Philbert BegayPhilbert Begay is a very talented Navajo silversmith who comes from a famous silversmithing family including his four uncles and father, the late Richard Begay. Philbert learned the art of silver work from his father by polishing and finishing pieces for him as a young boy. Philbert also excels in intricate silver inlay, a technique his father is famous for. After growing up around the art of jewelry and learning many skills from his father, Philbert’s natural talent in jewelry-making has given him a name of his own. He is now an expert at overlay, applique, stamp work, cutting, polishing and inlaying stones.After attending the Colorado Institute of Art, Philbert began working with his father part-time and is now a full-time silversmith specializing in sterling silver and 14K gold contemporary Navajo jewelry.He does excellent work and is gaining a reputation as an outstanding smith. He works with many different stones but mainly turquoise, coral and lapis. His silverwork is rooted in traditional Navajo designs and accented with fine, natural stones. Traditional motifs and pictorial subjects create modern, rather than overtly contemporary, designs.He is a member of Kinlichinii Natoh Dine’, the Redhouse Tobacco Clan. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness.” Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon.Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show."His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.

Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world.In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work,” he once said with characteristic humility. Ike Wilson (1900-1942) hallmark signature of bow and arrow symbol.Diné silversmith Ike Wilson worked for many years for the Kelsey Trading Company at Zuni. He did silverwork for many of the Zuni lapidary artists including Ida Vacit Poblano. He often collaborated with his wife, Katherine Wilson.Navajo Nation artist Ike Wilson (1900-1942) would sign his creations with his bow and arrow hallmark. There has been some confusion in the past about the hallmark of Ike Wilson (1901-1942). It seems that sometimes his work was attributed to Austin Wilson. Both men were born in the same year and in a similar area of the reservation and both men worked at times for trader C. G. Wallace and the Kelsey Trading Company. Ike Wilson’s work is signed with a bow and arrow. After his death in 1942, his wife Katherine Wilson (1907-1985) continued to use his hallmark. The bow and arrow hallmark was initially attributed to Ike’s contemporary, Austin Wilson, but the corrected attribution was published in Messier, 2014.

Philbert learned the art of silver work from his father by polishing and finishing pieces for him as a young boy. Philbert also excels in intricate silver inlay, a technique his father is famous for. After growing up around the art of jewelry and learning many skills from his father, Philbert’s natural talent in jewelry-making has given him a name of his own. He is now an expert at overlay, applique, stamp work, cutting, polishing and inlaying stones.After attending the Colorado Institute of Art, Philbert began working with his father part-time and is now a full-time silversmith specializing in sterling silver and 14K gold contemporary Navajo jewelry.He does excellent work and is gaining a reputation as an outstanding smith. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show."His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.
