Davis is known among collectors for his work as a jewelry<br>designer and silversmith based in Mexico City, Mexico. He began designing and<br>crafting jewelry and decorative objects in the 1920s. The wares he produced<br>often reflected his affinity for pre-Columbian artifacts. He occasionally<br>collaborated with Valentín Vidaurreta, another respected Mexican silver<br>craftsman with roots in Mexico City. Davis is credited as an avid promoter of<br>other silver artists, including William Spratling, who worked in Mexico from the<br>1920s through the 1950s. Frederick Davis Jewelry - HistoryDavis moved from the<br>United States to Mexico in 1910. Working as an assistant manager for the Sonora<br>News Company, he toured the country on buying trips to stock railway station<br>shops with native folk art for his employer. He established relationships with<br>many artisans during his travels, and his knowledge of Mexican crafts grew<br>extensively. His ardent work resulted in a promotion to manager of Sonora’s arts<br>and crafts showroom in Mexico City. René d’Harnoncourt, who later served as the<br>director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, was employed by Davis in 1927<br>as an assistant. Their work together led to the company’s distribution and<br>exhibition of works by Mexican painters who are now well known, such as Diego<br>Rivera, among many others. During this era, Davis and d’Harnoncourt left an<br>indelible footprint on the trade of Mexican handcrafts, including silver<br>jewelry, from that point on. Davis took a position managing antiques and fine<br>crafts for Sanborn’s department store in 1933 after d’Harnoncourt moved to the<br>United States. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Fits up to a 6 3/8" wrist, tapers from 20mm to 30mm wide. One of a kind bracelet, extremely rare example in gold. Preston Monongye did not work in a lot of gold, very few pieces have come to market ever, when they do they are crazy expensive. I personally had this machine tested on a $30,000+ XRF machine and it ranges from 40-43% gold (Averaging about 10k) which actually makes perfect sense. Since P Monongye didn't work with a lot of gold, the times he did were likely somewhat experimental. In this case it is somewhat obvious that he melted up some scrap gold, likely some that was brought to him by a customer or friend to make this which was likely a custom piece. The lowest gold content shot we took showed it at 48.13% copper, 40.08% gold, 8.18% silver, 3.49% zinc, and .12% Nickel.Preston Monongye (1927-1987) was an influential proponent of what he called “the new Indian art.” He wrote, “We may use old techniques, along with old designs taken from potsherds or pictographs, but then we redesign them or add innovations of our own.”Preston had an unconventional and late blossoming path to jewelry making. He served in two wars, worked in law enforcement, and was an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was later in life that he decided to dedicate himself full time to jewelry making, which was received numerous awards. He had always experimented with jewelry and craftsmanship, but did not receive acclaim until fully committing to his art. Preston primarily did the metalwork and design for his pieces, letting his friend and acclaimed lapidary artist Lee Yazzie do the inlay, and later allowing his son Jesse Monongye to do his lapidary work. His pieces are exhibited nationwide.Born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican and Mission Indian parents, Monongye was adopted by a Hopi family at age seven. He was raised Hopi, speaking the Hopi language and participating in the Katsina Society. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. “He taught me how to live the ‘Hopi way,'” Monongye recalled. Throughout his career, Hopi colors and images were prominent in Monongye’s work.But Monongye was adamant that Native jewelry not be bound by the past, explaining, “An old piece of philosophy given to me by my father and other men of the Hopi Mesas is, ‘If you can progress without hurting your tradition or your , you should do so.”Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi and social life. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.

Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isn’t masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marc’s jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. Vintage Santo Domingo turquoise and shell Jaclas. Great with natural stones/shell from the third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or wear. 23 grams. Approx 5.5" long as shown in the pics. A traditional Pueblo jewelry adornment, a jacla is two loops of heishi that were originally earrings and sometimes fastened to the bottom of a stone necklace as a pendant-like attachment. Jacla is Navajo for “ear string”. The Navajo spelling is the most commonly used version of the word. Jocla is also common but jackla is a phonetic mis-spelling. Although jaclas are attributed to the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians, they were traded with other tribes so have become associated with the Navajo as well. The shepherdess moves along her sheep and goat in this hallmarked cuff by the master of pictorial silverwork.Clarence LeeNavajo SilversmithBorn in 1952 in Ft. Defiance, AZ, Clarence Lee was the second oldest of six children. His parents, Tom and Emma Rose Lee raised their children in Twin Lakes, NM. Currently, all his siblings work with silver to one degree or another with the exception of a sister who works in the health care system.Clarence learned his craft from his late father Tom Lee who built and owned a Trading Post in Twin Lakes and learned how to make silver jewelry to supplement his income when business at the Trading Post was slow. Tom Lee fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, was a POW for four years and a survivor of the infamous “Death March of Bataan.” He later became New Mexico’s first Native American State Senator. Clarence’s mother, Emma was recognized in her own right as the maker of the first Navajo Nation Flag.Clarence discovered his love of art work in elementary school when a teacher saw promise and encouraged him to pursue his talent. Later on at Tohatchi High School in New Mexico he met his first real art teacher Mrs. Hale. Clarence favored his art classes over academic classes because he suffered from dyslexia. In school he made metal sculptures and worked in oil and watercolors. (Clarence still paints occasionally.)Mrs. Hale also saw potential yet admonished him, “Don’t start giving stuff away.” Her comments did not discourage him and while he was still in high school continued selling his jewelry to teachers. In addition to his art, Clarence was interested in rodeo and participated in calf and team roping events. Throughout his high school years, Clarence continues to help his father sell traditional jewelry. When financial pressures grew Clarence left school just short of his high school graduation to support his family.His first pieces of silver work were traditional hammering and stamp work set with stones. Clarence developed his own unique style almost by accident when he shaped a piece of silver resembling a dog. “I did that for eight months and sort of fell over backwards into storyteller style. I made my first bracelet and pin. I didn’t set any stones in my work until later.”His ideas come from his childhood memories of summers spent with his great grandmother at her summer home in the mountains. He remembers herding sheep and cattle near his home with friends and relatives. Images of windmills, water barrels, old trucks, wood stoves, dogs and rabbits are reflected in his artwork today. Along the way he has added whimsical animals, cowboys, dancers, children and many other images to his collection.Clarence prefers to sell his jewelry at Indian shows and present his work in competitions and exhibitions. HIs first show was at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In early years he struggled to make a name in the art world and support his family. Fortunately, the first few shows provided the emerging silversmith encouragement. “I got a good response and it just opened up from there.”His first competitive show was at the Navajo Nation Fair where his work garnered a first place ribbon in 1977. “ I started signing using an engraver at the beginning, using my family’s registered brand stamp. Using the brand was my dad’s idea, but by 1988 I added my own signature.”In 1976, Clarence married and later that year his son Russell was born. By 1980 Clarence was a divorced single parent raising his four year old son and began taking his son along to all his shows.“When Russell was about ten or so he wanted a toy he saw at the mall. I told him you have to earn it by selling something first.” From there Russell was encouraged to try his hand as a silversmith. Russell followed his father’s footsteps and eventually entered various junior competitions winning numerous awards for his work. Russell hoped to go to college after he graduated from high school but during his senior year Russell’s responsibilities in the family jewelry business began to rapidly grow. Russell postponed his college plans to tend the family business, a business that has not slowed down since. Now as an adult, Russell helps full time with the jewelry business work. An apprentice and talented artist in his own right, Russell fashions most of the tiny figures his father incorporates into his storyteller images.Three museums currently display pieces made by Clarence and Russell. You can see a bracelet on display at the San Diego Museum of Man in San Diego, California. In June 2006, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana purchased the 3-D card holder, “Mr. Yazzie goes to town” that will remain in their permanent collection.
