He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

Collected, but never worn it seems. Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Arizona, USA Native American jewelry artist. He is self taught. Over his career, he has been the recipient of countless awards, including Best of Show and 1st Place. He was raised on the Laguna Pueblo of Paraje but split time with relatives in Hopi so his work displays strong influences from both cultures. He served twenty years in the Air Force inclusive of a year in Vietnam. While in the service he obtained a degree in a special area of medical research (lab work). While still in the service, in 1972, he started working in jewelry in 1972. He has added to his skills over the years. It was once he started engraving in 1985 that his metal work became distinctly identifiable. I love that he still does small, dainty pieces that are affordable to virtually anyone. I purchased a pair of his earrings in an airport store in Denver 25 years ago for myself without knowing who he was. I still love them and wear them regularly. He has fairly recently started working with several very interesting materials. The first is Niobium. I probably shouldn‘t even mention it given I sold out of the pieces I bought before I got a chance to post them but I will get more at some point. Niobium is a metal that, when oxidized, can take on some beautiful colors. The other metal Howard is working in is Argentium silver. Standard Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is classified as Sterling as it still has a 92.5% silver content but a small portion of the copper has been replaced by Germanium. The result is startling. There are a number of advantages to the artist in how they can work with the material but to the end user (and me) the difference is the huge reduction is tarnishing. The finished work also is amazingly bright, noticeably more so than even the most polished standard Sterling. Argentium requires makers (artists) be registered with them to utilize the distinct hallmark of a flying unicorn. Howard is a registered user and is moving over to the use of Argentium almost exclusively. I will mark on each piece if it is Argentium. Artist may USE Argentium without registration but may not use the hallmark. I had some work by Myron Panteah that I‘m all but certain was Argentium but was not hallmarked as such. Howard‘s business is a family affair with both his wife, Patricia and daughter being heavily involved. His daughter is an accomplished silversmith. They are lovely people and I really enjoyed their company this year (2017) at Prescott Indian Market.

Boyd Tsosie Navajo 14k gold, diamond, opal, and coral beaded necklace. All of the metal on this necklace is tested and guaranteed solid 14k gold, weight and measurements in pictures. No issues, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Natural Opal and Mediterranean coral beads and inlay outside the pendant. My monitor is off, but these pics look really bad to me. It‘s gold, it‘s beautiful. Boyd Tsosie is a jeweler who draws inspiration from the rich heritage of his Navajo traditions. Born in 1954, he has been making jewelry since he was sixteen years of age. In 1979, Boyd Tsosie was only 23. He was already among the top echelon of Southwestern jewelers / silversmiths (both past and present). Boyd was featured in Arizona Highways along with other greats like Jesse Monongye, his brother Richard Tsosie, Gibson Nez, James Little, and Larry Golsch. These Navajo silversmiths all would go on to build fine reputations and set the standards you see today for Southwest jewelry. Kenneth Begaye, a teacher at the Navajo Community College on the Navajo Reservation, inspired Boyd at a young age. Boyd gives credit to Kenneth for teaching him his trade. Kenneth Begay has been deemed the father of modern Navajo jewelry. Before Kenneth Begay, Navajo Indian Jewelry was much like it had been for the past 100 years. Navajo jewelry had a strong Spanish influence. Which is entirely understandable since it was a Mexican silversmith (who learned from the Spanish) that taught the first Navajo to work silver. Boyd considers Kenneth Begay a major influence and carries on today the work of Kenneth Begay. Boyd Tsosie continues to move Navajo jewelry forward and he, like Kenneth Begay, generously shares his knowledge with other silversmiths. Boyd, working with his brother Richard, first gained widespread recognition for his soldered flower and leaf designs. Later, he moved his jewelry designs to a more complex, contemporary look. Over the years Boyd has developed a contemporary style of work primarily in 14K gold combined with turquoise, coral, lapis, and sugilite. Boyd feels that he is creating “tomorrows tradition in Navajo jewelry by being given the rights and prayers by his elders to create his special pieces. He is featured in Navajo Indian Jewelry and Enduring Traditions by Jerry and Lois Jacka and North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Dubin. In recent years, Boyd and his son have given back to the Navajo Nation with a nonprofit to give counsel and help to those with substance challenges.

