Weight and measurements in pictures. David Taliman (1902-1967). Born near Ganado, Arizona. He began his career in California under the guidance of well-known Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai. Moving back to New Mexico In the late 1920‘s, where he began working as a bench smith at some of the historic Trading Posts in the Southwest.

Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. He was the IACA Artist of the Year in 1996 and earned many other prestigious awards and accolades including First Place and Best of Division at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Category at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM.

7" Kirk Smith Navajo heavy stamped sterling silver stacker cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Fits up to a 7" wrist. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances.

Having no formal education Kee Joe taught himself to read and is currently the President of the Lupton Chapter of the Navajo Tribal Government. Many artists have been inspired by Kee Joe‘s talent and designs, he is the original designer of the silver and copper Navajo Wedding Basket Jewelry. Kee Joe has too many awards to list. He was mostly active in the third quarter of the 20th century.

He worked with renowned Navajo smith Harry Morgan for some years during the time when Harry ran a production studio and employed other smiths to help him meet demand for his "old pawn" style jewelry. Paul has been working independently for several years and has retained Harry‘s stylistic element of applying an "old pawn" patina to his pieces, while developing his own style based on traditional Navajo designs. His work is signed “PJ Begay.

Clean with no issues.. rville Tsinnie (1943-2017) was a Navajo artist and master silversmith who has been featured in the American Indian art world for over 25 years. He was born in Tuba City, Arizona in 1943 and lived and worked in Shiprock, New Mexico. Tsinnie learned jewelry making from his Hopi brother-in-law in the 1970s and has since won many awards, including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Indian Arts and Crafts Association.

Mark Jimenez knew at fifteen years old that he was destined to be a silversmith and jewelry designer. He remembers distinctly the first time he felt the metal in his hand and the creativity it inspired in him. "Jewelry," he explains, " is an inanimate object until it is worn and takes on the personality and life of the wearer." Each piece he designs is done with the idea that the piece is meant to bring life - the past, present and the future - to the wearer and he uses that imagery when designing his silver and gold pieces. Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1958, Mark descends from a long history of artists. Living on the vast Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, David Lister and Alice Lister, both silversmiths, have practiced their artistry together for thirty-five years, passing their craft on to four of their daughters, including their youngest, Davida Lister, who lives and works with them and Dee Nez, who lives across the street and also works alongside her parents in the same workshop. It is land where David’s grandmother once lived and which now houses several homes, workshops, sheds and horses - and from which exquisite jewelry makes its way to eager and discerning collectors.Each Lister creates their own pieces from start to finish, the only collaboration being some pieces which Alice Lister and David Lister create together, and each individual has their own distinctive style: Alice Lister puts a modern twist on traditional ideas and prefers to work with blue-green turquoise while David Lister also likes working with coral and tends to include stamp work; Dee Nez likes lots of color with the oranges of spiny oyster turning up alongside turquoise, blue lapis, green gaspeite or purple sugilite; pieces by Davida Lister are defined by the depth and size of her stones and she enjoys collecting from a wide variety of mines. Silversmiths Alice and David Lister, who helm one of today's most highly regarded families of Navajo jewelers, reflect both tradition and contemporary style in their stunning hand-cast work. Alice often features blue-green Turquoise Mountain stones in her pieces, which draw inspiration from her dreams and from the stones, as well as from modern fashion. Alice notes, "I look through modern fashion magazines and put the turquoise where the diamonds are." David is drawn to coral and stamp work. When they collaborate, David makes his own stamp dies and Alice acts as lapidary.The couple married in 1972 and has been making silver and gold jewelry together since 1975. Their small, tidy workshop on the Navajo reservation in northeastern Arizona hosts both Alice and David, as well as their daughter Dee Nez and, on weekends, her younger sister Clarissa Hale and husband Vernon – all accomplished jewelers.
