GEORG JENSEN (1866 - 1935) When the 37-year-old Georg Jensen, with both an apprenticeship as goldsmith and sculptor behind him, made silver his way of living by establishing his silver smithy in Copenhagen in 1904, it was with the fine craftsmans understanding and appreciation of the material combined with the accomplished artists sense of form. Through his childhood in the picturesque surroundings of Raadvad north of Copenhagen Georg Jensen was inspired to become an artist. He succeeded in becoming both sculptor and ceramist but it was by way of his talent as a silver smith that he achieved the most remarkable recognition. The Georg Jensen Silversmithy created some of the most original and epoch-defining jewelry, hollowware and cutlery patterns. At Georg Jensens death in 1935 the smithy was acknowledged as one of the most important silversmithies in the world. Georg Jensen was instrumental in defining the character of the twentieth century Scandinavian Design by drawing on Danish traditions and infusing them with a progressive design rationale. He rejected the popular taste of the time for romantic and historicist ornamentation and ostentation, instead embracing the avant-garde Art Nouveau style with its simple organic forms and craft-based approach to production. 1929 Latvian Sterling silver 5 Laati Coin pin. Pin made from real 90+ year old silver coin, no issues. Buying the exact pin shown. Weight and measurements in pics. 5 lati coin minted in 1929, 1931 and 1932. It became a popular symbol of independence during the Soviet occupation. In February 1929, the Latvian Ministry of Finance decided to issue a ? 5 circulation coin depicting the head of a maiden, which would symbolize the Republic of Latvia and freedom. The coin was designed by Rihards Zariņš. The image of the maiden on the coin is colloquially known as Milda (a Latvian female name). The model was Zelma Brauere (1900-1977), a proofreader of the State Securities Printing House. She served as a model for other works of the artist, including the ? 10 and ? 20 banknotes and the 50s coin. In 1939, the Latvian government prepared to mint new ? 5 coins to be issued in 1941. The Latvian maiden was to be replaced by a portrait of the authoritarian leader of Latvia, Kārlis Ulmanis. Those coins were never minted as the Second World War broke out. Say the truth, it is one ot the most beautiful silver coin issued in 1920s. An the value for this coins goes high every year. Andrew Dewa Zuni Sterling Multi-stone inlay sunface penant/pin. No issues, weight and measurements in pics, comes on the 19" necklace shown. Andrew Dewa was a well-known Zuni silversmith and artist who created jewelry from the 1960s until his death in 2001. His work is known for its intricate mosaic inlay and raised carvings, which often depict figures such as sunfaces, antelope dancers, shalakos, and rainbow men. Dewa‘s pieces were made from sterling silver, turquoise, coral, mother of pearl, jet, and gold-lipped shell. Dewa learned the craft from his parents, Anita and Leroy Dewa, when he was a teenager. Natural American turquoise, solid sterling silver from the second quarter of the 20th century. Weight and measurements in pics. Unmarked as typical of this era. ONDELACY, WARREN & DORIS (Zuni, active.1940-1960‘s). Specialized in large Zuni cluster work. Warren was considered a master silversmith along with his wife Doris. Recognizable techniques of silver repousse work often accompanied their designs along with the consistent use of high quality materials. Trader C. G. Wallace, retained many of the Ondelacy‘s pieces for his private collection. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver.
