sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Billy Molokeng LISTED South African ARTIST Pastel Drawing Warrior with Spear
Frame measures 25.75" x 18.5" dimensions inside inner matting is 12" x 19". It's
triple matted. Frame shows some wear, picture and matting are perfect.

Billy Molokeng

Born 1944 - Gauteng

About the Artist

Billy Molokeng was born in 1944 in the Alexandria Township in Johannesburg. He
was orphaned at a very young age and brought up by his sisters. In order to make
a day-to-day living he started selling his drawings, and later, paintings. This
brought him to the attention of a wealthy sponsor, who enabled him to attend a
private art school, which in turn helped to develop his style and technique.

Molokeng is an unusual and dynamic personality who enjoys and excels in all
forms of creativity. He composes and performs his own songs, enjoying enormous
popularity under the stage name of “Billy Africa”.

Style and Format

Versatility, dynamism and inventiveness have kept Billy Molokeng’s work fresh
and ever changing, ensuring that both he and his art do not become stereotyped.
This is demonstrated by the fact that his work was initially typically
“township” in character, but developed into his own more unique style in later
years.

His early paintings portray scenes taken directly from life in the townships.
The compositions of these early works are dense and on a single plane, usually
with several figures depicted in a bold and heavy manner. His individuality and
originality, however, is still strongly evident. His figures are lively and
filled with movement, containing a subtle humour, underlying joy and
light-heartedness which so many art lovers relate to, and enjoy.

During the 1970s and 1980s, this South African artist’s work became more
sophisticated, both technically and conceptually, representing a more mature
artist at work. Molokeng’s work started to move away from direct township
depictions towards a fusion of the urban experience with African motifs and
culture.

Compositionally, his African art became lighter and began to incorporate more of
the figurative and abstract than the literal. Many of his paintings began to
display a more sketchy landscape background, containing forms such as huts,
missionary churches, ox wagons, oxen and human figures in tribal and rural dress
partaking in traditional customs.

Towards the end of the 1970’s, a calligraphic element within his work began to
emerge. This, together with the Bushman-like figures that started to populate
his township art, gave his work a potent African flavour that still exists to
this day, and makes Billy Molokeng’s work so appealing to South Africans and
foreigners alike.

In the 1980’s Molokeng’s work witnessed further developments, resulting in a
more refined technique and style. Township life, once again, became important
subject matter, although it was rendered in a more personal manner and blended
with the African landscape. The landscape element of this newer work is more
solid and is rendered as an integral part of the more abstract compositions and
forms. Influenced by life and politics within the townships during the most
volatile period of South African history, Molokeng’s work began to demonstrate
strength and a sensitivity that were to remain an intrinsic part of his work.

Exhibitions

Molokeng had his first exhibition at Dorkey House, Eloff Street, Johannesburg.
In 1974 he participated in several group exhibitions – at the Canadian Embassy,
Gallery 101, Lidchi Art Gallery and at the Herbert Evans Art Gallery,
Johannesburg. In 1976, he participated in the Second International Art Fair in
Tel Aviv, Israel. This was followed by a one-man show in Germany in 1979. The
next year (1980), he took part in group shows in Athens and in Rome and
subsequently had a one-man show at the Lidchi Art Gallery in Johannesburg. In
1981, Billy Molokeng was awarded one of the three prizes for painting at the
Republic Art Festival.

Molokeng has also been featured in a group exhibition at the World Bank offices
in Washington, U.S.A. along with other artists chosen from Cameroon, Ghana, Mali
and Nigeria.

Currently, Billy Molokeng presents a strong sense of “Africa” within his
paintings. Their potency and appeal lie in his bold use of colour, his strong
compositions and his unique use of his medium. The acrylic and oils are used as
an overlay, which is often scratched away to create different textures and
layers, as well as expose various underlying colours. His use of black
strengthens and enhances the burnt sienna, ocher, gold, greens and blues as well
as emphasizing his trademark white and black eyes of his figures.

Billy Molokeng’s South African artworks are appreciated by thousands and are
part of many private and public collections both in South Africa and abroad.

Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful
and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. Sorry but my jewelry is
stored in a secure location and cannot be accessed for more pictures, videos, or
measurements until sold. If you look at pictures/description your question
should be answered. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

NUMEROUS award winner Navajo artist Harry Morgan (1947-2008) was a 5th
generation Navajo silversmith who'll always be remembered for his traditional
"Vintage Revival-Old Pawn" style jewelry that had these gleaming sterling
vintage looking darkened finishings that were made in a classic old style Navajo
design..The beauty he gave the sterling was so warm that it brought out the
metal's maximum luster..Harry once said "That's the way old style jewelry should
look," he said.. "When silver is all shined up it hides all of the intricate
detail in the stamp work and the bezels. This older style is what I grew up with
and what I love."

Although it was his mother who inspired him to create this style of jewelry that
had that old Navajo look,it was Harry however who was the 1st to bring this
style to the forefront of the industry..Paving the way for others like his
brother-in-law Kirk Smith who then followed in Harry's footsteps & with Kirk's
connection with other artists, they then followed in Kirk's footsteps. Now this
is the dominant style amongst most Navajo artists & you see this old pawn style
darkened finishing everywhere..Kirks name will always be associated with Harry's
& vise versa.

if you've ever wondered why most Navajo pieces have that old style look &
finishing where many of you can't tell if the piece is new or old anymore,it was
this man who we can give the credit to for bringing a style of jewelry that we
now see everywhere. Felicita Eustace, Cochiti (1927-2016) Carved turquoise silver clip on earrings 1" tall x 7/8" wide, strong springs on clips, no issues, 8.6 grams. Felicita was a potter and silversmith.

Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.

The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.

Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 Overlay sterling silver pins (2)
Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 Overlay silver pins (2) Largest 2", 18.9 grams total weight.

Navajo Overlay Artist Willie Yazzie

After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other
silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not
Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at
Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941.
The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs
and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders
Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay
pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres
designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper
advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo
Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.

However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie
Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.

Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and
archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in
February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession,
lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie
Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the
artist.

According to Social Security records, Willie A. Yazzie was born at Chinle,
Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post
in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no
later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have
included his gourd dipper hallmark. His designs often incorporated animal
figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He
never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs.

In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for
a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk
recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde
in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie
created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark
depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his
gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.

Willie A. Yazzie died in 1999, but his family, including his widow, daughter and
Willie Jr continue the tradition of Willie’s overlay work. Willie Jr said that
his sister has most of their father’s tools and stamps, and that she still uses
the gourd dipper mark. Willie uses mostly his initials as his hallmark, but
doesn’t do much silverwork anymore, he is retired from the National Park Service
where he was a ranger at Canyon de Chelly. Willie, who lives in Chinle, said his
sons do a little silversmithing, but that they are busy and don’t have much time
for it.

My thoughts are
with (Hematian’s son) Benny and his family,” Rocha said.

Sarin Bachmann, group vice president of the RX Jewelry Portfolio, said: “We were
so saddened to learn about Effy Hematian’s passing. Effy has been a wonderful
partner to JCK over the years and a force in the industry.

“We appreciated his deep passion for creating beautiful jewelry stemming from
his roots as an engineer. Effy’s legacy will live on with his family, his
namesake business, and the wonderful jewelry creations he inspires.”

On social media, members of the trade—including many Effy Jewelry employees—and
the brand’s customers reacted to news of Hematian’s passing with similar
remembrances, recalling a man who was kind and had a passion and a talent for
design.

Jan Swartz, the group president for Holland America Group, wrote on LinkedIn,
“Mr. Effy Hematian was much more than one of the world’s most brilliant jewelry
designers and visionary entrepreneurs.

“Beyond his professional achievements, he had a kind and generous spirit. I
admired his craftsmanship, creativity, passion, and love of his colleagues,
community, and family. Mr. Effy will long be remembered by every life he
touched, and his legacy will live on.”

On Facebook, a longtime Effy Jewelry customer said, “RIP Effy … your creations
have been making me happy for years and will continue to, for years to come.”

