art of silversmithing by his Navajo grandfather. He gained international fame as a cutting edge Navajo artist when the buffalo head he embellished with 9000 carats of turquoise sold for $25,000 in 1974. He taught his trade to his grandson who also became famous. He had his own gallery in Sedona, Arizona for many years which he sold in 1975. He partnered with Ralph Lauren on several projects and unfortunately died in 2006. His work has been featured in Arizona Highways magazine many times. The Jan 1974 issue featured his work on their front cover. He is a world renowned artist.

1949 Kenneth Begay Navajo sterling silver olla flower holder vase brooch/pin. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. No issues, circa mid 20th century. Dated 1949. Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) was called the “father of modern Navajo jewelry” for his clean, bold, modern designs. But he also exemplifies the long history and continuity of Navajo jewelry-making: Begay studied under Fred Peshlakai, who had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught many others including his son, Harvey, now a renowned jeweler. Though deeply rooted in traditional jewelry-making techniques, Begay’s work was so innovative that it was rejected from a 1949 exhibition of Native art as too radical. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, “I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style.”

Cippy Crazy Horse Born Cipriano Quintana to renowned jewelers Terecita and Joe H. Quintana, Cippy CrazyHorse has carried on the classic traditional Pueblo design his parents started. To these classic designs, CrazyHorse brings his personal style. The bold, deep stamp and chisel designs on thick gauge silver are his trademark. Much of the thick gauge silver comes from melting scrap silver into ingots – a process the “old timers” incorporated. CrazyHorse says of his work, “There are traditional classic styles in silver jewelry, the Navajo and the Pueblo , and I do the latter; from cuff bracelets to concho belts, ranger set buckles and bead necklaces.” Following high school, CrazyHorse attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales for two and a half years and then served in the US Navy until 1972. Upon returning home to Cochiti, CrazyHorse worked as an electrician’s assistant on the construction of Cochiti Dam, but an injury in 1974 curtailed that line of work. According to CrazyHorse, the injury “forced his hand at silversmithing.” He started with the smaller tasks of making silver chains and gradually taught himself the old style of silversmithing. With much support and encouragement from his father and his wife, Susan, his silversmithing began earnestly. CrazyHorse has received much recognition for his work, having garnered his share of ribbons at the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts Indian Market in Santa Fe over the course of the past 35 years. He is considered a “Master Silversmith” and his work is numerous collections and books on Native American jewelry. In the August, 2008 issue of The Santa Fean, Cippy was featured as one of “Seven Standouts” of Indian Market. He has been featured in many other newspaper and magazine articles over the years, and in several museum and private exhibitions throughout the country. His work is highly sought after in Japan , where his classic designs are admired as well as his dedication to a traditional lifestyle at Cochiti Pueblo. Cippy and his work are featured in the “Artists – Handmade” section of the April 2011 issue of the Japanese (American Western Culture) magazine, “Free and Easy”. Cippy has also been a Jewelry Judge at SWAIA Indian Market a number of times, where his unique sense of humor certainly enlivens the proceedings.

Alfred Joe Navajo Sterling silver lapis beaded necklace shadowbox/overlay design. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. 16.5" long. Award-winning, Navajo jeweler Alfred Joe was born in Winslow, Arizona to Rose Ann and Robert Joe. Alfred learned silversmithing from his uncle Colbert Joe, at a young age. He also went on to attend college at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff. In 1972, Alfred Joe was making some of the finest chip inlay jewelry available at the time. His uncle Colbert Joe encouraged him to pursue more traditional designs. During the 1970s, he worked in his family’s silver shop in Winslow, Arizona, called “Little Squash” (which is the family’s nickname for the oldest son). When silver prices skyrocketed, the shop had to close, and this allowed Alfred to concentrate more on his jewelry making. Alfred Joe is known for his graceful, traditional designs, with a contemporary edge. He uses shadowbox techniques as well as stamping and overlay. Gem grade turquoise stones from mines such as, Carico Lake, Lander, Bisbee, Morenci and more, are used in his pieces, in addition to Mediterranean red corral and Lapis. A technique used in creating his signature rug bracelets is a silver dust overlay process that provides a level of contrast and texture to the pieces. Working in both silver and gold, his two-sided pendants are highly prized for their magnificent, gem-quality stones and elegant craftsmanship. Since 1972, Alfred Joe has won every major award bestowed in his field.