Huge 1940‘s Leo Poblano Zuni multi-stone inlay butterfly pin sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. All stones/inlay secure in bezels with very old fracture to jet inlay in center at bottom inlaid turquoise. Circa mid 20th century, unmarked other than C.G. Wallace code on the reverse side. Attributed to Leo Poblano family. Very big pin, it would be a big belt buckle by most standards. The "Average" men‘s belt buckle is 3" wide, this is 3.5" wide. Leo Poblano (1905-1959) is considered one of the most renowned Zuni stoneworkers of the 20th century for his innovative and skillful designs. At a time when most Zuni jewelers worked with traditional themes and materials, Leo experimented and is thought to be one of the first Zuni inlay artists to use decorative elements in his carvings. After serving in the military in World War 2, Leo returned to Zuni Pueblo where he continued to make stone mosaic jewelry as well as work for the BIA as a wildlands firefighter. Because of his friendship with Zuni trader C.G. Wallace, Leo was able to work with the finest turquoise and other high quality stones for his pieces. Wallace would also assign Leos stone pieces to Navajo silversmiths for mounting on silver boxes, finger rings, pendants, and other adornments. Leos first wife, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught Leo many lapidary relief techniques which helped enhance his stone inlay pieces. Leos second wife, Ida Vacit, who was also an inlay artist, finished many of the pieces that Leo left behind after his abrupt death due to a tragic firefighting accident in 1959. Leos pieces, known for their attention to detail, impeccable technique, and innovative style are part of many notable collections including the Heard Museum and the Wheelwright Museum. He is succeeded by his daughter, Veronica Poblano, who is also an award winning Zuni artist.

No issues, some expected wear, marked as shown. I believe this was collected and never worn.Robert Lomadapki was born in 1942 at Hotevilla on Hopis Third Mesa. In the 1970s he was part of a program at the Museum of Northern Arizona where he was able to collaborate and study along with Duayne Maktima and Victor Beck under the mentorship of Jake Brookings. He is known for making Hopi overlay jewelry since the 1970s.In 2008, Robert Lomadapki (1942-2015) was named an “Arizona Living Treasure for his dedicated work in education in the Native American community.  Not only was he a talented artist, he was an educator and a gallery owner who spent his time encouraging and promoting the careers of young artists.  He spent the last years of his life in the Applied Indigenous Studies department at Northern Arizona University as a traditional knowledge scholar.  He was also the owner and operator of Isvaki Gallery in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona.

Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Early work by a historically important master Navajo silversmith. Multiple stones with very old fractures, all secure in their bezels. Weight and measurements in pictures. Fred Thompson worked as a smith for Tobe Turpen at the age of 15 and built his career on the skills he learned in Turpen‘s shop. He made his own stamps, never sold to dealers, and only sold wholesale to Tobe Turpen. After serving in WWII, he continued to make pieces into the 1990‘s. He was a teacher as well as a silversmith. World renowned, he focused on traditional Navajo styles, producing his work with utmost skill using the highest quality stones available. Thompson‘s pieces are now rare and hard to find.

Boyd Tsosie, born in 1954, is a distinguished Navajo jeweler whose innovative designs have significantly influenced contemporary Native American jewelry. He began his journey in jewelry-making at the age of sixteen, deeply inspired by his Navajo heritage. Under the mentorship of Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College, Tsosie refined his silversmithing skills, laying the foundation for his distinctive artistic style. Vintage, possibly unworn. Jeanette Dale is a contemporary Navajo silversmith who learned from her mother, but has developed a traditional style all her own. Jeanette‘s pieces are recognizable for her distinctive combination of silverwork and beautiful natural stones. Jeanette prefers the traditional Navajo style with heavy, deep stamping and high polishes. She still follows her first employer‘s advice: to leave a mark to show the jewelry was handmade. In 1973 Jeanette was working at the Fairchild Electronics Plant in Shiprock cutting out computer chips with a diamond saw. She was the fastest cutter at the plant with the best quality work. The plant shut down that year and she lost her job. She then made the decision to become a silversmith. "It just came naturally to me," she says. "Soldering was just like I was born to it. I showed my first ring to a dealer and he hired me to make jewelry for him." After nearly 40 years of jewelry making, Jeanette doesn‘t have to convince anyone to buy her jewelry. She has won top awards at the Gallup Intertribal ceremonial and her work is sought after by the top collectors in the world.

Solid sterling silver, circa last quarter of the 20th century. This artist did very little work in silver as his work was so desirable/expensive. I believe he is one of the few 20th century Native American artists to have done more work in gold than in silver. Even in the 70‘s he was working in gold, but most of the silver jewelry he made was in the 70‘s. So while this may not be more valuable than a similar gold bracelet, it is rarer. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. NO issues. Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. He was the IACA Artist of the Year in 1996 and earned many other prestigious awards and accolades including First Place and Best of Division at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Category at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM.

His work continues to be some of the finest produced in the 20th century. (Gibson Nez passed away in 2007)