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin sz6 Harald Christian Nielsen for Georg Jensen sterling silver and Hematite ring 46A
Harald Christian Nielsen for Georg Jensen Silver and Hematite ring 46A Size 6, super clean with no damage or detectable wear.

Harald Nielsen (20 July 1892 – 22 December 1977) was a Danish designer of silver for Georg Jensen. The younger brother of Georg Jensen's third wife, he joined the company at 17 as a chaser's apprentice but later became one of the company's leading designers in the 1920s and 1930s and Jensen's closest colleague. One of his most well-known designs being the pyramid flatware pattern. In the early 1950s he headed the company's apprentice school and in 1958 became its artistic director.

Georg Jensen, (born August 31, 1866, Raadvad, Denmark—died October 2, 1935,
Copenhagen), Danish silversmith and designer who achieved international
prominence for his commercial application of modern metal design. The simple
elegance of his works and their emphasis on fine craftsmanship, hallmarks of
Jensen’s products, are recognized around the world.

Jensen was apprenticed to a goldsmith at age 14. His artistic talents were
briefly focused on sculpture, but he returned to metalwork, primarily jewelry
and silver pieces, produced in the workshop he opened in Copenhagen in 1904.
Jensen exhibited his works at several major foreign exhibitions (winning a gold
medal at the Brussels Exhibition of 1910) and quickly built a reputation as an
outstanding and highly original silversmith. He moved to a larger workshop in
1912 and acquired his first factory building in 1919.

Jensen’s silverware achieved immediate popularity and commercial success. He
was, in fact, the first silver maker to realize a profit from the manufacture of
modern silver. Until Jensen’s time virtually all successful silverware producers
had relied on a standard repertory of popular traditional designs. Jensen,
however, found that the market for his sleek, simple pieces was larger than
anyone had predicted. His firm grew rapidly, expanding throughout Europe and
opening branches in London and New York City. On both continents Jensen’s work
set trends for contemporary tableware. He was among the first designers to
fashion steel—formerly considered fit only for low-quality, inexpensive
flatware—into handsome, serviceable cutlery. Most rings are shown on a a ring sizer in the pictures and the size is typically given at the beginning of the title and description. Women's Size 6 Ring.

This bracelet it composed of 14k gold, Gem Silica, Natural Australian Opal, Carnelian, Chalcedony, and Lapis Lazuli. Duane Maktima was studying education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, when a dean suggested he switch his major to art. “ I thought it would be a hobby.” Growing up in tiny towns in Arizona under the tutelage of his Hopi and Laguna relatives, Maktima learned how to carve and paint, but these artworks were referred to as “blessings” and not art. The Dean, having seen Duane’s work was insistent. When Maktima first laid eyes on the jewelry in the jewelry lab, he says, “It was like my whole life flashed before my eyes, I was hooked.” It took a decade for Maktima to complete his degree. He left college to work as a resident artist at the nearby Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. At only 19 years old he was given a studio and stipend to make jewelry which was snapped up by visitors from around the world. Eventually he embarked on a personal retreat from the pressure and spent 3 years at Laguna Pueblo. Maktima worked there as a survey helper and everyday he walked the country from Second Mesa to Black Mesa. During these long walks he came to deeply appreciate his heritage and decided to complete his education. When he did return to university, it was an exciting time for Native American artists. His research into African and Indian art led him create spiritual based pieces from beads, shell work mosaics, motifs from Hopi pottery, hollow silver tubes, gold , lapis, turquoise , and red coral. In 1982, Maktima, received a second-ever fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. He moved to Sante Fe a year later. An active community leader, he has influenced many young people to pursue a career in art. His brooches, buckles, and other exquisite jewelry have been featured in some of the best Native American galleries. In 1990, Northern Arizona University honored the artist with its 2000 Distinguished Alumni Artist Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, and member of the President’s Circle. Maktima credits his achievements to his education and his family. “I can hear grandpa saying, ‘You have really learned something. You’ve really excelled with what God gave you.’ ” According to his grandfather, the name “Maktima” means “searching for eagles.”
