They were bussed together to school in Holbrook, Arizona, during their grade school and high school years. Many years later they married in the early 1970’s. They have seven children and ten grandchildren. Their daughters, Dee Nez and Clarissa Hale, continue on with the family tradition of silversmithing and jewelry-making. The Listers also raise cattle and horses on their ranch in the northeastern Arizona town of Dilkon. Alice and David are two very talented artists who bring many years of experience and exploration to their artwork.Alice Lister recalls watching her brother-in-law, Charles Singer, make jewelry when she was a young girl. She also remembers her mother’s jewelry collection, and she likes to think back to that collection when she designs her contemporary pieces. Alice’s fascination with her brother-in-law’s work and her mother’s collection of “big” jewelry gives Alice inspiration to create the designs you see in her jewelry today. Diné silversmith Ike Wilson worked for many years for the Kelsey Trading Company at Zuni. He did silverwork for many of the Zuni lapidary artists including Ida Vacit Poblano. He often collaborated with his wife, Katherine Wilson. Navajo Nation artist Ike Wilson (1900-1942) would sign his creations with his bow and arrow hallmark. There has been some confusion in the past about the hallmark of Ike Wilson (1901-1942). It seems that sometimes his work was attributed to Austin Wilson. Both men were born in the same year and in a similar area of the reservation and both men worked at times for trader C. G. Wallace and the Kelsey Trading Company. Ike Wilson’s work is signed with a bow and arrow. After his death in 1942, his wife Katherine Wilson (1907-1985) continued to use his hallmark. The bow and arrow hallmark was initially attributed to Ike’s contemporary, Austin Wilson, but the corrected attribution was published in Messier, 2014. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Duane’s trailer studio sits on the high bluffs of Mishongnovi, with a 100-mile view of the eternal desert valley below, giving him a view all the way to the peaks of the San Francisco Mountains.Duane is a self-taught silversmith, working in traditional Hopi silver overlay. Duane’s work incorporates hundreds of designs, including very traditional Hopi designs such as prayer feathers, clan symbols, corn maidens, water waves, and rain clouds. Duane also dabbles in special order contemporary designs such as unicorns, dolphins, and mermaids. Some of Duane’s work also incorporates semi-precious stones including coral, azurite, and natural Australian opal.Over the last several years, Duane has worked at creating several designs based on Hopi spirituality, designs which are uniquely his own. These designs include his “three generations” and his petroglyph designs which are inspired by Dawa-Ki on ancestral Hopi Lands.Duane draws his inspiration from the beauty of Hopi Lands and from Hopi spiritual beliefs. Like all Pueblo peoples, his prayers always include prayers for the world and for other peoples before his prayers for the Hopi People and himself. His sincere hope is that his jewelry brings blessings and serenity to all who wear it.Duane is the recipient of numerous awards including Judge’s Choice at the University of San Diego Show in 2003; Best of Division at the American Indian Art Festival and Market (Dallas, Texas) in 2003; and Best in Division at the Southwest Native American Promotions Show (Fountain Hills, Arizona) in 2002. His grandmother’s Uncle was Beshligai (the name means “white metal”), one of the original Native American silversmiths from the 1860s. Karl was mostly a self-taught artist and found inspiration in the old concha designs (translates from the word “snail”). His first jewelry-making started in the 1970s in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he created squash blossom necklaces.Karl, shown with his wife Karen, showcases both traditional and non-traditional materials, unique designs, and innovative techniques. Karl, inspired by the late 1800s techniques, continues to make his silver star button designs using old files. He implements gold into some of his designs as well, giving them a more modern edge.Karl and Karen live on a ranch with horses, sheep, and cattle. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing on the river. He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts."“UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb."Don Smouse was the chief Judge for silversmithing for the Navajo Nation for a time and dealt with the highest quality turquoise from around the world. The Trading Post was Borrego Pass Trading Post along the continental divide just south and west of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Smouse's were old time traders and at one point were the oldest living traders in the USA and were on the national news during the 90's for still trading the old way. Don helped train the top artists in the trade and sold there jewelry from the trading Post. They had buyers come from the Middle East, Europe and Asia for the top quality product being produced.
